I’m just here to show people that work doesn’t have to suck! 

I was at the mall Saturday when I ran into an old employee I used to manage. We reminisced on old times, shared a few laughs, and as we parted ways she said:

“Thanks again for what you did for me when my Mother passed away. I’ll never forget that.” 

This was back in my retail days. We decided to pay her for 3 weeks even though she didn’t have any Vacation or PTO left. 

She and her mother were super close, and she was a fantastic employee. 

It just seemed like the right thing to do and honestly I didnt think much of it. 

Obviously she did. 

Which brings me to the point. 

Business is hard and challenging and crazy and fun. It can be horrible. It can be awesome. 

It can also be inconvenient. 

What helps more than anything is having a boss that is a reasonable freaking human being. 

We’re all gonna die and when you’re on your deathbed you won’t remember that stupid account you got or that month you grossed $500k. 

You will remember the faces, the relationships you made, and the way you treated people. 

Don’t take all this too seriously. 

Yes, have ambition. Achieve. Work hard and try to hit all those crazy goals. It inspires! 

But also BE KIND, find perspective, and put yourself in others shoes. 

You may not realize how much it means to others until way down the line. 

Just remember our job is not just to deliver results but also to spread love and make this world a better place - THIS is what people remember. 😘

In my last job I had a horrible boss. 

I had grown the business from $0 to $5 million. 

We were crushing it, hiring all these amazing folks and giving them the keys to the car. 

Culture was so strong ownership kept plucking my assistant managers to open new stores. 

After some years of success I finally went in and politely asked for a raise. I was close to getting engaged and had dreams of buying a small house when we got married. 

I was told no. 

Devastated and taken aback, I drove home. 

When I got there I took out a piece of paper and started writing all the things I loved about my job. 

Every single thing was directly related to the people we had hired for the store, the relationships I had built with them, and the fun times we had together. 

But I couldn’t think of one time MY BOSS told me he was proud of me. 

I couldn’t think of one time MY BOSS had asked me about my life, or my engagement, or my dreams - or even thanked me for the weeks I worked 6 or 7 days. 

I had gotten so caught up in the fun we were having at the store that I had completely forgotten to look out for myself. 

Which, you know, you kinda gotta do once you start thinking about a family and stuff. 

The company was his incredible idea. He was the “genius” behind it all. He didn’t really care about me. He showed no desire to build any kind of relationship. 

So I left the company. 

Here’s the lesson:

This business thing is all about TEAM. That’s what makes it so much fun. All of us together, working hard to achieve goals. 

Great leaders understand this. They understand their job is to know, care for, and build people into their best selves. 

A Leaders priority is YOU. 

You feel it deep inside your heart, its soulful, and it becomes an unstoppable force, because it’s authentic! 

THIS, is what creates those special companies that we all love giving our money too. 

Because it taps into the heart. 

Leadership, taps into the heart. 

So no matter what your position is TODAY, go out and be that leader you always wish you had.

When Sarah walks into the office, her boss, who has a desk out on the floor with everyone else, looks up with a smile says “Good Morning Sarah!”

At 9am Sarah has her weekly sales meeting. Her boss is speaking,

 “revenue isnt exactly where we want it this quarter - but our activity is strong. Sarah, you are doing incredible work with Vandelet Industries. They are purchasing more frequently and have opened up two more lines. You are crushing this account - thank you for getting in there and turning it around since Jeff left. Just exceptional work.”

At Noon Sarah passes her boss in the hallway, he looks up, stops, and says:

 “hey, I’m serious about the work you’re doing over there with Vandelet Industries, I know you’ve been working your ass off. I’m so proud of you. Great freaking job.” 

At 4pm Sarah’s boss comes by her desk, “hey, I’ve been meaning to ask. How’s your mother? Did you guys get those results back? Don’t worry about missing work to get her to those appointments. It’s no biggie. We got your back.” He smiles and walks off. 

END. 

When Shawn walks into the office, his boss, as always, is in her office with the door shut. 

At 9am Shawn has his weekly sales meeting. His boss is speaking, 

“Revenue isn’t exactly where we want it this quarter, but our activity is strong. Vandelet Industries is way up. My strategy to get Shawn in there after Jeff left is working. But we need more. You guys have to push harder.”

At Noon Shawn and his boss pass each other in the hallway, his boss, staring at her phone, doesn’t look up. 

At 4pm Shawn’s boss comes by his desk, “hey, Shawn, I’ve been noticing you leaving the office way more than normal. I know your mom is going through some health stuff, but I gotta have you here more - we won’t be able to hit goal with you out of the office this much.” She turns and walks off. 

END.

LEADERS, understand the impact you have on your people! You have the ability to CHANGE LIVES!!  

Optimism. Smiling. Encouraging. Empathy!!!

THIS. IS. GREAT. LEADERSHIP. 

Creating and fostering an environment filled with encouragement and love IS YOUR JOB!!!

Setting your people at ease so they can just focus on doing incredible work! 

Encouraging them often and finding them doing exceptional work OFTEN!!

Leadership is not in the numbers. It’s not in the damn profit and loss column. It’s in the hearts of your people - you focus on THEM - their success, their happiness, the numbers will always follow. 

And here’s the most important thing…

Sarah walks out that door smiling. She goes home and continues to spread the love with her family and every single person she encounters. Because this sh*t spreads. Being kind. Having empathy. Encouraging others - it catches on like a freaking virus. 

THIS. Is changing the world. 🌎 

One Sarah at a time. 

Because work doesn’t have to freaking suck!

When we do for our people, they do for us. 

I got this text from our Miami Branch Manager this week,

“I just wanted to say thank you. Of my friends group. I am the ONLY dad that was able to go do drop off with the kids first day in a brand new school. The kids had so many emotions going into this big new school not knowing anyone, and it was just SO much smoother because BOTH parents were able to be there for them. I’ve never been able to do that before/ and again to hear from friends that basically said their jobs said they can’t make it - and they were even afraid to ask for the time to be late because “work is hard to come by right now” just makes me appreciate even more what we are doing here.”

The employee / employer relationship is not a damn transaction - not if you want to have a vibrant company culture. 

Your employees will care when you care. 

My kids are super young - Im just now experienceing School Day 1. 

Simply put there are alot of emotions - it helps when we are there. 

Because that’s what being a parent is about - being there. 

And to think employers take this experience away from their employees just to clock another hour. 

It’s disgusting. 

If we want our people to give their all we have to bring our soul to this thing. 

To allow for humanity. 

This is not asking a lot!!

Tap into their souls guys. This is the way to the heart. When work is not just about work but we can rejoice and share this beautiful life together - 

This is excellence!! 

So bring your soul guys. 

You’re people wont forget it!!

An employee cant feel safe at work if they’re apprehensive about what version of their manager they’re going to encounter on any given day. 

If you’re the boss you have to control your moods. 

I was horrible at this when I was young. 

When you’re super passionate about what you do there is an intensity that comes along with it and sometimes it gets the best of you. 

Thats not good for your people. 

It’s impossible to build a great culture with everyone walking on eggshells. 

So when you blow up in the moment. And totally crap the bed delivering criticism or feedback….

APOLOGIZE. 

Look that person straight in the eyes and tell them you’re an absolute bonehead and your emotions got the best of you. 

“Man, I screwed up, I’m sorry.”

Its become virtually non existent in our society. 

Our politicians and business leaders - they don’t apologize. 

Because this world puts way too much emphasis on being right all the time. 

Always trying to save face. Or spin it. 

But here’s the thing - apologizing is REFRESHING. 

It’s honest. It’s real. It’s vulnerable. 

Being a great leader means humanizing. 

Bring yourself down. Understand that you too,  can be idiot sometimes. You too, make boneheaded mistakes. 

So apologize when you do. 

Because we are all craving more freaking authenticity.

I used to get to work at 7am. Then we had 3 kids. 
I take two of them to school every morning. 
So with morning chaos, drop off, and traffic - I get to work now days around 8:30. 

Priorities changed as life changed. 

73% of the workforce has a 2nd job - it’s this little thing called caregiving. 

And whether your on the front end taking care of littles, or the back end taking care of edlerly - it’s taxing. 

I used to be the horrible boss that didn’t get it - 

“What do you mean you can’t get to work right at 8am?”

Then I had kids. Lol 🤦🏻‍♂️

Perspective right? 

As business leaders we gotta remember that our people - LOTS of them are spending 20-30 hours a week in a 2nd job. 

They are still gonna grind. They are still gonna help you hit goals. They still really care about the business. 

It’s just that they may need to leave work early when their kid gets sick. 

And that’s okay. 

Because that’s their life right now. 

So don’t give em grief. Don’t be snarky. 

Just say “of course get outa here, don’t worry about it.”

AND MEAN IT. 

Our best work is done in healthy environments. 

And healthy means leaders who offer GRACE. 😘

Why the heck would we find all these amazing people and then tell them what to do?! 

We need them so they can tell us what to do! 

Your people - THEY are the ones on the front line. 

Meeting your customers, client facing - they are the ones making your product. 

Great cultures view their people as their #1 priority. 

And that means empowering them to go do their thing. 

Incredible work! 

Micromanaging just causes them to disengage! 

Because great people - they want you to coach, mentor, and remove road blocks - AND THEN GET OUT OF THE WAY!!

This business thing - scaling - growing - ITS MULTIPLICATION NOT ADDITION! 

You are a leader when you develop a leader who has developed a leader. 

Coach, train and then let go - let them mess up because they will learn. And get better. And continue the cycle. 

This is the way to grow!! 

And it’s the way to keep your people engaged!!

Our company is 53 years old. In the last 5 years we tripled our revenue. Adding over $30 million. 
We did it building culture. Here’s how we started. 

1️⃣We got all the wrong people off the bus. 

You know all those people who just suck the life out of the room? The glass half empty always complaining type? 

We got rid of them. 

You know the toxic high performers. The big huge ego - demolish everyone in their way - it’s all about me type. 

We got rid of them too. 

Cleaned house. And I’m not talking just kinda. I’m talking maybe 30 people made it from the 110. 

2️⃣ We got the right people on the bus. 

We stopped hiring for experience.

During interviews we turned the resume over. We looked for attitude. Glass half full. Team oriented. Fun to work with. Big eyes. Full hearts. The curious type. The type who loves life and wants to make the most of it. The optimistic type. 

We hired THESE folks. 

We just kept filling up the squad with more of these types. Oh man and boy did it get the juices flowing in the office. 

The different was PALPABLE. You could just feel it. The energy. 

3️⃣ These people - They had to be IN THE RIGHT SEAT! 

We used people analytics. 

Culture index was our obsession. 

We all have inherent traits. We are good at some stuff and terrible at others. For instance, I would make a terrible accountant. I can’t sit still, I’m impatient, and I have zero detail orientation. 

We didn’t want our people to HAVE TO HAVE an out of body experience everyday to do their job. 

So we aligned their ROLE with THEIR INHERANT TRAITS. 

It worked. BLAST OFF. 

This is how you start. 

If there is one piece of advice I can give you guys who are starting to build a culture, or turn around a culture, or start a new business. 

It’s this. 

STRATEGY IS IRRELEVANT WITH THE WRONG PEOPLE. 

So make sure you have the RIGHT ONES. 

And make sure their sitting in the RIGHT SEATS!!

Leaders, your character matters.
Way more than your strategy. 
Here’s WHY? ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Because Strategy is irrelevant without the right people! 

You can have the most amazing strategy ever, but if you don’t have the right people to implement that strategy - you’re toast. 

You gotta FIND THEM! 
You gotta KEEP THEM! 
You gotta INSIPIRE THEM! 

Character INSPIRES. It means:

❤️A leader that is genuine and authentic 
❤️A leader that is open, honest, and truthful 
❤️A leader that is okay with being vulnerable  
❤️A leader that wants to hear your ideas 
❤️A leader that gives you the keys to the car 
❤️A leader that understands life is not just work 
❤️And finally, a leader that cares about your success AT HOME as much as AT WORK❤️

Thats right. They care about THE WHOLE YOU. Not just the results you can deliver!!!

