“What they hate in you is missing in them.”

Their “criticism” is proof they gave up.

Most people don’t dislike YOUR confidence.
They dislike the fact they lost THEIRS.

They’re not offended by your ambition.
They’re upset because they stopped.
They settled and chose safety, so it’s easier to throw shade at your effort.

And when people throw shade at your progress…
It’s because they’re wasting their chance.

🤦‍♂️ These things are now obvious to me:
-I was an idiot when I was younger.
-You’ll regret not taking chances.
-You should stretch more often.
And:

-People project.
Constantly.
Silently.
Aggressively.
And usually without the self-awareness to realise they’re doing it.

The trick is not to fight it.
Not to blame yourself.
Not to “be less” so someone else feels better.

📌 The trick is to turn it into fuel.

Here’s how you do that without becoming bitter or defensive:

1.	Translate the insult.
Most criticism is coded jealousy. Learn to hear what’s actually being said.

2.	Use it as calibration, not condemnation.
If someone gets triggered by your growth, you’re moving in the right direction!

3.	Detach from the source.
Happy people don’t attack others. If it’s coming from pain, don’t take it personally.

4.	Tighten your circle.
You don’t need fans. You need two or three people who tell the truth and want you to win.

5.	Stay busy building.
Momentum is the best response. Nothing silences doubt like undeniable progress.

None of this is about revenge.
It’s about staying rooted in who you are while others wrestle with who they’re not.

It is not your responsibility to fix an angry person. Move on. 

Keep shining.
Some people will squint.
Some will stare.
A few will step into the light themselves.

99% of your worst decisions?

They came from panic. 

🤯You can’t think clearly when your brain’s on fire.

Anger. Stress. Panic. Shame.
They blur your thinking.
They hijack your decisions.
They cause you to make BIG mistakes.

And the worst part?

You’ll likely defend a bad decision just because you made it emotionally.

Here’s the shift that changed everything for me:

⚠️ Reacting = regret.
⛩️ Responding = respect.

The best founders, leaders, and parents I know all have one thing in common…
They breathe before they act.

Not because they’re slow.
But because they’ve trained themselves to move from logic, not emotion.

Reacting immediately, in anger, in panic, through shame… will just make the situation worse. 

AND you’re giving someone else the control of the situation! 

I used to react quickly and then immediately regret it. 

💥 Next time you’re triggered, by a bad email, a stupid driver, a careless comment, an arrogant boss, try this:

1. Close your eyes. Inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4.
2. 
3. Ask yourself: Will this matter in 5 days? 5 months? 5 years?
4. 
5. Wait 5 minutes before replying, posting, or reacting.
6. 
7. Write the angry version… but don’t send it.
8. 
9. Rewrite it when you’re calm. Then decide if it’s still worth sending.

Calm is a cheat code.
Use it.

And if today feels heavy, step back.
You don’t have to solve everything right now.

You just have to choose peace over panic.
That’s how you make big changes.

Every. Single. Time.

Most people don’t even realise they’re doing it.
They just quietly poison their own life by looking at someone else’s.

The irony?
Your “behind” is someone else’s finish line.

Your leftovers would be a celebration in half the world.

And this line hit harder than it should:

Comparison isn’t unfair.
It’s USELESS.

If you’re reading this on a phone, you’re safe, fed, and still dreaming, you’re already ahead of billions (which is terrible).

So try something that actually works:
• Be kind.
• Be grateful.
• Stay in your lane.

The moment you stop competing with strangers, you actually start living your own life.

1. Compare only to yesterday’s you.
A quiet mind is the real flex.

2. Write down three things you’d fight to keep.
Watch envy evaporate.

3. Give one sincere compliment.
It shifts you from “Who’s ahead?” to “Who can I lift?”

4. Intercept every jealous thought.
Rewrite it into gratitude. Then note one small win.

People around you shape your future more than you do.

The older I get, the more obvious this is:

"Surround yourself with people that push you to do better."

Most people read quotes like this and nod along.
Then they go straight back to the group chat that drags them down a level.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:
Your environment is not “neutral.”
It is either sharpening you or dulling you.

I’ve coached founders who genuinely believe they’re “working hard” while being surrounded by people who spend their days complaining, gossiping, or quietly resenting anyone who tries to grow.

💥 You don’t rise in that environment.
You shrink to fit it.

The highest-performing people I know do something very simple that most people refuse to do:
They curate.
Not in a snobby way.
In a survival way.

They choose people who are ambitious without being insufferable.
Supportive without being clingy.
Honest without being hostile.
Calm, focused, internally motivated.

If your circle drains you, distracts you or makes you feel smaller, it’s not a circle.
It’s a toilet bowl.

