Yesterday I ran my first 21k. Here's what I learned about it.



Context:

I've always been into sports, but I HATED running.

By the end of last year, I decided to join a triathlon team 🤯 


If I was gonna do it right, I needed to BECOME someone else.

Change my eating habits - this is saying NO to many temptations
Train every day
And be open to learning new things about these three disciplines.


As Alex Hormozi once said, achieving extraordinary results is NOT about making extraordinary efforts.

It's about the ORDINARY efforts you make for an extraordinary period of time.


The results for me?

So far this year, I ran a triathlon, a long-distance swimming race, and now ran 21k - and did a great time!


So, the lesson for me: 

If you focus on becoming someone else and commit to long-term actions (the inputs!), great things will happen!

What are the benefits of running for long-term health?

You're Leaving Money on the Table, New Google Ads AI Feature, and More.

Changing the course of a company is okay. 
Unless you skip this key step. 🙅‍♂️ 

Context:

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Dylan Jones on The DTC Insider podcast.

And one of the many brilliant things he said...

...is that it's okay to change the course of a brand.

BUT, before you do that, you need to set the stage.

What does this mean?

He gives a great example in the video below 👇 


If Burger King decided to start selling tacos, that wouldn't be a problem.

However, if they tell a poor story, or roll it out too early...

...it could flop and become a major issue for the company. ❌ 


On the flip side: 

If they started slowly rolling out as jokes...

Little subtle hints here and there...

Made a joke commercial...

And then 2 years later it's baked into people's understanding...

Now, they can successfully release a breakfast taco 🌮

Many DTC brands are trying to grow, but can't because they're focusing on the wrong things.


Context:

This screenshot is from yesterday's meeting.

A part of my team and I were having our internal monthly session for one of our clients.

We wanted to check if they're on track for their monthly and quarterly goals and propose actionable next steps.

The takeaway of the meeting?

It wasn't "new ad campaigns to test"...

Or "new ads to create"...

In this case, it was about IMPROVING THE OFFER.

How?

This client wants to increase the AOV.

We're already running some upsells - and they're working well.

However, AOV is not growing as expected.

Yesterday, we discovered that their most expensive product's price is the same as the target AOV.

So, we thought it was a good idea to propose creating more expensive products as an "anchoring" effect (the currently most expensive product would feel "cheaper").

We've also identified their customers are patriots, so we're going to rename some of the products accordingly.

For example, instead of "100 seed variety kit" we're going to name it "American Survivor Kit".

This is marketing.

And I'm proud of my team at BSR Digital for pushing beyond the classic "performance marketing agency" tasks.


Will it work?

We'll see.

But nobody can say we aren't trying hard.

There's a clear disconnect between agencies and clients. 
But, whose fault is it?


Things have gotten harder for companies in general, not just in the marketing area.

Now, many "marketing agencies" are really "paid ads agencies", "email marketing agencies", and so on. 

And, while other types of agencies - ie. website design agencies - will give you a well-defined deliverable (ie. a website).

That's not the case for "marketing agencies".

Clients typically expect them to become their superheroes and solve all marketing problems. 

There's no final deliverable. 

It's a service that depends on so many business factors.

And there's the disconnect.

I'm sure every good agency wants to make things work for their clients, but let's be real...

Even if you do a great job at the paid ads and/or email marketing strategy, ad creatives, LPs, etc...

...there are many more levers in the business and marketing areas that need to be taken care of for things to work well, such as: 

- Improving the offer and value ladder to boost the AOV, decrease the time between purchases, and increase the LTV. 

- Better customer service.

- Taking care of the brand side.

- Improve product.

And many more...

In case you didn't read the latest issue of The DTC Insider newsletter (link in the comments), this report shows how they feel about:

Ad platforms…
Campaign types…
Budget distribution…
Generative AI…
And much more.

Since 38% of the advertiser respondents work in the e-commerce industry, I thought it was relevant to share this with you all.

