When an investor says “I don’t see the path to $100M” they’re not asking for a bigger TAM slide.

They’re telling you they can’t see how your wedge earns the right to expand.

Your market size is not the problem but your expansion logic is.

This is happening in that moment:

The investor looked at your product and saw a solid solution to a real problem with good metrics and real customers paying real money. There are perhaps even some logos that should make them lean in.

Then they ran the mental math.

And they couldn’t connect how you go from “great tool for X” to “platform that owns the category.”

So they asked for what feels objective - a bigger market, more research, fancier charts.

But that’s not the fix.

The fix is showing why solving problem A gives you permission to solve problem B. Then C. Then D. It’s not about how big the market is but rather about why customers will let you grow with them.

I’ve helped founders raise over $75M and this is one of the patterns I see constantly. Founders with real traction getting passed on because their growth story has a gap in the middle.

The beginning works and the end state sounds exciting. But the bridge between them is invisible.

And investors won’t build that bridge for you. That’s your job.

Had a conversation with a founder recently that stuck with me. Pre-revenue with 200 users. Almost no conversions. Raising a second round and getting passes from multiple investors.

When I asked what was going wrong, he said investors “lacked alignment with his vision.” They didn’t understand long-term thinking. They were too focused on money instead of human value.

When I pointed out that 200 users not converting might be the actual problem, he told me I was “quantifying reality towards coins” and that I “fall short” because I don’t see the true value of humans.

Look, I’ve got nothing against vision. I’ve got nothing against building something meaningful. But I’ve seen this pattern enough times to know what it actually is.

It’s a defense mechanism.

“Investors don’t get my vision” is easier to say than “I haven’t proven people will pay for this.”

“I’m an empathetic builder, not a salesperson” is easier than “I don’t know how to monetize yet and that scares me.”

“Values aren’t aligned” is easier than “they saw something I don’t want to look at.”

The founders who make it aren’t the ones who choose between values and numbers. They hold both. They build something meaningful AND figure out how to make it work as a business. Those aren’t opposing forces.

If every investor conversation ends with you deciding they “don’t get it” - at some point, the common denominator isn’t them.

Sometimes the most human-centered thing you can do is look at the numbers and ask what they’re trying to tell you.