Instead:
A. Audit your environment.
B. Trim the noise.
C. Keep the ones who make you better.

1. Notice who leaves you clearer rather than confused.

Here are 5 real mental models that secretly guide your behavior, and how to use them instead of getting used by them:

1. Murphy’s Law
🧠 “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.”
Attributed to aerospace engineer Edward A. Murphy Jr. (1949)

→ Most people over-index on fear.
But the real danger is paralysis from overthinking.
Fear leads to inaction, and inaction then creates the outcome you were worried about. 
✅ Use it: Prepare, don’t panic. Focus on contingency, but not catastrophe.


2. Kidlin’s Law
🧠 “If you can write the problem clearly, you’re halfway to solving it.”
Origin: Circulated in systems thinking and project management circles; exact attribution unknown.

→ Ambiguity kills action. Writing a problem forces clarity.
Most “overwhelm” is just an unprocessed issue in disguise.
✅ Use it: Write it out. Label the problem. Break it down. Half way there. 


3. Gilbert’s Law
🧠 “The biggest problem at work is that no one takes ownership.”
Origin: Often cited in corporate culture; loosely attributed to aerospace exec Bill Gilbert.

→ Success doesn’t come from waiting for the right conditions.
It comes from owning the outcome, even when it’s messy.
✅ Use it: Stop outsourcing your future. Start acting like it’s on you, because it is.


4. Wilson’s Law
 🧠 “The more you focus on intelligence and knowledge, the more likely wealth will follow.”
 Origin: Less formally recognized; likely a modern synthesis of productivity and leverage principles (similar to Naval Ravikant's thinking).

→ Hustle culture is overrated. (I think it's total bullshit in fact).
Leverage, learning, and systems win long term.
✅ Use it: Work smarter. Automate, delegate, and learn relentlessly.


5. Falkland’s Law
🧠 “If it’s not necessary to make a decision, it’s necessary not to make one.”
Origin: From the Falklands War-era British leadership principle. Quoted by military strategist Sir William Slim.

→ Most decisions aren’t urgent. But decision fatigue is real.
Protect your mental bandwidth for what actually matters.
✅ Use it: Delay non-urgent decisions. Act only where impact is clear.


The kicker?
These laws aren’t optional. They’re already at work in your life right now.

I've restarted my life a bunch of times.
After each exit.
After burnout.
After realizing I was building someone else's dream.

Each time, people said I was "throwing it all away."

But you can't throw away growth.

We treat setbacks like they're permanent.
We treat restarts like they're failures.

The CEO who failed three times before this worked.
The coach who burnt out as a consultant first.

They didn't fail.
They iterated.

📌 Your life isn't a one-shot deal.
It's a series of experiments where you get to keep the lessons.

Not because you're weak. 
Because you're aware.

𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗘𝗧 when you drift from your values.
Not because you're lost. 
Because you remember who you are.

𝗥𝗘𝗙𝗢𝗖𝗨𝗦 when the noise gets too loud.
Not because you can't handle it. 
Because you know what actually matters.

Most people are TERRIFIED of starting over because they think it means they've wasted time.

But those "failed" versions of you?
They're not waste.
They're data.

Every restart teaches you:
- What you won't tolerate anymore
- What actually energizes you
- What you're genuinely good at
- What you were just pretending to want

The person who's willing to restart is damn dangerous.
Because they're not attached to a version of themselves that no longer fits.
And they won’t put up with the bullshit.

👉 So if you're sitting there thinking you need permission to begin again:

This is it. Permission granted.

You don't need to explain the pivot.
You don't need to justify the reset.
You don't need anyone's approval to refocus.

Just don't give up on the project.
Because you're the only one you're guaranteed to work with for life.

(Coming from someone who lost it all):

Most people panic when they “don’t know what to pursue.”

If that feels a bit you, I promise you:
You’re not lost.
You’re not behind.
You’re just overdue for an uncomfortable conversation with yourself.

I learned this the hard way.

There was a period of my life where I kept trying to force the next big thing.
The next role.
The next company.
The next clever reinvention.
Hundreds of ideas, all executed badly.

So nothing stuck. (Obviously 🤦‍♂️).

The issue wasn’t opportunity. Or ideas.
It was that I’d quietly abandoned myself in the process.

I had no idea who I was or what I wanted, so I let myself be steered by others. Dumb move from a smart guy. 
It led me to a dark place with people who definitely didn’t have my best interests in mind.

📌 Once I fixed that, (which took a while!) life stopped feeling like guesswork.

So here’s my advice based on some dark, dark times. 

If you don’t know what to chase right now, make the project YOU.

Not the “optimised, high-performance, LinkedIn-ready, everything is perfect”version.
The real one.

