That’s a strong signal that nature is finally being recognized as an investable asset. 

Financial mechanisms like biodiversity bond funds can complement philanthropy and public investment to ensure nature is valued as a critical asset class.

Unlike project-specific bonds, this fund invests in a mix of labeled green, social, and sustainability bonds as well as corporate bonds from companies contributing to biodiversity outcomes.  🦜🐠🌱

This is my favorite part of the day: quiet, ocean, coffee, and a fresh set of project notes.

Most days, the real work in blue finance is not glamorous, because capital does not fund vibes. It funds clarity.

One question sits at the center of my work right now:
What kind of capital has to go first to make the rest possible?

In blue finance, deals often succeed or fail on one thing:
the first cheque must turn unknown risk into priced risk.

If that cheque does not buy a concrete milestone, it is not first-in capital, it is just early money.

Think: a signed contract, a permit, validated unit economics, or operational proof.

That is why so many “blue” pipelines look exciting on paper, then stall.

I just finished reading "Investing in the Ocean: Financing the Path to 30x30" by Karen Sack, from Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance (ORRAA)

Here's my takeaway:

-> 30x30 is not a policy target problem, it is a 𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒄𝒌 problem. 

Without de-risking and pipeline-building, capital will not show up at scale.

The ocean is valued at around $24T, yet it still attracts less than 1% of global capital flows.

If investors keep saying "there is no pipeline", they are partly right. 

But the deeper issue is the missing middle, the gap between grants and investable scale. 

That's where projects stall without risk data, policy clarity, and transaction sizes that make sense.

What changes the game:

1️⃣ 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 and multilaterals putting real capital on the table to 𝐝𝐞-𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐳𝐞, not just convene.

2️⃣ 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 taking early risk so later-stage capital can price deals properly.

3️⃣ 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 acting as one system, because ocean risk is already on balance sheets, just not labeled that way.

If we want marine protection that is real (not paper parks), blue finance has to move from nice-to-have to investable, priced, and scaled.

When people say "private capital will not come in," I think the issue is often more basic:

key assumptions are still too unclear.

In many blue economy projects, the key assumptions are still too unclear for an investor or lender to get comfortable:

➡️ Revenue: who pays, through what mechanism, and how stable is demand?

➡️ Enforceability: what rights exist in practice if something goes wrong?

➡️ FX and convertibility: if revenues are local and financing is in hard currency, what is the plan?

➡️ O&M: who is responsible for performance over time, and what happens if it slips?

➡️ Counterparty risk: how reliable is the payer, partner, or public entity?

➡️ Governance: who makes decisions, who approves changes, and what triggers intervention?

From a project preparation and structuring perspective, this is often where momentum gets lost.

One practical improvement for programmes and facilities:
build a simple investor-facing memo template during project preparation, before there is a live transaction.

It forces clarity early and helps teams see what still needs work.

Over the past 20 years, my work has led me to work with coastal communities around the world and develop + implement the right strategies and action plans for each community with contextually-specific meanings and responsible governance mechanisms.

Working with governments, nonprofit organizations, and corporations, I've grown my skills to be proficient in the field and in the boardroom. 

What I love the most are cross-cultural and cross-functional collaborations and marveling at the beauty found in Nature.

My specialties include the Blue Economy, mangrove restoration, artificial reefs, coral reef restoration, living shorelines, strategic planning, international development, project management, public speaking, technical assistance and capacity building in resilience and adaptation to climate change.
