Hi, I'm the Founder and Portfolio Manager of MAD Partnership, where MAD stands for Make A Difference.

Three years ago, I was at a crossroads.
 
After 9 years of investing full time, I was getting restless. I wanted something more fulfilling. But the question was: 𝐝𝐨 𝐈 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐣𝐨𝐛, 𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬?
 
Here’s how I weighed it:

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐛 𝐑𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐞

1.A steady salary, with the comforts that come with it — credit cards, home loans, predictable increments
2.But it meant giving up flexibility, fewer holidays, and long, rigid office hours
3.And after nearly a decade away, I wasn’t sure how well I’d re-integrate into corporate life
 

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐑𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐞

1.Start with zero income, plus upfront capital expenditure
2. No guarantee of success — I could be left with nothing but a hole in my pocket
3.Forced to step way outside my comfort zone — learning networking, marketing, sales
4.Longer hours, with no clear “off switch” at 6pm
 
On paper, the job looked safer. But here’s what swung me:

👉 𝐈𝐟 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐛𝐞𝐝, 𝐈 𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐈’𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐭.
 
So, I took the plunge.
 
Fast forward 3 years — no regrets.

1. My investment results for clients have been good, and many have topped up (a sign they’re happy with the returns)
2.Income hasn’t matched my last job (yet), but it’s growing steadily
3.I’ve learned new skills: building a website, marketing myself, closing sales
4.I’ve developed thicker skin (old friends laugh at my “cringe-y” marketing, but I keep going)
5.Most importantly, I’ve had richer conversations with my kids — sharing lessons from the journey they wouldn’t have seen if I’d played it safe
 
All in all, I’m in a really happy place.

Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA) advice is mostly rubbish.
 
When I started investing, I learned this the hard way — losing a 5-figure sum from DCA.
 
Here’s why DCA can do more harm than good:
 
The textbook idea says: when prices drop, you should happily add more at a “cheaper” price.
 
But it’s not that simple.
 
Too many investors get fixated 𝐨𝐧 𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭. That’s just 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 and the 𝐬𝐮𝐧𝐤 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐲 at work.
 
Instead, flip the question around:
 👉 If you had no position today, would you 𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑙𝑙 want to buy this stock?
 
That’s the only question that matters.
 
Here’s how I think about falling prices:

𝟏.𝐅𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐲.
 Is it a real deterioration in fundamentals, or just broad market fear? I update my valuation model.
 

𝟐.𝐀𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐲.
•If fundamentals are intact, the drop mabe a gift.
•If fundamentals have worsened, it’s time to trim—or exit.
 
Every buy decision should stand on its own merits.
 
Buying just because it’s “cheaper than before” is not investing. It’s wishful thinking.
DCA is great if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Over 97% of Warren Buffett’s wealth came after he turned 65.
 
It was not because he became a much better investor.
 
He simply made use of the most powerful force in investing.
 
Compounding.
 
Over the past 60 years, Warren Buffet has helped his investors grow their wealth at a 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 annual rate of 19.9%.
 
𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 in investing occurs when your money earns returns, and those returns start earning returns too. 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞, 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡.
 
In contrast, 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 occurs when something increases by a fixed amount each year. A classic example is bonds, which provide a predictable return each year.
 
Had Buffet’s return been linear (i.e. 19.9% linear growth over 60 years), his investment value would have increased 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝟏𝟐 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 (19.9% × 60 years).
 
But because the returns were compounded, Berkshire’s value increased over 𝟓𝟑,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬! (1.19960)
 
In other words, compounding ensured that $𝟏,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐭’𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝟔𝟎 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐠𝐨 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 $𝟓𝟑 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲.
 
The lesson for investors?
 

𝟏.𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝.
Over time, compounding generates far superior returns compared to linear growth assets. Choose equities over bonds.
 

𝟐.𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞.
In the early years, compounding feels slow — almost linear. But as time passes, the effect snowballs. The longer you stay invested, the more compounding accelerates your wealth.

Ever wondered why you lose money buying great companies?
 
Because a 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 and a 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐤 aren’t always the same thing.
 
A good company has:
•Strong growth and profitability
•A durable competitive advantage
•Great management and vision
 
But here’s the catch: if you pay too high a price, you may still lose money.
 
A good stock, on the other hand, is a company trading at an attractive price. One where the market hasn’t fully priced in its true value.
 
👉 The distinction matters.
•You can lose buying a great company at the wrong price.
•You can win buying an average company at the right price.
 
At the end of the day, anyone can recognize a good company. But only those who spot good stocks build consistently profitable portfolios. That’s the real edge.
