I just received an email from a subscription service telling me their rates are increasing. And they went on to say that they are “Happy to let me know my price is grandfathered in so I won’t see the increase.”

I was surprised to see the term “grandfathered in” still being used. It carries a harmful origin story that I learned about several years ago (having a linguist in the family helps). Where it comes from:

After the Civil War, several Southern states wanted to stop newly enfranchised Black Americans from voting without explicitly violating the 15th Amendment. So they created barriers like literacy tests and poll taxes knowing full well that many Black citizens, recently freed and systematically denied education and economic power, would fail them.

To protect poor white voters from those same barriers, states passed grandfather clauses: if your grandfather had been allowed to vote before the Civil War, you were exempt.

If you were Black, your grandfather almost certainly had not been allowed to vote. That was the point.

So the phrase “grandfathered in” is tied to:
— A discriminatory workaround to block Black voters.
— A loophole designed to maintain white political power.
— Policies that stood until the Supreme Court struck them down in 1915.

Language matters and it’s important to understand the origin of phrases. I sent this to the subscription service ;).
