We’ve all had bad interviews.
We’ve all fumbled a question.

But what’s wild is this new era of:

→ “I want the job” (but won’t reply to emails)
→ “I’m interested in the company” (but haven’t Googled it)
→ “I’m passionate about startups” (but can’t answer why you applied to this one)
→ “I can bring value” (but can’t explain what skills or knowledge they bring to the table)

And here’s the twist, Calendly just reminded me I’ve done 1,000 interviews since I started.

I promised myself from day one I’d do it differently.

I’m not the cliché interviewer who asks:
“How do you envision yourself in 5 years?”
Come on, I don’t even know if I’ll finally manage to visit Japan next year.

This isn’t a rant against applicants.

I know job hunting is hard.

I know companies post roles they don’t plan to fill (to create buzz or keep VCs happy).

I know how many auto-rejections happen before a human even looks at your CV.

But when I do get the chance to interview someone, I try to make it human and supportive.

I want it to feel like a real conversation, not a trap.

All I ask in return: show up curious, prepared, and ready to talk about what you bring to the table.

Because startups move fast, and if you’re not ready to learn about the team you want to join, you’re probably not ready to build with them either.