The one who needs sleep.
The one who’s been carrying old stress like unpaid rent.
The one who hasn’t checked in with their own wants for years.

Build that person first.

Get healthier.
Get calmer.
Get sharper.
Get present.
Get honest.

Most people try to choose a path while running on fumes.
Then wonder why everything feels so f88king hard. 

When you prioritize the person making the decisions, the decisions become painfully obvious. 

That’s the way to make better choices.
Sort yourself out, and the path reveals itself without the dramatic existential meltdown.
(Do not recommend btw).

Your career isn’t waiting for a strategy.
It’s waiting for you to focus on YOU.

Question for you:
Seriously. What’s something you thought you would have done by now? Why has it not happened.
For me, it’s culinary school.

I’ve worked with plenty of “highly experienced professionals” who were, frankly, liabilities the moment another human entered the room.

Brilliant on paper.
Hopeless in practice.

Because it turns out:

If you can’t treat people well, your experience is just… decoration.

A polished CV means nothing if your behaviour gives everyone the ick.

Let’s be honest:

It doesn’t take talent to bark instructions.
It doesn’t take intelligence to belittle someone.
It doesn’t take leadership to make people nervous around you.

The bar for “treating people decently” is embarrassingly low, yet astonishingly difficult for some to reach.

People will follow a competent leader.
But they will run through fire for a leader who treats them well.

📌 If you want to be taken seriously, not just tolerated, try this:

• Listen without waiting for your turn to speak
A radical concept, apparently.

• Give credit like it’s unlimited (because it is)
You lose nothing by sharing the win.

• Stop assuming pressure justifies poor behaviour
It doesn’t. It just exposes your limits.

• Apologise quicker
You’ll look more competent, not less.

• Notice the quiet people
They often see the mess you’re blindly creating.

Your experience might get you in the door.
Your character decides whether anyone cares you showed up.

Most people are just reacting to problems.

Here’s how the best solve them:

Fast, clean, and with zero drama.

These are the 4 mental models you can turn to every time something breaks:

1. First Principles Thinking
→ Strip it all back. Start at zero.
• What do I actually know for sure?
• What assumptions am I making without realizing?
• If I forgot how this is “usually done,” how would I build it?
• What’s the simplest version of solving this?

2. Second-Order Thinking
→ Zoom out. Think beyond the quick fix.
• What dominoes fall if this works?
• Will this still make sense in 6 months? 2 years?
• Am I solving a symptom or creating a bigger mess later?
• What would someone 10x smarter than me worry about here?

3. Root Cause Analysis
→ Don’t treat symptoms. Kill the root.
• What actually failed — and when?
• What kicked off the chain reaction?
• If I asked “why?” five times… where does it lead?
• Why does this keep happening?

4. The OODA Loop
→ When time is short, clarity matters more than perfection.
• What’s real right now — no ego, no story, just facts?
• What do I need to unlearn to move?
• What’s the smartest next tiny test I can run?
• If I had to act in 10 minutes, what would I do?

Summary:

You don’t need to overthink.
You need to stop reacting emotionally…
And start responding strategically.

The top 1% don’t have fewer problems.
They just have better tools to solve them.

The kid you used to be is still watching.

Make sure not to disappoint them.

At some point, you probably didn’t need advice, a framework or a podcast.
You just needed one person who actually believed in you.

Someone to say:
“You’re not broken.”
“You’re not behind.”
“You’re not too much.”
“You’re not alone.”

But maybe no one did.
Maybe they didn’t know how.
Maybe they were too tired, too busy, or too wrapped up in their own mess.

Unfair? Yes.
But also… useful.

🔥 Because now you’re the adult in the room.
You get to be the one who shows up.
For your kids.
For your team.
For the people who follow you.
And, awkwardly, for yourself.

“Being who you needed when you were younger” isn’t some Pinterest quote.

It’s very simple, very unglamorous behaviour:
Showing up when no one claps.
Resting when the internet screams “more, faster, bigger”.
Leading when your voice shakes and your hands aren’t quite steady.

📌 The loud “legacy” stuff is mostly theatre.
The real legacy is built quietly:
-In how you react when someone makes a small mistake.
-In whether you listen properly or just wait to speak.
-In whether people leave you feeling smaller or bigger.

You don’t need to post your childhood trauma for likes.
You don’t owe the internet a confession.

Here’s the actual work:
1. Think back to one of your hardest moments.
2. Write down the exact sentence you needed to hear.
3. Say that to someone else this week who might need it.

That’s how you change a life, quite possibly your own.

Wisdom is earned…
…by doing something stupid first. 

Most of the “good decisions” I’ve made were only good in hindsight.
At the time, they were panic mixed with guesswork.

