It took a visa approval to remind me I haven’t truly switched off all year!!!

After months of non-stop work (and no summer break), my brain said,
“Can you really afford to switch off right now?”

And I couldn’t afford not to.

I finally received my visa and booked a few days away at the end of October.

A proper sunny beach holiday.
No laptop.
No work books.

Just walking by the sea, snorkelling, and reading something that has nothing to do with leadership theory.

Because I’ve learned, when you never step away, your creativity quietly dies.
Your patience shrinks. And the small things start to feel heavy.

Every time I take real rest, I come back sharper, calmer, and more resilient.
The problems that once looked complicated… start to look solvable again.

The best part? As a leader,

It gives your team a chance to step up and shine.
To make decisions.
To build confidence in your absence.

And if things fall through the cracks, that’s data.

It shows you exactly where you need to build strength next.

🌴 I’m curious, what’s one thing you actually do to switch off?

I didn’t realise how much my leadership was suffering… until I started sleeping properly.

At the beginning of September, I made a commitment to myself, to move more, eat better, sleep better, and tend to my mindset.

No grand “wellness plan.” Just small, consistent shifts. And the difference has been… remarkable.

I’m calmer in meetings.
I pause before reacting.
I can see situations with more clarity instead of just rushing to fix them.

It made me realise how often we, as leaders, keep running on empty: thinking we’re holding everything together…when in truth, our teams feel exhaustion long before we do.

When we’re grounded, our decision-making sharpens.

Our empathy deepens.

And our teams feel it, in how we listen, respond, and lead.

Who are you when:

A project is failing?
Someone challenges your decision?
The team resists change?

What to do:

1. Phone off the table. Face down is not polite.
2. Airplane mode. Put it out of sight.
3. Morning rule. Partner before phone.
4. Dinner rule. Only one phone between you.
5. Client rule. Keep it in your bag.
6. Home rule. Do not carry it room to room.
7. Build the habit. Small reps beat willpower.

The aim is not to hear the words.
It is for people to feel heard.

You say you’re an open-minded leader.
But how often do you really try something new before deciding it’s not for you?

I went to the local fruit and veg market last weekend.
Rows of cauliflowers, deep purple, green, even yellow.

I found myself staring and thinking,
“Ooh… I’m not sure about that one.”

And I caught myself.
That tiny thought, “I’m not sure about that”, is exactly what happens at work, every single day.

When a team member suggests a new approach.
When someone’s style of communication feels unfamiliar.
When a new process challenges the way we’ve always done it.

Our instinct is to retreat to what we know.

To stick with the familiar colour of cauliflower, metaphorically speaking.

But:
Every breakthrough in leadership, innovation, or performance started with someone daring to choose the unfamiliar.

As leaders, our job isn’t to know it all, it’s to stay curious.

To try before we judge.
To lead from openness, not assumption.

So next time you feel that tiny resistance, pause, and ask yourself:

“What if this way is better…?”

What I heard from a new manager is, I thought “being across everything” made me responsible. It didn’t. It made me anxious and made my team dependent.”

Now, real leadership is letting go of the illusion that your presence is what keeps things together.
