I have only heard of a small handful of sincere overnight success stories.

From what I've witnessed, the vast majority of progress is the result of a a year of focused work in quiet.

It will be hard to know when you've gone from beginner to master, but the path there is paved with REPS.

Here’s what you actually need to motivate yourself to start a business in 2024:

1. Start Before You’re Ready

The biggest reason for my entrepreneurial “success”: saying f*ck it and starting anyways.

Building a coding school at 22 with no experience. Buying a cannabis website. Writing online.

Each of these decisions led to millions in revenue.

2. Find Work That Feels Like Play

It’s hard to stay motivated doing boring work.

Make it easier for yourself - find work that feels like play.

Find your Ikigai - what you love doing, what the world needs, what you can be paid for, and what you’re good at.

3. Measure Success by Your Standards

Defining success by someone else's standards is a fool's game. Their goals likely don't align with yours.

Instead, create your own definition based on your personal values.

Read 10 pages a day. Code for 1 hour a day. Write 500 words a day. 

Consistency is key.

Pro tip: join a mastermind to find these people.

It’s cliché at this point, but your network really is your net worth.

6. Adopt a Growth Mindset

The most successful people I know are always striving to get better.

They don’t dwell on setbacks. They see challenges as opportunities. They’re hungry, humble, and smart.

Never stop learning. The day you stop growing is the day you start dying.

7. Unf*ck Your Dopamine Receptors

Social media, porn, junk food, and Netflix are hijacking our brains to need constant dopamine hits. 

Make your baseline happier by avoiding quick dopamine fixes. Read books. Exercise. 

Save that dopamine for your goals.

8. Don’t Rely on Hustle

Hustling 24/7 is an overrated myth the gurus sold you on. Working smart is the real cheat code.

Automate. Eliminate. And delegate your way to success. Build bulletproof systems and hire A-players to execute.

You win by doing less, not more.

9. Think About Your Legacy

• What do you want to be remembered for when you die?
• How will you positively impact the world?

Design your ideal legacy, then work backward to figure out what to do today.

Live by design, not by default.

10. Get Into Nature

Studies show that being in nature boosts creativity, reduces stress, and makes you happier. 

Take calls on walks. Have meetings outside.

The 4 Stages of HABIT Loops (from James Clear)

Leveraging your Addictive Tendencies:

Everyday, I see some form of "we are what we repeatedly do" platitude.

Although I appreciate the truth there, I also know it takes more than 1 sentence to breakdown why we do what we do.

This framework makes it simple:

Stage 1: Cue –

- Identify triggers that prompt desired behavior.

- Design your environment to make positive cues more prominent.

- Set yourself up for success by creating an environment that nudges you towards your goals.

Stage 2: Craving –

- Develop a strong desire for the rewards that come from the habit.

- Visualize the benefits and align your mindset with long-term value.

- True craving fuels unstoppable motivation.

Stage 3: Response –

- Craft a clear, actionable plan to execute your habit.

- Break it down into manageable steps and create a system that supports consistent progress.

- Efficient systems eliminate the need for relying solely on willpower.

Stage 4: Reward –

- Celebrate victories and reinforce positive outcomes.

- Let the joy of accomplishment fuel your desire to repeat the behavior.

- Embrace gratitude for the journey, not just the destination.

Sustained growth is a balancing act…

All action and no reflection leads to:
- burnout
- dead ends
- lack of clarity

And…

All reflection and no action leads to nowhere.

I wouldn’t say the best balance is 50/50 here.

More like 80/20.

Action needs to be prioritized to keep momentum and to keep feedback loops functioning.

But without sincere reflection, you won’t know when to double-down or when to pivot.

Like many things, tempering one extreme with another is needed for consistent improvement across time.

Some people lean too far toward action, without reflecting.

And some lean too far toward reflection.

If you can find that just-right balance between the two, you’ll know.

It will be evident because you’ll feel PURPOSE & CLARITY.

That combo is undefeated over the long haul.

Proper detachment in work and life makes things so much clearer.

See issues from a bird'seye view.

But live in first person.

It's that balance between perspective and presence that makes people successful in doing the right things, on repeat.

Cold plunges changed my life.

