In my career, I learned early on that rapid learning and execution was the key to success.  I discovered it first as an Air Force pilot, then as a brand strategist and global marketing executive helping organizations navigate disruption and win.

For decades, marketing execution meant following a plan. Strategy was set at the top; execution focused on alignment and control. I led within that model at scale—working with brands like Pizza Hut, Calvin Klein, National Car Rental, and American Express—where precision and consistency were non-negotiable.

That world is over.

AI has collapsed the cost of learning. Today, advantage does not come from having the best plan—it comes from learning faster than the competition and turning insight into action before others catch up. Execution is no longer about compliance; it is how strategy is discovered.

This shift favors challengers. This has been the focus of my work at Stephan Partners, Synthetic Echo and 24/7 Real Media.

I work with CEOs, founders, and CMOs who understand that speed is now the primary competitive weapon. The metaphor I use is jazz versus orchestra. Traditional organizations play from sheet music—impressive, but slow to adapt. High-velocity teams improvise around a shared objective, understand what is working, and adjust in real time. Just like Jazz musicians, fighter pilots and great companies.

My role is to help leaders build brands and operating models that move faster than their markets—and win by learning, not waiting.

While he is known for The Innovator's Dilemma, Christensen also wrote, "“You can’t predict your way to the future. You have to learn your way there.”  Often overlooked is the subtitle of the book, When New Technologies Cause Great Firms to Fail.  We are in such a time period now; AI is certainly a new technology.

My belief is that as AI collapses the cost of experimentation, coordination, and learning, competitive advantage shifts away from superior planning and toward superior execution—defined as the ability to act, test, adapt, and redeploy faster than rivals.

This doesn't mean how many people in a firm use AI.  It does mean how have the operating procedures have changed to permit the results of constant testing to be reflected in consumer facing actions faster than rivals.
