I launched CarterBags.com on shoestring budget and have generated thousands of sales through organic LinkedIn marketing alone. I launched CarterBags.com to solve the age old problem of not being able to find a practical and stylish ladies’ laptop bag which are also chic.

Due to supply and demand issues I have been out of stock half the time (that's a story for another day).

Through growing my own business I have developed a wealth of knowledge around how to use social media, social selling, product design, business and I also have an extensive background in sales 💖

OMG almost 3 years of Carter- Exclusive Ladies’ Laptop Bags ❤️

I honestly can’t believe it!

In year 1&2 there were some definite bum clenching moments I thought  wouldn’t make it through so I didn’t really celebrate.

Year 3 hasn’t been without its challenges and has felt a little like wading through treacle at some points.

But we keep banging the drum and pushing forward don’t we 🙌🏻❤️

Last year I was lucky enough to shadow Alice Rowen Hall in her amazing e-com retail business and it inspired me so much.

Recently I have been trying to look at my business more objectively rather than being so emotionally attached to the brand.

I have someone coming in to help me with this over the next couple of months as I am far too protective of my laptop bags 😂🙄

While I don’t see my business as my baby… I do see it as years of work and sometimes can be too scared to make bold moves as when they’ve gone ‘wrong’ before the financial implications have been stifling and frustrating to say the least.

I haven’t really celebrated a business birthday so far as I’ve been so preoccupied with working ‘in’ the business. But this year Rebecca Stevenson and I will 100% celebrate together.

She has been my amazing Designer since I started and we have had a great working relationship over the last 3 years. She is the calm Ying to my crazy Yang 🤣 Patient, kind, talented and brilliant at what she does.

I am so lucky to have hit the jackpot finding her at the start.

A couple of things I have learnt along the way is not to underestimate myself and not to think that because someone labels themselves as an expert that they know better than me when it comes to my business❤️🙌🏻👌🏻

My vision for CarterBags.com goes far beyond laptop bags… step by step… we will get there 🙌🏻😎

Trying to get one good picture for the grid 😂 the wind & sun were not co-operating this morning!

As I couldn’t run today due to my knee injury from last week I was a Marshall at the park run today and I absolutely LOVED it 😂

I think I maybe did over kill on the enthusiasm once I got stuck in, but I genuinely think everyone is so inspiring doing their Saturday morning run! People of all different abilities and experiences 🙌🏻👌🏻👏🏻

Love to see people pushing through and completing it no matter how tough 🤜🏻 

I didn’t want to miss it even if I couldn’t take part and my partner got his PB today which I take full credit for as elite cheerleader 😂 📣 

Love soaking up the good vibes at park run, if you don’t do it yet- go along to your local one and get started even if it’s the one exercise you do in a week 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 don’t have to run you can walk or skip too!

When I started my business all I knew was that I wanted to create laptop bags for women which were stylish, affordable and sustainable.

I didn’t know anything about:

Technical Bag Design
Structural Integrity of Laptop Bags
Sustainable Technologies & Materials
Product Lifecycles
Manufacturing in China
International Shipping 
Manufacturing History of England

I also didn’t have any knowledge of running a product based business and understanding:

Overheads
The difference in marketing a product vs a service
Fulfilment and the complexities of trying to do it yourself from a rural location 😂
The reality of having an artic truck of stock delivered to your house

Product based businesses are SO different from service based businesses.

You HAVE to be committed to keep going 🤜🏻 Keep learning 🙌🏻 And be prepared to make mistakes 👌🏻

But my major takeaway is that reality is the best marketing! I have shared the entire journey for the longest time on here and I have never proclaimed to be an expert.

You CAN grow a business with zero marketing budget IF you are prepared to put the time in and show up.

All of the things you are experiencing/learning/actioning are of genuine interest to others. Maybe because they like the concept, they like the product, or they like you…

Heck you may even have followers who love to hate you 😂 (hey guys 👋)

Imperfect but done is better than nothing at all 💖🙌🏻

You can research almost everything you need to know to start and market your own business online, and the best form of learning is doing! And keep doing!

Stay focused, stay visible, keep researching & putting the effort in- your results will come😉 But you have to not give up, EVEN WHEN YOU REALLY WANT TO 😅

Park run update 💖 Today I came joint last 😅

I attended Park Run today but still wasn’t able to run due to my knee injury ☹️🙄🥹 So I walked it.

Very very annoying.

