Conflict Between Work and Childcare: A Personal Struggle That Changed How I Work

Around 2017, my son was just one year old.
I had a 5 p.m. meeting on my calendar with the CEO of the ad agency where I worked. Daycare closed at 6. I knew the math didn’t add up.

Halfway through that meeting, I walked out.
I felt terrible — torn between doing what I knew was right as a parent and what I thought I had to do to keep my job.

That moment stuck with me for years.

Fast forward to today — I run my own business. A client called recently about a media shoot, and I told him, “I stop at 2 p.m. so I can pick up my boys.”
And I said it without hesitation.

Because what’s the point of building your own business if you’re still chained to someone else’s clock?

At around 3:05 every day, my sons know Dad will be there.
The work still gets done. The quality’s still high.
But my priorities are exactly where they should be.

For years I attended conferences like this one, the Digital Marketing for Financial Services Summit in New York, as part of a technical support or vendor team.

But this time was different.
This time I attended as a sponsor, representing Solutions CTC as Marketing Director.

Earlier this year, I was given a mandate to elevate our visibility and strengthen our partnership with Magnolia CMS.

Since then, I have worked closely with their global marketing team to develop a shared strategy, align our messaging, design our booth experience, and lead our social and media presence for the event.

By the time we arrived in New York, our presence was more than just a logo on a wall. It told a story about partnership, expertise, and how we help financial services firms modernize their digital experience with Magnolia DXP.

Of course, none of this happened alone.
It took the marketing team at Magnolia CMS, the Solutions CTC team, and the creative geniuses at Gairy Consulting, who delivered in-house agency-level strategy and design, all working together to bring it to life.

Hundreds of senior marketing and technology leaders stopped by, from traditional finance to fintech. I had the opportunity to share how Magnolia provides the platform and how Solutions CTC supports enterprise clients as a strategic implementation partner.

It was one of those moments when I realized what strategic marketing leadership looks like. It is not just about execution. It is about shaping the narrative.

Two weeks ago, a new fractional CMO client nearly walked away.

The kickoff call was great. My team jumped in immediately. I thought we were aligned.
Then the first check-in happened… and it was a disaster.

They came with a long list of things that weren’t meeting expectations.
It was a gut punch.
All my clever systems and Notion boards felt useless in that moment.

But here’s the thing about doing this work: sometimes the “system” isn’t the issue.
Sometimes it’s alignment.
Sometimes it’s communication.
Sometimes it’s preference.

I told my team we’d go down swinging if we had to.
Instead, we got to work.

We accelerated content delivery.
We built social posts.
We showed up in the comments.
We doubled down on Stories.
We spun up the email marketing engine.
We tightened the website with speed updates and messaging that matched social and email.

And most importantly — we ditched Notion externally because it wasn’t their preferred way to communicate. We moved everything to email, and things immediately felt clearer.

Fast-forward to today:
We turned it around.
We’re now introducing monetization options the board has wanted for years.
The energy is different. The partnership is real.

It’s been hard.
But digital transformation is never just tools.
It is people and process transformation.
And sometimes the first step is listening hard and rebuilding trust.

So thankful for the opportunity to lead an AI presentation for the team at Tara Dowdell Group.

This week, I swam halfway down the pool.

Not a backyard pool — an Olympic-sized one.

Back in May, I decided to learn how to swim. I wanted to face a lifelong fear of water and, honestly, I wanted to keep up with my two boys, who’ve taken to swimming like naturals.

It’s been slow. Awkward. Humbling.
But every few weeks, there’s been a small win, a little more distance, a little more control, a little less panic.

And somewhere between the shallow end and halfway down the lane, it hit me:

Learning to swim in my mid-40s isn’t that different from building a business.

You start out struggling with things that seem simple to others.
You feel out of breath. You overthink your form.
And you wonder, "why am I even doing this?"

But every stroke — every attempt — builds muscle memory.
Every small win prepares you for the next one.

So yeah, maybe I only made it halfway down the pool.
