Vice President Of Product Development

SpatialKey

Led a team of engineers responsible for building a game-changing product that has carved out a niche making geospatial data visualization and analytics approachable for business users. SpatialKey started as a proof of concept prototype in 2007 and grew into a full-fledged profitable business in just 3 years. Our initial foray into building the product was to build a SaaS mapping and visualization tool that was horizontally focused. After working with law enforcement, real estate, pharmaceuticals, and marketing companies, we refocused all of our energy in the insurance vertical. SpatialKey grew from a simple mapping tool into a full analytic platform with multiple apps bringing together customer data with third party data. Some examples of those apps are the Underwriting, Hazard Analyst, Hurricane Forecast, Earthquake Impact, and Wildfire apps. They allow insurers to understand risk at the point of underwriting using different hazard models as well as the  impact of an event on their portfolio. We have also built several custom apps for customers, integrating their backend processes into our platform and exposing their analytics in an easy to use interface integrated into the SpatialKey experience. 

As VP of Engineering in a startup environment I handled a wide range of responsibilities:

-Built out the software as a service infrastructure for SpatialKey from the ground up on Amazon EC2. Created using open source software: Linux, Apache, Tomcat, Postgres, and Postgis. 
-Managed a distributed design and engineering team located throughout the world.
-Managed the development process for custom applications built on the SpatialKey platform. 

Responsibilities included onsite requirements gathering, overseeing the design, development, deployment and support. In some cases handled some of the engineering tasks and hands on deployment.

Adobe Systems

-Managed a geographically distributed team responsible for Enterprise support through  our Technical Account Manager support offering, the highest level of support that Adobe offers.
--Managed 16 employees from two separate teams through an extended transition period. Recruited and hired a replacement manager for my Mobile and Devices team while transitioning into the Technical Account Manager role.
-Managed Enterprise support for Flex, ColdFusion, Connect and Lifecycle

Field Support Manager

• Managed a world wide distributed team located in San Francisco, Boston, London, Ottawa and Japan.
• Responsible for the support of OEM’s and carriers porting Flash Lite and SDK source code to mobile devices such as mobile phones and consumer electronics. 
• Hired seven new employees and established a training plan to quickly integrate them into the team.
• Responsible for the OEM mobile certification program to certify devices that integrated Flash Lite and Flash SDK.   
• Managed the escalation of customer issues from the world wide offices of Japan, Korea and Europe.
• Worked close with the Hamburg Germany based Device Intelligence team on the creation of  Device Central, a key component of CS3 for the creation of mobile content.  
• Responsible for the hiring and training of the FlashCast support team in preparation for several high profile launches

Manager Mobile & Devices World Wide Support

Worked directly with the Flex product team during the development of Flex from Alpha to release in March of 2004. I was responsible for first learning the product, then working with the existing support staff to identify and train a new support team. 

Worked with Macromedia Professional Service team to assist strategic customers to build proof of concepts to prove Flex as a new technology.

Flex Support & Escalation Engineer

Responsible for supporting Enterprise Level mission critical websites running on Macromedia ColdFusion 5.0 CFMX, and CFMX for J2EE on JRun, Websphere and Weblogic. Work directly with Fortune 500 customers to review infrastructure, code, database design and Application server settings then make recommendations to improve site performance and scalability along with best coding practices. Perform problem resolution onsite engagements with customers along with documenting and examining customer environments.

Recently promoted to an Escalation Engineer position responsible for working directly with engineering to resolve highly technical product support issues.  Personally selected from the product support team to spearhead a special project to take the new macromedia.com live.  Responsible for architecting the clustered configuration, load testing and tuning the applications and application servers.

Principal Support Engineer (Allaire & Macromedia)

US Army

Responsible for the development and training given to U.S. Army personnel, Department of Defense civilians and foreign national students for courses on web design, active server pages, database design, Windows NT, and network security for over 500 students a year. Served as consultant for the U.S. Army on database and web application issues for SQL Server, IIS 4.0, Active Server Pages, and Cold Fusion.

Developed a dynamic web based, database driven course critique system for US Army Signal Center to provide student feedback for over 1000 classes and 30,000 students per year. The Automated End of Course Critique system put the needed information into the hands of the decision makers 300% quicker than the manual system and reduced the workload by 200% saving the Army time and over $100,000 during the life of the system. System developed with Windows NT 4.0 Server, IIS 4.0, SQL Server 7.0, and Active Server Pages.

Instructor/Writer US Army Computer Science School

Improved the Division infrastructure from 9600bps modems to a fully functional WAN that included 2,000 computers, 75 Cisco routers, 10 Windows servers, and 4 MS Exchange Servers spanning 20 locations over a 200 mile radius.

Designed and implemented a dynamic web based, database driven, tactical command and control system providing up to the second updates of equipment, personnel, and significant activities to commanders for a unit of over 18,000 personnel. Improved the go to war capabilities by putting real time battlefield information into the hands of the commanders up to 300% faster. It has fundamentally changed how the 2nd Infantry Division uses information and automation systems. It has increased the commanders ability to make decisions by providing more accurate, timely information that could save lives during a wartime situation.  Proven successful in over 7 years of use. This system or adaptations thereof is the standard for command and control systems throughout the Army.

I have over twenty-five years of Enterprise software development, customer support, consulting and management for Adobe Systems, Macromedia, United States Army and SpatialKey. I have experience in managing up to 350 personnel as well as managing remote global distributed teams. I have planned, developed, implemented and maintained systems of varying complexities at responsibility levels ranging from local teams to divisions with over 18,000 personnel. Extensive experience with web applications, databases, building out IT infrastructure, cloud-based systems, as well as many other web-based technologies. I also have extensive experience with building and supporting scalable information systems.
