In 2016 after several years of analysis and experimentation with blockchain technologies in financial services and capital markets, I cofounded SettleMint with one objective: to simplify the blockchain transformation journey for enterprises.

Prior to SettleMint, I moved to Belgium in 2006 where I completed my MBA then went to work at KBC. First as an internal management and operations consultant, later as the COO of the Belgian Consumer Finance business and finally as the Head of Platform Innovation at KBC Securities where I was responsible for the technical side of the online retail brokerage platform ‘Bolero’ and the equity crowdfunding platform ‘Bolero Crowdfunding’.

A Canadian by origin and an Economist (Western) and MBA (Vlerick) by education, I spent the first 7 years of my international career in Tokyo, working in FX brokerage and where I launched two online retailing companies.

We (all of us) just crossed an important milestone, one that goes far beyond “real estate tokenization” and goes straight to the heart of what Hernando de Soto called “dead capital”.

Our team at SettleMint, together with our partner Inspire for Solutions Development has been working with RER | السجل العقاري to digitise property registration, enable tokenization and fractional ownership of real estate, and embed this into the national registry.

In his recent keynote, the CEO of Saudi Real Estate Registry made it very clear:

A modern, trustworthy property registry is not just an IT upgrade. It is economic infrastructure and a foundation for long-term prosperity.

He stressed three priorities that resonate deeply with de Soto’s work and with our mission:

- Turn property records into enforceable, investable rights – visible to the state, to citizens and to investors;
- Create a single, trusted source of truth for ownership that reduces disputes, forgery and opacity;
- Open the system to capital - local and global - while protecting citizens, sovereignty and the rule of law.

Hernando de Soto estimated that trillions of dollars of assets worldwide remain “dead capital”. Homes, land and properties that cannot be properly registered, collateralised or transferred, and therefore cannot fuel entrepreneurship, investment or social mobility. Our work with the Saudi RER is a 21st-century implementation of the solution he argued for.

What makes this powerful is the combination of:

- A sovereign, tamper-evident property ledger;
- Tokenization and fractionalization of property rights;
- A regulated digital marketplace;
- Stablecoin and tokenized-cash settlement, so value can move instantly, 24/7, across borders.

This model is replicable in developing nations where property is still largely informal and in advanced markets like Saudi Arabia, where the property sector is already sophisticated. In both cases, the outcome is the same: unequivocal economic advantage – more liquidity, better use of assets as productive capital, stronger investor confidence, and new pathways for families to accumulate and transfer wealth.

Used consciously, AI and blockchain are tools of liberation: they reinforce property rights, support economic liberalisation and safeguard fundamental human rights by making ownership transparent, auditable and enforceable.
