How to Find Your People

Don't look for a job!

Because jobs aren't looking for you.


When you get laid off or lose your job your reaction is to immediately "Start Looking" Get your resumes out and "Start Looking"

This is something I have personally delt with in the last 6 months, you feel the urgency to get a job, to earn an income, and take care of my family. If you've been in that position I get it.

But pressing your network and dumping a ton of resumes on job sites will not get you where you want to go. In fact, it might take longer and you may end up with a job you didn't want in the first place.

Again I'm speaking from experience.


The best way to get the job you want is to: GIVE

❇ Give Free Advice


-> Help someone else find their Dream Job
-> Connect others to valuable people
-> Give away some helpful advice
-> Advocate for someone


The universe will pay you back.


You can submit dozens of resumes but the best opportunities come from relationships you build and helping people in your network.

The Hidden Job Market is a Myth

When I was looking for work end of last year I was using some of the "normal" tactics that most job seekers are going through.

- Submitting Resumes
- Filling out online applications
- Looking at job boards

This is probably the least effective way to find a job.


It's the so-called Hidden Job Market that is actually the best way to find to find a Dream Job and it's not hidden its right in front of you.


Let me share my story

Last fall I applied for a job for a Customer Success role.

Two weeks later crickets


But I knew the "Hidden Job Market" was open for business I just had to get my foot in.

That is when I went to the Silicon Slopes Tech Conference and I connected with a number of great people

-> Well 2 weeks after the conference a connection I had met passed my resume along to a friend of his who was a cofounder.

-> Then another friend of mine introduced me to the HR recruiter at that company.

-> I eventually ended up getting an interview.


This is the "Open Job Market" because when you are open to talking and making real connections. Real opportunities present themselves to find a "Dream Job."


What I learned is:


-> Networking is key
-> Showcase your value
-> Have a proactive Approach
-> There are always Unadvertised Opportunities


The "hidden" job market isn't a fairytale – it's a testament to the power of proactive networking and hard work. 

If you're currently job hunting, remember that there's more out there than meets the eye.

It's easy to get caught up in our own stuff, I know I certainly have.

People try to overcomplicate 🤔 Customer Success, myself included. 

When it comes down to it, Customer, Success is all about making your customers successful. It's that simple/straightforward.  

Think about if your customers are having success with your product or service,  then Expansion and Retention will naturally happen. 

From my experience as a CSM most if not all the time the reason a customer leaves is because they were not finding success with our product. 

To sum it up everything you do should be focused around helping your customers be successful with your product or service. 

I was reminded by a post from a friend of mine Catherine Bennett that life can be a bit of a mess.

We screw up, 
we fail, its inevitable
so we need to be comfortable with it.

Focus on what you can control
do the best you can
life will work out 😀

I've Failed!


The last few weeks I have failed to post on LinkedIn. 😥 

I do miss interacting with my LinkedIn Family because I have made so many friends here.

For the last two months I have been focused on my new role as the Sr Manager of Proactive Communications at Vivint.

There is a lot to do and it has been so much fun learning new things I can influence.

I guess my point is for those writing on LinkedIn there is value in being consistent.

There is also value in contributing now matter how often.  What you have to say can truly help someone.

No matter how often you post.

My goal of course is to it daily but if I can't the world is not going to end.

Do the best you can do and things tend to work out on there own!

Did you learn something today?

I make it a point every day to write down something I learned or observed.

I call it my W.I.L.L list (What I've Learned Lately)

Here is something I learned today.

I found that if I focus on creating a streak of one, it's much easier to achieve long-term success.

For example, I want to do at least 50 push-ups every day for the next year.

But if I say to myself in the morning I want to create a streak of one and do my 50 pushups it's not overwhelming and I can continue to say that each day and eventually I'll end up achieving my long-term goal.

So create "Streaks of one" on something you want to get better at and eventually you will.

Here’s a simple question to ask when you’re facing a difficult challenge:

If you're looking to improve your negotiation skills, here's a tip: try to get the other person to say "no." 

According to Christopher Voss, using phrases like 

"Would you be opposed to..." or "Would it be a ridiculous idea to..." can help elicit a "good" no. 

This technique has worked for me in simple negotiations like asking for a discount or closing a business deal. Give it a try and let me know if it helps you too!
