I left a room that welcomed me, and it still felt right.

Don't Get to Comfortable

The older I get, the less I care about fitting in...
because every time I do, I disappear a little more.
 
And I’ve done it more times than I’d like to admit.
We don’t notice it at first.
We sand down the edges.
We say what’s safe.
We start mirroring people we don’t even admire - just to feel accepted.

I’ve found real empathy in leadership doesn’t look kind.

They ask “What if I’m wrong?” constantly.

“If I try and it doesn’t work… maybe I’m not who I thought I was.”      

And that thought?

the person everyone knows you as.      

And deep down, you know:   
Growth means letting that person die. 
     
That’s why it feels so heavy.

You’re not procrastinating.   
You’re grieving a version of yourself that hasn’t even left yet.      

But here’s what no one tells you:      

The person you’re afraid of becoming?   
They’re already inside you.

1. Write down the version of yourself you’re afraid to let go of.

Most rejections aren’t about you. 🤯   
They’re about them.      

That client who ghosted you?   
That pitch that went nowhere?   
That deal you thought was locked in?      

Here’s what’s actually happening behind the scenes:   
→ Their budget just got frozen   
→ A key decision-maker left   
→ Internal politics shifted   
→ They’re scared of looking stupid   
→ The timing is just wrong      

None of that shows up in the “thanks, but no thanks” email.   
So you fill the silence with your worst story about yourself.            

A founder I know lost what seemed like a perfect client last week.   
Proposal was tight. Chemistry was there.   
But ...they went with someone else.      

He spiraled for weeks.      

Six months later, the prospect reached out:   
“Our CFO forced us to go with the safe choice. We regretted it immediately.”      

It wasn’t his work.   
It was their fear.            

Next time someone says no, write this down:   
👉 “This might not be about me.”      

Then wait 48 hours before making it mean anything.      

You’d be surprised how often the real reason has nothing to do with your value.

You’re not being rejected.   
You’re being filtered by someone else’s situation.

They follow checklists.      

Because scripts control what you say.      

Checklists control what you see.      

A script says: “I need to sound confident.”   
A checklist says: “I need to make them feel understood.”      

One is about you performing.   
The other is about them deciding.      

People use scripts when they’re trying to prove themselves.   
They use checklists when they’re trying to understand someone else.      

And that’s why most sales calls feel like interrogation, not connection.

The goal isn’t to sound right.   
It’s to create the conditions where the buyer feels right.      

Great salespeople don’t chase the perfect line.      

They chase trust.            

So if you’re going to use a script, build it around how people decide,  
not how you sell.      

Imagine this:      

A buyer comes to you frustrated. 
They’ve tried three solutions before yours.      

A bad script starts with your features.   
A good one starts with their fear of wasting time again.      

Or this:      

You’re on a discovery call. The buyer goes quiet after you mention price.  

A bad script fills the silence with justification.   
A good one holds the pause and asks, 
“What’s happening in your head right now?”      

A great script isn’t about what you say.      

It’s about what you see and what you choose to ask next.      

Because the best salespeople don’t perform.      

They perceive.

And those quiet moments when things aren't going to plan can feel isolating.

You don't have to be "fine" all the time. 
You just have to be honest - especially with yourself.

Real growth starts with clarity. 
And that includes mental clarity, too.

Maybe today's the day to pause, take a breath, and ask yourself: 
"How am I really doing?"
