Situational awareness is more rare than we think. 🦄  

As a founder and CEO, and someone who is making a lot of decisions, hired people, and even messed up a few times - there is one skill that has saved me more than once.

It’s not being smart.
It’s not being fast.
It’s not even being funny.

It’s something called 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀. 🧠

But let me tell you a secret.

😅 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀.

Once, I met a guy who wanted a job at my company.

He said he was a “marketing genius”.

He showed me some slides about how cool he was on social media.

He kept interrupting me… again… and again… (7 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴 to be exact).

He did all this while I was trying to explain what we 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 do at our company.

Until I stopped him - looked him in the eye, and asked:

“𝘋𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘥𝘰?”

He blinked.

Paused.

And said: “Uhh… something with AI?”

That’s when I knew this guy had 𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼 situational awareness.

Here’s the interesting fact...

🧬 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆.

Humans didn’t survive because we were big and strong. We survived because we were 𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦.
 
We could read the tribe. Spot danger. Notice weird behavior (like when one serious-looking caveman approached you with a rock).

And if you didn’t notice someone in your cave about to throw a rock at you… congratulations, your bloodline just ended with a “boink!”

Indeed, some genes like 𝗦𝗟𝗖𝟲𝗔𝟰, 𝗕𝗗𝗡𝗙, and 𝗔𝗗𝗥𝗔𝟮𝗕 actually help with this. 

They help us notice things faster, understand feelings, and stay calm when things get tense.

While some people are genetically 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 clueless, they can also train their situational awareness. 

Just 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲.

✅ Practice listening more than you speak.
✅ Notice micro-expressions.
✅ Observe your environment like a detective.

I think my son has "Boss" genes. 😅  

He crosses his legs like a businessman when watching TV.
He tells his mom things like; “Mom, we need a deadline!”
He even told me one day: “Dad, I’m the leader of my friends.”
 
😑 𝗛𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁.  

Now, before you think I’m raising a little dictator, let me explain.

I’ve spent many years building my career - giving talks, leading teams, and creating new businesses.

And my son has seen it all.
- He’s watched me speak on stage and on Zoom.
- He’s seen me guide my team through hard choices.
- He’s even observed me pacing around the house, deep in thought.

So maybe it’s not shocking that he acts this way.

But here’s the strange part…
- I 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 walk like a boss.
- I 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 talk to his mom like a boss.
- But 𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴.

And since I work with genetics, I started wondering...

🧬 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗯𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 "𝗯𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆"?

Turns out, there are genes linked to being confident, making decisions, and leading others. Like 𝗗𝗥𝗗𝟰 and 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗧 which influence risk-taking and influence.

While no single gene makes someone a “boss”, the 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗼 may result in higher likelihood of becoming one.

But one thing’s for sure...
- As a parent, it’s 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘯𝘺.
- As a CEO, it’s 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨.
- As a biologist… it’s 𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨.

Because I realized - leadership may not be something we teach, it could be something our kids watch, absorb, and maybe even inherit.

So next time your child asks, “What job should I do when I grow up?”...

What does a Llama and I have in common? 🦙

Nope, I don’t chew grass. 🤣 

And nope, I don’t spit at people when I’m angry (though there are definitely days in startup life when I might feel like it!)

But recently, I realized I do have something in common with a 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 special llama…

👩‍💻 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 - 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮’𝘀 𝗟𝗟𝗮𝗠𝗔.
 
It’s short for Large Language Model Meta AI - basically, a super-smart robot brain that learns how to talk like humans!

And it all started with Singapore’s big dream to be a world leader in AI by 2030!

Imagine Singapore like a giant orchestra.
 
Each part of the country - health, transport, finance, education - is a different musical instrument.

To play beautiful music, the orchestra needs a smart conductor. 

That conductor?
 
𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 (𝗔𝗜).

Singapore is teaming up with big tech companies like Meta and e27 to train these "AI conductors", and they’re inviting a few chosen startups to build special AI models that focus on very specific topics.

And guess what?

🎉 ConnectingDNA Global 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽!
 
We're now working directly with Meta and Singapore’s national AI efforts to build an AI that can “speak” biology.
 
It can understand how your body works and give you advice made just for you.

Does life change over 40? 4️⃣0️⃣  

Close to 𝟰𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 will hit 40 years old in the next 3 years.

🧠 𝗟𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗶𝗻.

As a startup founder from that demographic, I run a company while juggling teams, timelines, and tech. 

Despite my passion for what I do, I find that I no longer have the energy to pull all-nighters like when I was in my 20's playing World of Warcraft past midnight.

Yes. When life goes past level 40, the game gets harder. 

This isn’t a glitch - it’s biology.

If you are 40's, your body isn’t just randomly falling apart. It’s trying to optimize energy for survival. 

Because from an evolutionary standpoint, people over 40 were the wise elders. They weren’t supposed to be chasing investors or joining CrossFit.

They were meant to lead, guide, and 𝘯𝘢𝘱 𝘸𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘺. 😅 

In fact, some of your genes actually 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝟰𝟬. 

Like 𝗖𝗟𝗢𝗖𝗞, which makes your sleep rhythms become sensitive. To 𝗔𝗣𝗢𝗘, that impacts your brain health, and memory.

But there’s good news.

🧬 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀.

If you feed your body well, train smart, sleep deep, and build great habits - you won't just be surviving 40 - you'll be dominating it!

Because the moment you hit 40, your mindset becomes your 𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘵.

So yes - life 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 change over 40.
- Your biology reroutes.
- Your energy recalibrates.
- Your priorities realign.

But you know what else changes?

You stop caring what people think. And start focusing on what really matters.

And weirdly…
You start enjoying more vegetables. 🥦

Why Life is Like Traffic. 🚘🚖

Yesterday, I was stuck in a traffic jam in Singapore.

Cars weren’t moving, people were sighing, and one uncle in the car next to me was digging his nose like it was an 𝘖𝘭𝘺𝘮𝘱𝘪𝘤 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵. 😅

As a biologist 𝘈𝘕𝘋 a storyteller, I did what any overly reflective person would do… I asked myself.

“What if life is just like traffic?”

And suddenly… 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 made sense.

🚦 𝗪𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘃𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗲'𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲.

There are fancy cars like Ferraris.
Small cars, electric cars, and even motorcycles.
All zipping along the highways of the world.  

In a sense, cars are just like us humans.

Some of us are tall, short, big, small.
Some of us look like supermodels. 
Some of us are geeky and smart.

While our "vehicles" (bodies) look different, we are all 99% the same inside... down to our every DNA. 

And...

🚧 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰, 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘆.

Some people overtake past you.
Others drive slow and make you late.
And sometimes... your car 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 breaks down.

Like traffic, life is unpredictable, and totally not in our control.

Traffic shows us what life is really like.

- We all start somewhere.
- We all get stuck sometimes.
- But if we keep going - even if it’s just a little bit at a time.

We all reach where we’re meant to go. 🌄
