Stop hiring the resume. Start hiring the attitude. 

Instead of “Do you have a Bachelors degree?”

Let’s talk about who you are. 

Turn the resume over and just chat. 

Let’s make interviews WAY less rigid. 

Almost every job can be taught. 

Attitude and emotional intelligence is a far FAR bigger indicator of future success  than some degree from a prestigious college.

If 90% of jobs can be taught then why do we continue to prioritize education and experience?

Instead of college degrees let’s look at attitude. 

Instead of experience let’s look at coachability. 

We used to prioritize degrees and experience.  

It didn’t work. 

So now, during interviews, we turn the resume over. 

Instead of what you’ve done, let’s talk about who you are. 

We’ve learned that attitude is much more important than skill. 

So we build our culture around traits like humility, kindness, authenticity, and passion. 

We teach the role. 

It works!!

While HR plays a huge role in company culture, asking HR to create culture is ridiculous! 

Culture comes from the very top. 

Values and beliefs must be established from the owners, founders, or executive team. 

And now here’s the most important rub…

Their actions and decisions ALWAYS align with those values and beliefs. 

HR can implement an much amazing stuff as they want to support the culture, but if TOP LEADERSHIP is not consistently backing up those values and beliefs with actions, IT WILL NEVER HOLD!!!!!!

You can’t say one thing, do another. 

And this is where most companies falter….

It’s let’s put your money where your mouth is when sh*t hits the fan and things get hard, are executives gonna STAND FIRM on the values, or just toss them aside????!!!!

THIS. IS. CULTURE. BABYYYYYYY!!!

You can’t just talk. 

ACTIONS!!! DECISIONS!!!! 

THE REAL FREAKING STUFF!!!! 

If beliefs and values always hold firm at the very top, no matter what….

Then HR comes behind and freaking crushes it! 

This alignment is HUGE in creating and actually SUSTAINING a great company culture!!!

Years back we had this vendor we were spending about $2mil a year with. Everything was fantastic until their top 2 performers wanted a raise. 😬

This vendor was dynamite. 🧨 

Customer service was always tip top. Prompt. Friendly. Personal. As good as it gets. 

Operationally sound. Supply was always on time. Always accurate. Quality was incredible. 

The two employees responsible…

Well, eventually they needed a raise (don’t we all) 

So they asked for one. 

$40,000 between the two of them. 

Leadership said no. 

So, as great employees do when they’re not paid their worth….

They left. 

And over time, our customer service started to deteriotate. 

Less friendly. Less prompt. Less focused. 

Leads times dragged. Quality issues arose. 

And eventually our patience wore thin. 

The following year we spent $400k with them. 

From $2,000,000 to $400,000. 

A $1,600,000 hit. 

All because leadership refused to give out $40,000 in raises. 

The lesson here: 

Pay people what they are worth. 

Or it’ll cost you. 

Big time. 

In this case, exactly $1.6 million dollars. 😘

Wall posters & signage won’t change a company’s culture. 

Neither will off-site retreats. 

Memos, emails - more emptiness. 

Culture can’t be a forced issue. 

Yet WAY too many organizations try. 

You know what changes organizational culture?

Leadership behavior. 

✅Who they fire. 
✅Who they hire. 
✅What they prioritize. 
✅Where they spend their time. 

Does leadership fire that toxic high performer or choose to look the other way? 

Does leadership spend lots of 1 on 1 time with their people? 

Does leadership decide to take off Christmas Eve or rip another 1/2 day of billing? 

Culture is created in the trenches in the daily decisions made by leadership. 

Not some damn billboard. 

So throw away all those stupid mouse pads, mugs, and lobby displays. 

No one is buying any of that BS. 

We are all looking 👀 at YOU bosses….

You say you want a better culture? 

What’s your move?

Toxic high performer or just flat out “suck at your job” toxic….

Toxic is toxic and you know what its like if you’ve ever worked for one. 

It’s all about them and their ego. 

All decisions are “run it by me first” 🤦🏻‍♂️ micro managing at its finest. 

With a toxic manager - there’s no TEAM. 

That would mean dishing out the credit to others, something toxic managers don’t do. 

But here’s the tug….

When toxic managers are allowed to stay. 

All the good talent leaves. 

Because great talent doesn’t have time for that nonsense. 

So all you companies out there choosing to look the other way….

Fire your toxic managers. 

Because it’s gonna cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars to replace all the great employees fixing to walk out that front door!

Titles, corner offices, and reserved parking spaces don’t make you a leader. 

Impacting and influencing others, THIS is leadership. 

Anyone can do it. 

And you don’t need to ask permission. 

So wherever you are right now in your career, just start leading. 

How to Lead When You’re Not in Charge:

3 Little Tips: 

1️⃣ Stop complaining and start moving 

Dont complain about the situation. Ain’t no one got time for that. Accept what you can and cannot control - start providing solutions to the stuff you CAN control. Move! Actions! Don’t like it? Change it! Don’t ask permission. Most likely no one cares. Just GO. 

2️⃣Freaking Encourage those around you! 

The people around you are not being encouraged enough! Guaranteed! Start seeing all the awesome things they do and show gratitude. Encourage. Tell them why their work matters and how awesome they are doing! And how proud you are of them! Praise and encourage!! True leaders do this so freaking much!!

3️⃣Be Curious, Listen, Seek to Understand AND THEN get others involved! 

Great leadership is never telling. Always explaining why. This means asking lots of questions. Collaborating. Open dialogue with others on the team. Listen. Ask questions. Listen ask questions and then listen some more!! Then once you have, get others involved. Together is ALWAYS better. Leadership is never domineering or authoritative. It’s always collaborative. US. WE. TOGETHER!!! 