Namely: cold plunges stopped my panic attacks.

When I was going through graduate school, out of the blue I began having periodic panic attacks, vertigo, un-prompted anxiety, and paresthesias (phantom tingling) across my face.

It was a scary time for me.

I went to several doctors and there was nothing obvious that would be causing it.

So I did what every person does...

I went DEEP down the WebMD rabbit hole, and was convinced that death was near (it prompted me to get life insurance, which I probably needed anyways, but the thought of dying was a daily occurrence in my mind).

This was one of the lowest points in my life.

It was then that I came across the Vice documentary about Wim Hof -- and it clicked instantly for me.

I started with cold showers, then got a 100gal stock tank from the farm store, and started doing daily plunges.

This was the first real "domino" effect I saw in my health and mentality life.

I found myself needing less and less coffee, I felt more confident, and was able to focus.

Oh, also, MASSIVE reduction in panic attacks.

It provided the momentum I needed to begin putting myself in order.

That chapter was so important for me though -- I used to quietly judge people who had mental health issues, mostly because I thought I understood where they come from.

Now I know it's not that simple.

I remember one day chatting with my dad about the cold plunges -- he asked:

"what are you thinking about when you cold plunge?"

He saw me go out in the early mornings with my yerba mate and sit in the tank for 10, 15min daily.

"Nothing." was my answer.

And that was the point.

Cold plunges allowed me to get out of my thoughts and into my body.

For me, they kicked off a whole lifestyle shift -- one that was more toward whole-being health, fitness, nutrition, financial and relational wellness. 

Like I said, life-changing.

That one habit started me on a whole new life-path.

If you have been debating whether you should give it a go, I can't recommend it enough.

I started small -- start your shower cold, go for 1min, then turn the water warm.

If you can't do 1min, try 10seconds.

Even better, take some deep breaths beforehand.

That after-cold-shower feeling is powerful to say the least.

If you're in a rough spot internally, and are looking for a daily hard-reset, I can't say whether it will work for you but I can say this: It worked for me.

Balance your push and pull is how you stay in the game.

Hormozi says it all the time: Just don't stop.

Finding that forward-leaning produce/recover balance has changed everything for me when looking at the next decade

Anxiety is a common experience for high-performers.

But people get it backwards.

Anxiety can come from lack of insight, but in my experience it typically stems from a hyper-articulate set of goals that aren't manifest yet.

The "I'm not there yet" mind.

That kind of anxiety can only be remedied by direct, consistent action toward the goals.

High-performers are typically dreamers.

If you neglect the dream, you will eventually find yourself in a state of anxiety or paranoia.

Tl;DR -- Don't neglect the dream.

It took me too long to learn this...

Online business is as much about what you DON'T do, as what you do.

Learning what to ignore is real skill.

So many "problems" in business exist only in the mind, it's why First Principles are a must.

First principles give you a filter that you run your obstacles/problems/challenges that help you figure out the first true question:

"Is this an ACTUAL problem"

Once you identify whether or not an issue is worth solving, you then proceed to the next phase: Root Cause.

It's good to solve problems.
It's BETTER to solve patterns.

I've found that the majority of issues that arise in business, are MUCH easier to rectify when you learn the difference between

Important & Urgent.

Most issues aren't either.
Many are important.
Some are urgent.

When you don’t even flinch at shiny objects

When you know your path and clarity increases with each step

When locked-in isn’t just something you say/post

When you stop counting in hundreds and start counting in 10’s of thousands

When you think in decades

—> That's business flowstate.

Persistence doesn't matter when things are easy.

Reps don't count until you're tired.

I actually don't love the concept of "deprioritizing emotion" but for the sake of the point, I think it fits.

Another way to view it is that emotions or mental states have the power to disengage you from the work that needs doing, if they run the show.

And on top of that, our emotional states often mirror our choices as much as anything.

Getting to the work often creates a positive feedback loop of the emotions you wished you had when you started the work.

It's a small leap of faith, but I've found it works most times.

☑ 5% of energy IDENTIFYING problems
✅ 95% of energy taking massive ACTION toward solutions

It's way too easy to let this be more like 50/50.

Find the problems, find the leverage, then do the work:
