I have a confession: I’m a vibe hirer.

If you are on my team, you definitely know this about me and when you received an almost immediate offer thought "she's odd?".

Before you think I’m crazy (I probably am), I prefer to hire on gut feel. 

Why? 

Because it’s hard to change someone’s attitude, learning mindset, commitment, drive, and resilience — but it’s much easier to share domain expertise, up-skill, and learn on the job.

Even for technical roles, I believe that if you pick the right individual on vibe, you’ll find they’re not messing you around on the technical side either.

Of course, there’s a balance: clear expectations and a solid onboarding plan make sure vibe-led hires hit the ground running.

Investing in next-generation retail is no longer optional – it’s the key to staying relevant and driving growth in 2025’s retail landscape.

Take Baby Bunting as an example. 

After unveiling its new “Store of the Future” format earlier this year, the results have been striking: refurbished stores delivered a 28% uplift in sales. 

This compounded with other iniatives across the business delivering gross margins surpassing the 40% target, and net profit soared more than 400% year-on-year.

What does this tell us?

Shoppers are rewarding retailers who create engaging, modern formats that go beyond traditional shop-floors.

Refurbishment and re-investment are not costs, but levers for growth.

Retailers who fail to evolve risk being left behind as customer expectations accelerate.

In a market where discretionary spend is still under pressure, the winners are those bold enough to invest in customer-led innovation – whether through store design, digital integration, or service experience.

2025 is proving that relevance comes from reinvention.

Everything Is Not an Emergency. 

In business it’s important to stay lean and mean when scaling. 

To support this strategy I highly recommend working with great fractional talent like; Mal Chia, Iain Calvert, Bryan Cleary, Melissa Northey, Nathan Bush, Anna Samkova and Saul Kropman. 

When everything is treated as an emergency, nothing really is. 

Without operational discipline and clear priorities, growth can stall or vanish overnight.

An excellent fractional resource will help to you pinpoint one to three of your most important priorities, then double down on those while parking everything else.

Here’s a simple framework for deciding where to put time, energy and budget:

🔹 Bucket 1: Business Critical & Part of Your Advantage

Activities that define why you win — product design, merchandising, or your main acquisition channel. 

Hire or retain top talent here; if turnover is less then $10m the founders should own these roles.

🔹 Bucket 2: Business Critical but Not a Differentiator

Essential “table stakes” tasks: uploading products, coding emails, customer support, basic ops. 

Errors hurt, but excellence won’t set you apart. 

Keep costs sensible and aim for competence, not overinvestment.

Can this be your offshore advantage? It was ours at Everten. 

🔹 Bucket 3: Not Critical (Yet) but Could Build Advantage

New initiatives that need to go from zero to one before they add value — e.g. a new product line or sales channel. 

Bring in proven expertise on a project basis, then hand over to your core team once they’re established.

This is where my list above of epic fractional talent will set you up for success. 

🔹 Bucket 4: Neither Critical nor Advantageous

Work that adds no value. 

Examples: reports no one reads, unnecessary vendor calls, complex processes created by juniors, lengthy decks for small teams. 

Simplify or stop them.

Start working with natural language tools to gain live insights and actionable recommendations. 

Pages of static spreadsheets lead to nothing in my experience.