THIS, is character baby! 

And it’s freaking beautiful. 

THIS is the type of leader WE ALL want to run through walls for….

Because they treat us with respect, and LOTS of it. 

They understand WE > ME

Degrees, skills, experience - all this stuff is great but it’s completely useless without character 

Because this thing is CHESS ♟️ not CHECKERS babyyyyyyyy!!!

It’s THE HEART that matters most!!!

Guys I used to be the WORST boss. I was taught that leaders had to be the toughest and strongest, never wrong. A driving force! 🤦🏻‍♂️

I blow through teammates. Ridiculing them for being wrong or making mistakes. 

There was no human connection. Just pushing through fear - making people feel small and dumb and using perfection to motivate. 

I’d fire people on the spot and in front of anyone and everyone just to prove a point. 

When you lead that way, if you have a heart at all, you just feel gross and you know it deep down inside. 

Eventually I got feedback from people I trusted and changed ways. Thank God. 

Leading is about connecting at a deep level with our people. And we can’t connect if we aren’t able to get vulnerable, admit mistakes, and freaking just relax a bit. 

Driving for perfection and stomping out all others is not the way to go. It’s not even fun. Because you are alone. It’s so freaking lonely. 

There’s nothing that compares to achieving alongside a team. Sometimes it takes you breath away. The human side of business. It’s amazing. It’s beautiful. These relationships we can build with one another and the life we can live when we just get real, and vulnerable and open up. 

Man these relationships can last a lifetime. And it’s these relationships that make you better, make you the very best version of yourself. 

Life is so beautiful and work is a big part of that and we must realize we can’t do life or work alone. We need others. Others need us. 

And when we set THIS kind of tone at the office, well, it makes for one amazing space that lifts us up every single day.

We had 4 locations and $15 million 
Now we have 8 locations and $50 million
What gave us the fuel for our growth? ⬇️⬇️⬇️

There are three things that REALLY stick out. 

1️⃣ Core Values / Purpose Driven 

We knew we needed to create profits. That’s obvious to self sustain. But none of us were really got pumped about building a business just for money. 

So over a 3 year period we got really serious about creating our core values and purpose. We knew the best way for big growth was through amazing people. So we had to have an incredible culture. In order to get that culture we had to think differently - this meant hiring based on values instead of experience and resume. Yes those things can be important for sure, but attitude was MOST important. It also meant standing for something other than just profits. If we were going to accomplish anything we would be proud of - we had to do it with a soul. The heart of things mattered. 

Focusing hard on the type of people we wanted to join us on this journey - and then actually finding those people was Fuel ⛽️ #1 

2️⃣ Healthy Work Atmosphere 

There has to be a healthy balance between ambition and mental health. 

Like we absolutely had drive forward and work harder than our competitors. But we also had to make sure we had a clear head space. These two have to work in conjunction - you can drive forward and push hard but you also need to take time off and create some margin. So while we pushed our people harder than ever we also tripled paid holidays off and doubled vacation days. If we were going to demand more we also had to give them more time off. 

Another thing - we had to make sure the bosses were humble. We had all had those big ego a hole bosses and they demotivate. So we really focused on promoting leaders from within our company. Ones we knew had this incredible drive but also an amazing heart for people. And it was genuine. If we were going to build trust we had to promote humility from the bosses. 

3️⃣ We Gave Them The Keys 

We understood that while it might be easier to centralize everything with a few key executives creating all the strategy - it wouldn’t multiply. We needed THEM to be mini executives too. 

So we gave them the keys. This meant we wouldn’t tell them what to do. We would ask them “what do you think we should do?” This subtle, yet very critical shift was empowering. It created autonomy and ambition overflowed - because each one of our 8 locations got to choose their strategy. We decentralized it all. We would just coach. Not tell. They make their goals. They create their budget. They create their strategy. They pick their teammates (as long as they align with values) 

This shift to empowerment - was so powerful. It engaged the entire team. It was THEIR BRANCH. Not ours. And that ownership that came with it was like putting gas on a fire. We exploded. We’ve now got single locations that make more money in a month than our entire company used to make in a year!