Here’s the point guys, there’s a whole world of horrible bosses out there. 

And these guys think they are leaders because of some damn title. 

And it bonkers - but hey that’s the way this world words. 

Who cares - just step up and lead. 

There are people right now on your team that are desperately looking for SOMEONE - 

FREAKING ANYONE to step up and lead!!! 

So GO LEAD! STEP UP!! 

Be the leader you freaking wish you always had!! 

The world - your people - we ALL need it!!!!!!

Big ego, insecure bosses that tear you down…

Just remember, there’s something wrong with THEM, not you. 

Unfortunately, there are a whole lot of bosses out there who don’t deserve to be in charge of a team. 

Either they’re straight up rotten or they weren’t trained to manage people….

Regardless, they treat you bad, have zero emotional intelligence, and manage from FEAR. 

Great bosses build you up. 

They create healthy work environments where people feel safe to speak their minds. 

They invite feedback, listen, and dont care if you make a mistake. 

Great bosses care about healthy. 

And they care about your success more than their own. 

If you’ve got a bad boss who tears you down all the time, don’t let it destroy your confidence.

It’s them. 

Not you. 

Get out or stand tall. 

They’ll be gone soon enough anyways. 

Because performance always suffers in toxic environments.

I was helping out in one of our branches this week when I noticed something troubling…

EVERY single decision was being run through the branch manager. 

Delivery charges, pricing, customer issues….

You name it and it was all coming back to one person for a sign off. 

I get it, you are responsible for a division and it’s your neck on the line. You want complete control. 

But it’s not the way to lead. 

It could be perfectionism. Or the power of making every decision feeding the ego. 

But whatever it is, you just can’t do it. 

You have to trust your people and empower them to make these decisions on their own. 

Leadership is so much more about zooming out and seeing the big picture and working ON the business and the people…

You can’t do this if you are jumping back into the weeds every 20 minutes to “sign off.”

Leadership is not control. 

Leadership is empowering. 

Show me a manager that controls everything and I’ll show you a division that will not grow. 

Coach up and then let go. 

Our people must be empowered to make decisions on their own, mess up, and learn. 

It’s multiplication not division. 
Confidence in others not control. 

When you control you lose talented people. 

Because talented always have to be learning.

They want more responsibilities and bigger challenges. 

Take this from them and they will leave you for a place that will. 

Control doesn’t work. 

Never has. 
Never will. 

So lift your people up.

Give them the keys to the car. 

You just sit in the backseat and enjoy the ride. 😘

In my last job I had a great boss. He encouraged me to suggest ideas. He loved it when I raised concerns or asked questions. He didn’t care if I made a mistake. 

And because of that I was passionate and outspoken. 

We all were. 

The business flourished. 

Then one day my boss left the company. 

The new boss was different. 

He didn’t care about my opinions. 

He knew all the answers. 

When I made a mistake he made me feel like an idiot. 

“This is the way we do it” was the answer when I raised concerns. 

So, over time…..

I stopped being outspoken. 

My passion dwindled. 

And eventually I stopped caring. 

I left the company soon after that. 

Many of us did. 

And that company no longer exists today. 

The lesson here is this: 

Being concerned, asking questions, and suggesting ideas ARE GREAT THINGS!!!!!!

They are a sign of a very healthy culture. 

Our people speaking up IS POWERFUL. 

So cherish it, encourage it, and listen when they do. 

Because when they stop speaking up, it’s a sign that we’ve got some VERY big problems.

Make sure the company you work for gives you lots of time off for family, friends, and hobbies. 

Because THAT’s the stuff that matters! 😘

Employers: GEN Z is toxic to the workplace 

Also employers: 

Work is till 5pm but plan on staying later. 
Personal calls are frowned upon. 
You get 5 vacation days a year.
Limit your bathroom breaks. 
No jeans allowed.

Employers, blaming an ENTIRE generation is complete lunacy. 

No, Gen-Z is not entitled.

They just expect transparency, inclusivity, and purpose in the workplace. 

Good for them for pushing back against the archaic rules & policies set by employers to diminish employees. 

71% of Gen-Z would quit their job tomorrow for one that better supported their well being. ❤️❤️

31% of them would take a pay cut for a happier and healthier work environment. 👏👏👏👏

They are making our workplaces better. 

We should be applauding them for caring about mental health. Their vulnerability with that topic is amazing. It’s anything but weak. 

GEN-Z. Keep pushing!! Don’t you stop. 

Because we all deserve more flexibility, better work-life balance, and healthier work spaces. 

The ways of the past…look where it got us….

The way we’ve been doing it…

IS. NOT. WORKING. 

So yah. Push away Gen-Z! 

Keep changing this toxic workplace culture we have created. 

We thank you. And we love you. 

And our future generations will thank you even more. 

Turns out, the kids are alright. 😘

No matter how much you travel for work, get back home quick. Because before you know it they’ll be all grown up and out of the house 🥹

Full stop, straight up, 💯 accountability…

Extreme ownership. 

But you can’t do it alone. 

You gotta get your team together and be REAL. 

“Guys, we suck.” 

“Guys, the numbers suck.” 

“Guys, we are always putting out fires.”

Let’s figure out what to do to make this better. 

TOGETHER. 

Stop whining and complain. 

Stop making excuses. 

Stop ignoring the brutal facts. 

BE REAL AND OWN IT!!!

And you’re only gonna make it better ONE WAY. 

Make freaking moves. 

Try things out. 

Movement. 

Forward momentum!!!
