I was first asked to lecture while still attending MIT, a first for the Institute, and teaching to my own peers was one of the more anxiety inducing moments of my career. Huge fun though.

I've mentored groups of highly intelligence, ambitious and amazing business minds, most of whom have not experienced the rollercoaster of startup life and entrepreneurship. Getting highly capable C Suite executives to think like startup founders with limited resources was eye-opening for everyone.

The Humble Entrepreneur - Founder Coach - MIT Lecturer With 3 Exits - Follow for Startup, Mental Health & Self Improvement

I taught entrepreneurship at MIT.

My failures were their lessons:

Teaching frameworks and lessons to 200 brilliant MIT students, peers, and people way more experienced than me…

While carrying a secret that would make them question everything I said.

My forth startup didn't just fail.
It spectacularly imploded.

Not because the market wasn't ready.
Not because we ran out of funding.
But because I ignored every principle I now teach.

🤦‍♂️ I made mistakes.
I chased growth over sustainability.
I prioritized metrics over mental health.
I built a team on faith, not trust.
I confused busy with progress.

The irony?
I was teaching "sustainable entrepreneurship" while burning through my own life at an unsustainable rate.

Here's what that $2M crater taught me:

PROCESS MATTER MORE THAN ANYTHING.

→ Success without wellbeing is just delayed failure
You can't build something lasting while you're falling apart.

→ The best strategy can't fix broken culture
I had the right playbook. Wrong foundation.

→ Ego is expensive
Mine cost me relationships, health, and eventually the company.

→ Your blind spots will find you
What you refuse to see becomes what takes you down.

→ Failure is data, not destiny
But only if you're brave enough to study it.

In 2022, after the breakdown that followed, I made a choice:
Stop teaching theory.
Start teaching truth.

📌 Now when I stand in front of classrooms, leaders, (ballers!), I don't just share what works.
-I share what breaks.
-I share hurts.
-I share what costs more than money.

Because the people who'll change the world don't need another success story.

They need someone who'll tell them:

Your mental health is your first KPI.
Your character is your competitive advantage.
Your failures are your real curriculum.

Truth is: I'm a better teacher because I failed.
And they're better founders because I'm honest about it.

The textbooks teach you how to build a company.
Your failures teach you how to build yourself.

You're following 5 laws without knowing it,

But they're not laws of nature...

They are laws of thinking...

You weren’t taught them, but they’re shaping your life anyway.
Let’s change that:

Here are 5 real mental models that secretly guide your behavior, and how to use them instead of getting used by them:

1. Murphy’s Law
🧠 “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.”
Attributed to aerospace engineer Edward A. Murphy Jr. (1949)

→ Most people over-index on fear.
But the real danger is paralysis from overthinking.
Fear leads to inaction, and inaction then creates the outcome you were worried about. 
✅ Use it: Prepare, don’t panic. Focus on contingency, but not catastrophe.


2. Kidlin’s Law
🧠 “If you can write the problem clearly, you’re halfway to solving it.”
Origin: Circulated in systems thinking and project management circles; exact attribution unknown.

→ Ambiguity kills action. Writing a problem forces clarity.
Most “overwhelm” is just an unprocessed issue in disguise.
✅ Use it: Write it out. Label the problem. Break it down. Half way there. 


3. Gilbert’s Law
🧠 “The biggest problem at work is that no one takes ownership.”
Origin: Often cited in corporate culture; loosely attributed to aerospace exec Bill Gilbert.

→ Success doesn’t come from waiting for the right conditions.
It comes from owning the outcome, even when it’s messy.
✅ Use it: Stop outsourcing your future. Start acting like it’s on you, because it is.


4. Wilson’s Law
 🧠 “The more you focus on intelligence and knowledge, the more likely wealth will follow.”
 Origin: Less formally recognized; likely a modern synthesis of productivity and leverage principles (similar to Naval Ravikant's thinking).