My biggest struggle is staying present. There’s this momentum inside always pushing for more. Ambition to achieve something. Anything special that leaves an impact on this world. I don’t know where it comes from or why it’s there but it sits on my soul. 

I’m definitely not alone in this. It exists in all of us. 

But then I look at the smiling faces of Ali and my three little ones. 

It brings me back down. 

It’s like dude what on earth are you so amped up about achieving when you have all this beauty right in front of you. 

What more could you ever want? 

I don’t know. 

I don’t know if I’ll ever ever truly figure it out. 

And I think I just need to be okay with that. 

The push and pull - ambition vs balance. 

The older I get the more I realize my happiness is related to my time spent in the buckets that are most meaningful to me. 

Be GREAT in those buckets and just say no to all the other stuff. 

A few years back I made my personal core values. 

1. Move your body 
2. Ali is #3 
3. You don’t need more 
4. One on One time with friends 

Not so much literal values but maybe more like mantras. I dunno they helped me tho. 

It’s like dude get moving. Go run, get on the peloton, go on a bike ride with Claire, swim. Who knows what bust just SWEAT. Your happier when you do. 

Take care of myself but after that Ali is #1. Nothing works if WE don’t work. This means be here for her. Work can wait most of the time. But our relationship was what started this family and we have to keep that foundation strong. 

More is not better. More money. Better cars. Bigger houses. Better vacations. Nicer clothes. This doesn’t make you any happier. Keep it simple. The best things in life cost no money. 

One on one time with friends. The key here is one on one. Not just “time with friends.” I realized 5 years ago I get nothing from hanging with 15 dudes. There’s no quality. We can’t go deep. I saw no to pretty much everything that involves a big group of dudes. But ask me to lunch? Just me and you? Oh, I’m there 90% of the time. A game with just the two of us? Done✅. Quality convo. This fills my cup! 

The point is this. 

I didn’t know what these values would become when I created them 5 years ago. But I just did it one day - they were sloppy at first and I tweaked them over time - and now I wouldn’t know where my life would be without them. 

They keep me balanced. They keep me centered on what’s most important. They really give me that direction I didn’t know I needed - I was used to just going with the flow. 

I guess what I’m trying to say is maybe look at your own heart - and try to pull out your values or “mantras” - it may really help you get some direction - give you that compass you really need - just like it did me. 

What are the buckets that make you most happy? 

Where does your passion and heart align? 

Those 4/5 things may change your life like they did mine.

Carla’s been here 15 years! Through our transition. “At one time I did hate working here” 😬😬 I love what she says about great bosses:

“Bosses who listen” “Bosses who will eat their L”

A few things on Carla’s comments. 

First, you can always change a culture. No matter how bad it is. All you have to do is start. 

You start by sitting down with your employees and talking with them. Ask them questions - 

“what can we do better?” “Where are we missing the boat?” 

It’s a conversation. A relationship. You build it genuinely and authentically. And over LOTS of time. 

On Bosses:

Humility strikes the tone with Carla’s words. Bosses who realize their job isn’t to be the smartest person in the room. Their job is to build the strongest team. 

Listen to your people because they have tons of great ideas and opinions. We are all in this thing together and we need collective brilliance. 

And bosses who “will eat their L” - I love this. 

Bosses, you will make mistakes. Lots of them. And when you do don’t try and save face or power through it - just be genuine and real about losses and shortcomings. 

It’s human. And it’s refreshing. And we all lose and we all make mistakes. The bosses especially. So own up hold yourself accountable and eat your L. This vulnerability builds trust and you’re gonna need a whole hell of a lot of trust to build a healthy team. 

Love these interviews with our teammates. 

Need to get out and do more of them - unscripted and real and raw. Nothing is more important than learning from our people!

You can’t expect someone to keep giving all of themselves if you put someone alongside them who isn’t willing to do the same….⬇️⬇️⬇️

Morale is a FICKLE little beast. 

And it can rock to either side of the pendulum with just one new employee. 

Hire someone who is optimistic and enthusiastic and who REALLY CARES, and they will inspire others around them to care more and do better! 