Let’s be honest: people talk about good decisions as if they‘ve never messed up.

They have.

Every “right” decision I’ve made sits on top of a small mountain of terrible ones.
The ones I’d never proudly present on a slide.
The ones that taught me faster than any book, mentor, or motivational quote ever has.

We pretend experience is glamorous.
It isn’t.
It’s earned the same way a toddler learns not to touch a hot stove, painfully, loudly, and hopefully only once.

😏 And that’s the part most people avoid.

They want certainty without risk.
Progress without discomfort.
Insight without impact.
Basically, they want the cheat codes without playing the level.

But if you strip it back, the formula is embarrassingly simple:

• Make the decision.
• If it goes well, repeat.
• If it doesn’t, congratulations, you’ve just become slightly less foolish.
• Apply lesson.
• Move on with dignity (or whatever dignity remains).

Your future good judgment will be built from exactly this:
👉 A long series of attempts you thought were perfectly reasonable at the time.

So don’t fear the wrong decisions.
Fear being the person who never makes any.

After 3 exits, here's the mental health toolkit every founder needs but no one talks about.

Because therapy isn't enough when your brain's on fire at 2am.

I've built and sold three companies.
Each one nearly broke me in different ways. 
The fourth one actually did. 
- The first taught me panic.
- The second taught me burnout.
- The third taught me trust & boundaries.
- The fourth made me take a year off.

Nobody prepares you for the mental tax of entrepreneurship.
They sell you the dream, not the 3am anxiety attacks.

So after years of expensive mistakes and harder lessons, here's 5 starter lessons that actually work (follow Charlie Lass for more of them): 

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝗻-𝗡𝗲𝗴𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝘃𝗲:

1. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 10-𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁
Before emails, before coffee, before anything.
Write three sentences: How I feel. What I need. What I'll do today.
Sounds soft? It's tactical. You can't lead if you don't know your own state.

👉 When you’re low energy, ease off; when you’ve got the gas, punch it.

2. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗡𝗼" 𝗾𝘂𝗼𝘁𝗮
Three "no's" per week minimum.
To meetings, to "quick calls," to opportunities that sound good but feel wrong.
Your sanity is worth more than being liked.

3. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝘂𝘁𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹
Pick a time. Close the laptop. Walk away.
Your business problems will still exist tomorrow.
But you won't if you keep grinding yourself to dust.

👉 The to-do list will always be there!

4. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿
Not a mentor. Not an investor. 
Someone who'll tell you when you're being an idiot.
Mine's saved me from at least six terrible decisions.

👉 Holds a mirror to your choices.

5. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝘁
Weights, runs, boxing - doesn't matter.
What matters: something that forces you out of your head and into your body.
Daily. Non-negotiable. Even when you're "too busy."

👉 You’ll see improvement across every part of your life.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵:

Most founders treat their mental health like a luxury.
It's not.
It's how your business runs.
It’s your operating system.

You wouldn't run your company on a corrupted hard drive.
Stop running yourself on one.

Your team doesn't need a hero.
They need a human who knows their limits and respects them.

You are not who you used to be. 

But people from your past don’t know it yet:

I avoid certain people who “knew” the old me.

Not because I’m embarrassed or hold a grudge, but because some are still arguing with a ghost.

Years ago, someone told me I was:
“too intense,”
“too distracted,”
“too ambitious for my own good.”

Fair enough.
At the time, they weren’t wrong.

But last month I bumped into one of them again.
Same street. Same coffee shop.
Completely different version of me.

We talked politely.
They kept referencing old flaws like they were still current events. Trying to mask an insult as a joke.
Meanwhile I stood there thinking:

“I have outgrown every single thing you’re describing. Including you.”

And it hit me:

📌 Most people don’t remember you.
They remember their experience of a former VERSION of you.
A version you haven’t been for years.

You evolve.
They freeze-frame.

You rebuild.
They keep the old file.

You do the work.
They hold the outdated opinion.

So here’s what I learned, painfully, but usefully:

👉 You don’t owe the past version of yourself to anyone.
And you definitely don’t owe anyone an explanation for your growth.

If you’re trying to change your life,
your habits,
your career,
your identity…

You’re already miles ahead of anyone who still thinks you’re stuck where they left you.

Your growth isn’t just real.
It’s visible to everyone who’s actually looking.

⚠️ Four things you can do this week to reinforce that growth:

✅ Stop entertaining old narratives.
When someone brings up the “you” from five years ago, don’t defend it. Let it die.

✅ Let your actions update the record.
Consistency makes people adjust faster than explanations.

✅ Spend more time around people who see who you’re becoming, not who you were.

✅ Give yourself credit.
Growth feels slow from the inside, but from the outside it’s obvious.