But hey ho! Still got out and did it 🙌🏻

Still posting my updates to keep me accountable. This is so consistent for me, my twelfth week!

Followed by a 12 year old birthday party at the house.

Roll on Monday 😂🙌🏻

I will be doing a happy dance 🕺 

Sooooooooo looking forward to being able to get properly stuck into work without any interruptions and some really exciting projects to get stuck into 💖🙏🏻🐣

I didn’t do my park run update at the weekend but I did do my park run 🙌🏻

My best time yet at 32:20 seconds 👌🏻🥳

I used to be able to do 5k in the morning and evening when Matilda was in a buggy.

It all went downhill once she decided she wanted to walk at a snails pace everywhere and look up every drain pipe for incy wincy spider 😂

Cherished memories but definitely not good for fitness.

Having no option to leave the house without her at that age and beyond (until now) it’s been a struggle to stay active at any kind of level.

So I’m really pleased to have started this and hope to get down to under 30 mins over the summer.

Craig Brookes has been amazing helping me with nutrition to support this and additional exercise during the week.

And helping me to realise I can just do stuff and no one will die 🤣

I will be looking like a super model by the summer 😂😂😂

I’m lucky enough that my partner will get up at stupid o’clock in the morning on a Saturday to run it with me 🙌🏻👌🏻

Matilda’s interested peaked at week 3 now she has decided it’s too much effort 😂

I have really started to realise how little I have been prioritising what I actually want to do with my spare time. Yikes! That is something I need to manage better- for sure!

Has anyone else started with park run recently? It’s such a great community of runners and volunteers and people at all levels- you can just walk it until you feel you are able to run/jog. I highly recommend it for mental and physical health!

If you’re in a bit of a slump get off your bum and commit to this one thing a week and everything else will follow 🙌🏻☀️👌🏻

Park run update. I did it but I didn’t do very well 🥴 

My knee packed in on the first run round so I had to walk the rest and sobbed all the way round the last lap because I wanted to run and I couldn’t 😅☹️

I tried on the second lap but the pain was too much so decided to carry on with just walking.

And people kept saying welldone but I didn’t want a welldone because I wasn’t doing well 🤣

What a diva!

Had a lovely hug with a couple of ladies at the end and a pep talk 😅 bless them!

Such lovely people.

I will be annoyed all week that I couldnt run.
So I’m going to head home put my leg up and have a glass of vino in the sunny garden 💖

Still completed it but not how I wanted.

That’s life.

There’s always next week and getting closer to getting my 25th run t-shirt 🙌🏻🙏🏻🤩


On the plus side I have good company this weekend and the sun is out ☀️

I started auditing & editing the website yesterday and this is my favourite product shot we’ve ever done at CarterBags.com 🤩

I have added so much more information to the home page 🙌🏻💖

And am going through all the policies and warranties etc today… but probably most importantly I’ll be editing the ‘Our Journey’ page and it needs alot of TLC.

Tomorow will be product pages.
Making them more succinct and user friendly.

Shopify is such a great solution for small businesses I think. 

Lots of marketing professionals give Shopify a hard time for its limited functionality but I actually think for independent businesses it’s an easy to manage solution and you definitely can SEO optimise your site (even though lots of developers will tell you it’s impossible).

Minor frustrations include: limitations on adding new sections to collection & product pages.

Apart from that Shopify is pretty awesome and with clever copy & creative, consistent marketing and a bit of TLC, you can make it work- especially for a small business 🙌🏻💖

There are also a number of plug ins you can use to customise pages where the templates don’t do your products justice.

Usually, if there’s a will, there’s a way.
(Please tell me I’m not the only person that imagines a tiny man called Will every time I hear that 😂).

I bloody love how crocs have revamped their brand in recent years!! I’m a huge fan of the hiking croc 😂 Which I’ve recieved much grief for- but I seriously LOVE a chunky croc! 🐊 

I’ll even wear them to the pub 🤣

I also LOVE a sour cream Pringle on the odd occasion.

It’s true- once you pop you can’t stop!

Is everyone okay though? Because I think someone at the Pringle factory went pop and then just kept going when they dreamt up this collab 😂

I wouldn’t in my wildest dreams purchase a pair of these- but I reckon they will go mega viral on socials and certainly create a lot of PR and advertising for both brands.

One thing both of these brands have is a legacy 🙌🏻🐊 which kind of makes this collab work! It’s unexpected but surprisingly refreshing.