Hire someone pessimistic and apathetic, and you punish all the great employees - making them work harder to pick up the slack. 

Reward your amazing people by surrounding them with even more incredible people. 

This means giving as much effort to HIRING as you do your product or service. 

When you’re undermanned, don’t rush the hire to fill the seat. 

You need to be asking yourself on EVERY hire, could this person be top 2 or 3 on the team? 

Maybe they aren’t there yet, but do they have the potential to get there? 

Don’t settle for anything less. 

You cannot burden the people who are achieving. 

Raise the bar. Go for great!

Every hire counts! 

Every hire sends a message!!

Can you get to their hearts? Can you be genuine and authentic enough, filled with enough love and care, to get to their hearts. 

This is leadership. 

It’s not about you. It’s not about the numbers. Or efficiency. Or driving results. 

Those are TRAILING indicators. 

Knowing your people. Truly knowing them. Caring about their well being. Encouraging them to be the best version of themselves. 

Back at home AND at the office. 

THIS, is leadership. 

Being real about your own faults. Knowing that you also suck sometimes. And being real and vulnerable with your people about it. 

THIS, is leadership. 

Waking up every day trying your damn hardest to know it’s your decision to be in a good mood. It’s your decision to live life with a glass half full - optimistic to a fault. 

THIS, is leadership. 

Being kind. Being compassionate. Filled with love. Always thinking “am I being kind” “am I leading with love” - “am I giving this person the benefit of the doubt” 

THIS, is leadership. 

We lead when we are SOULFUL. Tapping into the hearts of people. 

Creating an atmosphere that is so pure that people just want to dwell in it. 

Real. Authentic. Genuine. Kind. Compassionate. Loving. Vulnerable. Honest. Ambitious. Challenging. Good natured. Heart filled. 

SOULFUL. 

Work doesn’t have to be gross. It doesn’t have to be fake. It doesn’t have to be VOID OF SOUL. 

Tap into their hearts my friends. Tap into their hearts. 

Not because of the bottom line but because you just don’t know any other way to be. 

Because it’s right. 

THIS, is leadership.

High- Performing TOXIC employees. 
They wreck HAVOC inside the workplace. 
Yet management looks the other way. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Get rid of these terrorists! 

The collective US and a healthy culture FAR outweighs that one high performer! 

Here’s the thing about toxic employees…

Not only do they bring down the performance of everyone around them….

They cause all the great people leave! 

Because who’s got time for that nonsense!

And when these great employees leave, it costs employers 2x their salary to replace them!🤦🏻‍♂️

So by keeping these toxic employees you:

1️⃣ Lose incredible employees 
2️⃣ Incur more overhead 

Not to mention the time spent frustrated and  undermanned trying to replace great people! 

So im gonna ask you this….

WHY?!?

Is it really worth it?!

A big ego comes at a cost, and that cost is completely demoralizing the team around you. 

Nothing crushes the soul of employees more than the boss that takes all the credit. 

Or the boss that is never wrong. 

Or the boss that makes all decisions go through them. 

Great leaders understand that extraordinary results happen because of magnificent teamwork. 

It’s all about our people - lifting them up - teaching them, empowering them, and letting go - allowing them to make decisions. 

Go! Try things! I’ve done my best in coaching you now it’s your turn. Try. Fail. It’s okay. Who cares. Learn some more. Try again. 

Great leaders just keep empowering and keep encouraging. 

“YOU’VE GOT THIS!!!”

The thing is, there’s alot of people who won’t believe in themselves until someone else does…

Be that boss who believes that OTHERS CAN. 

Optimistic to a fault!! YES THEY CAN!! 

Executive assistant, account manager, saw guy - your job is to BUILD THEM. 

Build them and encourage them - help them be their very best self. 

It’s not about you. It’s about them!! 

When it becomes all about them - you’re on your way to truly building an incredible TEAM!!

We Are Craving More Authenticity in the Workplace.

There’s one thing you can implement right this second to really enhance and build your culture. 
We do it every single weekly leadership meeting. 

We start all our meetings by sharing a personal best from the last week.
