"You are the niche" is bad advice....

Is AI going to replace books?

This is a question I was asked recently by a successful coach & content creator.

His general thought was, if you can get an answer from AI, why spend all that time reading an entire book?

It’s a great question, and as someone who writes books for coaches & experts, I’m naturally going to be biased in my answer….

I’m likely to disagree, and paint a vision where books continue to thrive for decades to come.

And that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

Here are 2 reasons why I believe AI will NOT act as a replacement for books:

#1 - Humans learn from story

You can learn how-to steps all day long from AI, but if you don’t hear the stories behind how those frameworks came to life, they will only live skin-deep in your mind.

This is why great speakers open with stories…
Why great authors alternate between story and teaching repeatedly…

The story sinks the moral in deep and permanent.

We learn in movies, not instructional films.

So if you want to use AI to learn something effectively...

You would need to ask AI to tell you real stories that unpack how the method was discovered and refined.

And while I’m sure you could take this route with AI… 

Why not spend 10 bucks to get a much more refined version, from an actual human who has gotten the results you seek?

Most books have hundreds of hours invested into their production…

The set of stories, the evidence, and the teaching are much more refined.

And those authors will even use AI to write that great book...

Yet the best ones are will write the final book by hand, so it has that real, human touch.

End result?

A more enjoyable experience & improved outcome.

Reason #2 - There are multiple (effective) solutions to every problem

Imagine you want to lose weight, and instead of picking up a book, you go to AI to find a solution…

AI might tell you to take up jogging and to eat more vegetables.

Now we all know this would work…

But what if it doesn’t work for you?

What if you would much prefer yoga to running?

What if your digestive system doesn’t handle a lot of fiber well?

What if you have psychological issues or trauma that are the real reason you can’t lose the weight?

AI can’t suggest twenty different solutions.

Instead, it picks the most conventional, safe solution to every problem.

You have to gamble on whether this is the right solution for you.

Now, imagine you’re using AI to try and get business advice.

And it’s giving the exact same business advice to every other person who asks the question…

Now your strategy has become commoditized and won’t stand out or be nearly as effective.

Now, you might argue...

Wouldn’t it be more effective to learn the actionable, step-by-step part of the book with AI, versus reading it in an operation manual style book?

To this, I say YES.

And my husband and kids who sacrificed time with me and carried more of the load, never complaining, always encouraging.

I'm SO excited and relieved (and kind of freaked out).

My college roommate shook me awake at 2:30 in the morning:

“Ellwood, will you write my paper for me? I’ll pay you fifty bucks.”

I could see a blinking cursor on his white, bulky desktop monitor.

Smell the beer on his breath.

He’d been up into the night trying to drink his way past writer’s block.

So far, only a title and a single opening sentence had been written.

Groggy as f*ck, I climbed out of bed to abide by his request.

Hell, I needed the money.

I wrote his five-page English paper (due at 9 am) over the next few hours.

On some topic I knew nothing about.

(I’m a great bullshitter)

He got a C+.

Not my best work.

But I still got paid 🙂

Over time, I started writing papers for more of my college friends.

For ten bucks a page, they could shove their problem into my lap.

Funny enough, I continued to accept the work, even when I didn’t need the money.

I had discovered something strange about myself:

I actually enjoyed the process of organizing thousands of words on a document.

Had a sick passion for it even.

Sometimes people looked at me funny when I told them.

They still do.

Today, I have a better understanding of why I like this:

It puts me in flow.
Gets me in the moment.
Challenges me.
Helps me feel like I did something meaningful with the day.

And, science backs this up:

Getting into flow state and doing meaningful, creative work (even for just 60-90 minutes a day) is associated with higher happiness and life satisfaction.

That’s enough of a reason for me to do it…

But here’s where it gets really cool:

The work that you do, in flow state, that creates more happiness and satisfaction on it’s own…

Can actually be what you build your career on the back of.

You can be paid to create.

Figuring this out, for me, is the ultimate win.
