I took the US Marketing Department from a department of one (me) to a thriving marketing engine with a full scale production team in house. We focused on visual storytelling and strong lead generation techniques and have outpaced our competition in video and brand building. We launched an original series called Design vs. Build that has gotten hundreds of thousands of views and 15 Telly awards. The goal was to show architects and builders that we care about what they do more than we care about pushing our products. A great product with a clear message and stunning video and photography have made Kebony the premiere modified wood brand globally.

After working with TimberTown, I moved on to their parent company: OHC. Here I expanded the marketing strategy to include more video, and rather than do it all myself I added to the team. We started with a fully redesigned website, making it easier to see their expansive product offering. Then we started collecting more project photos and video so customers could be inspired by what they could do with OHC products. Next we started a simple, informative video series called TimberTips to share our knowledge or imported hardwoods and outdoor decking products. We released a 2-3 minute video a week for several months and those videos still bring thousands of views to the TimberTown/OHC YouTube channel.

My first “real” marketing job. I started out as a marketing specialist, which means you are the all encompassing marketing department. This gave me experience is all aspects of marketing: web, social, graphic design, photography, video, content marketing, analytics, branding, and more. I also started creating lead generation forms and pdf resources. My most popular “ebook” was 6 Deck Patterns to Save you Money, and other ebooks, it helped double website visits year-over-year for three years in a row and those same ebooks are still used today, bringing in tens of thousands of leads for TimberTown.

1) Backstory

In the film industry, 
a backstory tells you who the main character is.

In the same way, 
you need to understand your main character.

Despite your main character energy
the lead role belongs to your customer.

How do you do that?

By learning their "backstory." 

I’m not just talking about their job title.

You need to learn 
their hobbies, 
what they watch, 
what they listen to, 
what side of the bed they sleep on…

You get it. 

And, most importantly, 
learn why they buy from your competitor instead of you. 

With this information,
you can create your main character (ideal customer)
and move on to phase 2 of the MFing Framework.