→ Hustle culture is overrated. (I think it's total bullshit in fact).
Leverage, learning, and systems win long term.
✅ Use it: Work smarter. Automate, delegate, and learn relentlessly.


5. Falkland’s Law
🧠 “If it’s not necessary to make a decision, it’s necessary not to make one.”
Origin: From the Falklands War-era British leadership principle. Quoted by military strategist Sir William Slim.

→ Most decisions aren’t urgent. But decision fatigue is real.
Protect your mental bandwidth for what actually matters.
✅ Use it: Delay non-urgent decisions. Act only where impact is clear.


The kicker?
These laws aren’t optional. They’re already at work in your life right now.
But when you understand them, you can make use of them.

Nobody is coming to save you.

And that’s the best thing that’ll ever happen.

Most people don’t fail because they’re not smart.
They fail because they wait.

They wait for the right time.
For their idea to be perfect.
For the right investor.
For the right “sign.”

But the right time never shows up, ever.

YOU just decide one day that now is good enough.

I used to wait too.
I thought my talent would be spotted.
That effort would be rewarded.
That someone would open the door.

Then I learned:
No one’s watching that closely.
And even if they were, they’re busy with themselves.

What changed everything was this model:

🟡 Belief: In myself, even when I didn’t feel ready. (especially then in fact).

🟡 Consistency: Not bursts of motivation, but small daily action.

🟡 Responsibility: Realizing it’s my job to move, not theirs to notice.

That’s when momentum started to build.
Quietly at first. 
Then all at once.

Remember:

✔ They aren’t coming to save you
✔ No one is really watching
✔ Anyone who judges you is projecting
✔ If you don’t believe, no one else will
✔ “Good enough” is good enough 

So do this right now:

1️⃣ Write down 3 things you’ve been avoiding.
The one that scares you most? That’s the one that’ll move you forward.

2️⃣ Set a 25-minute timer.
Don’t overthink it. Start.

3️⃣ Do it, send the email, make the call, post the thing.

4️⃣ Reflect for 5 minutes.
Notice how the fear fades once you act.

That’s all building a business ever is:
a thousand moments of courage that nobody sees.

You don’t need a lifeboat.
You can build the ship yourself.

7 Dangerous Lies About Success 
Learned from 3 exits and a breakdown...

My early image of "success" was totally wrong. 
I was sold 7 lies and I believed every single one. 

Here they are, avoid them at all costs:

1. Money = Safety
So I chased it.
Built. Sold. Rebuilt.
Ignored the anxiety, kept pushing. Stupid. 

2. Growth = Happiness
I thought MORE would fill the void.
More users. More revenue. More milestones.
But I was just running in circles like a hamster.

3. Hustle = Worth
I wore burnout like a badge.
As if sleep was weakness.
As if exhaustion proved I was serious. Very stupid.

4. Titles = Identity
“Founder.” “CEO.” “Exit.”
But the truth? My title wasn’t who I was.
I was afraid of not being enough. 

5. Control = Freedom
I thought being my own boss meant freedom.
It didn’t. I became the harshest boss I ever had.
And I never let myself switch off. 

6. Validation = Value
Press mentions. Panels. Praise.
I confused applause with peace.
They are NOT the same.

7. Winning = Fulfillment
This one hurt the most.
Because I kept winning.
And I kept feeling empty.

In 2022, it all came crashing down.
Not in public.
Not on LinkedIn.
But in silence. Alone.

A total breakdown. Couldn't function. 
Sleepless nights, panic attacks, dark thoughts, self-isolation. 

That was the real price of believing that crap.

Here’s what I believe now:
• Money helps. Of course it does. But peace is the real wealth.
• Growth is good. But direction matters more.
• Rest is a strategy, not a reward.
• You are not your LinkedIn bio.
• Control is a myth. Flexibility is power.
• You don’t need applause to matter.
• Success is internal. And it starts with honesty.

If you’re chasing someone else’s version of success,
Pause.
Ask who wrote that script.
And whether you respect them.