It's a very interesting read, but in case you don't have time to go through its 60+ pages...

...here are my takeaways:

💠 PPC SPECIALISTS' PRIORITIES FOR 2024:

When these specialists were asked: “What’s your top priority for 2024?”

They didn't say things like: "easier-to-use ad platforms" or "more predictable results".

Instead, they were aligned with what brands care about: profitability.

This was a surprise. 

Even though there are some disconnects between brands and agencies, this is a clear alignment with brands' goals.


💠 GOALS FOR THE AD CAMPAIGNS IN 2024:

Growing at all costs is not a thing for brands anymore.

And marketers get it.

72% picked "efficient growth" as their most likely goal for 2024.

This means they’re allowed to increase spend as long as their efficiency targets (such as ROAS or CPA) are met.


💠  AD PLATFORM ADOPTION AND SPEND:

For this one, the participants were asked: "On which platforms are you (or your team) currently running PPC campaigns?"

There was no surprise here.

Google and Meta dominate the ranking.

However, when these people were asked how much they spent on each one, it got interesting.

As the monthly ad spend level grows, so does the adoption of platforms like YouTube, Bing, and TikTok, among others.


💠 CHALLENGES WITH MULTI-CHANNEL ADVERTISING:

Reconciling paid media efforts across different ad platforms remains a challenge.

With two-thirds of the respondents citing attribution as a particular hurdle.

Some takeaways from this one:
﻿👉﻿ Attribution modeling is still the #1 challenge for marketers.
﻿👉﻿ First-party data integration is a top priority for them.
﻿👉﻿ Cross-platform reporting is key to better understanding the bigger picture.

TikTok Testing Virtual Influencers for Video Ads, Global E-commerce Sales Growth Report, and More.

Don't increase your pricing without considering this.


Today I spoke with a brand new agency owner, and this topic came up.

I often hear the advice of increasing pricing.

And while there's nothing wrong with that.

It involves other things you should keep in mind.

Think about it this way: 

Do you think the people who typically buy a T-shirt for $30 would buy one elsewhere for $1?

Of course not.

Why?

It's a different target audience.

The same happens with B2B pricing.

If you charge $200/mo for paid ads management...

...do you think you would attract the same type of clients who are willing to pay $5,000?

Don't think so.


So, whenever you think about drastically increasing your pricing, ask yourself:

Can we generate enough value ($$$) for them to justify this?

If the answer is yes, test it out with new clients.

If it's no, you can either:

1. Offer them something else they need to charge a higher fee.

2. Change the type of clients you're working for.

After all, it's often much easier to work with clients who pay $5,000 than with those who pay $200.

I've seen dozens of brands make this mistake.


They set the right goals, but implement poor strategies.

Leading to undesired outcomes.

Your brand might be sitting on a gold mine.

But you won't see a dime if you can't identify the opportunities.

President Biden has signed legislation to ban TikTok.

What now?

The countdown has started. ﻿⏳﻿

In about 9 months, TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, must be sold.

Otherwise, it'll face a national ban.

You would assume that - within this time - the parties involved would be able to reach an agreement to keep the platform running.

However, the Chinese government has recently vowed to oppose the forced sell-off.

As it would rather see it banned than bow to what it sees as an overreach.

So maybe, political wrangling could see TikTok actually banned for good.

What do you think will happen?

Google has announced that it’s expanding its relationships with streaming providers, including Disney, Paramount, NBCUniversal, and Warner Bros.

Which will provide more placement options for your campaigns.

Google’s also adding “Instant Deals”. 

Which will enable marketers to establish customized deals with top publishers from within the Display & Video 360 interface.

According to the company:

"This buying method is already available today for high-impact reservation YouTube placements like YouTube Select and Masthead. And soon, agencies will be able to access those same placements with non-guaranteed deals for even greater budget flexibility. Plus, instant deals are expanding beyond YouTube to major publishers like Disney."
