How Vercel turns thousands of developer conversations into product decisions  

Listening to the community, engaging with users, and acting on feedback has always been part of Vercel’s DNA.

Across Reddit, X, Hacker News, and GitHub, developers mention Vercel thousands of times every day.

That’s a huge advantage and a real challenge.

The team wanted every PM and engineer to hear what the community was saying, not just the most online people. 

But keeping up manually was impossible, and valuable insights risked being missed.

That’s when Guillermo Rauch, Vercel’s CEO, discovered Octolens on X.

What started as a pilot quickly scaled to over 20 Vercel teams.

Today, each product area, Domains, Turbo, CI/CD, Pricing, and more, has its own “firehose” Slack channel.

Octolens feeds in community posts automatically, filtered by AI to remove noise. When someone shares feedback or reports a bug, teams act quickly.

As Brian Emerick, Technical Product Manager at Vercel, put it:

“At Vercel, community sentiment is as important as enterprise feedback or usage data. If Reddit or X tells us we’re misaligned, that’s enough for us to make a move.”

Since launching Octolens, I’ve learned the hardest part of social listening isn’t finding mentions, it’s getting alerts for the right ones.

You want high-signal posts in your inbox about your brand, competitors, and industry. Not noise. That’s been our focus since day one.

We just shipped a new update in Octolens to make that even better: Keyword context.

You can add context yourself or let us auto-suggest it for you.

Examples: 

- I might track “Google Alerts” as a competitor, but I don’t want generic posts about people’s Google alerts.
- I might track "Devin" and want to reinforce I only want posts related to AI and coding (not people called Devin). 

Octolens now takes into account your company context and this extra keyword context to fine-tune relevance.

This means fewer irrelevant posts and more conversations that actually matter to your business.

It’s easy to share the business highlight reel, but what people actually learn from are the hard moments.

Noah Kagan just kicked off an “AppSumo is at War” podcast series where he openly talks about current challenges in the business and what he’s doing to turn things around over the next 18 months.

I found out because he mentioned Octolens as one of the tools helping him reconnect with his community. Routing feedback from places like Reddit to their internal Slack.

Doubling down on your customers, listening, and engaging directly (especially as a founder!) can be one of the most powerful ways to refocus on what matters.

Fun fact: shortly before starting Octolens, I discovered Noah through the Tim Ferriss podcast and read his book. So it’s pretty surreal to now get an Octolens alert about him mentioning Octolens on his own podcast 😄

✨ Just dropped a new update in Octolens.

We now auto-suggest negative terms for your tracked keywords.

If your brand or competitor name is also a common word (think Linear, Lovable, Notion), you might burn through mentions that aren’t actually about you.

Our AI already filters out the noise in your alerts, but this update helps prevent irrelevant posts from using up your mention credits in the first place.

A small but powerful quality-of-life improvement.

These are the 3 biggest mistakes I see SaaS founders and growth teams make on Reddit, and how to fix them:

❌ Hiding the fact you’re the founder/employee

Fix: People value transparency, especially on Reddit. Not stating who you are will backfire pretty quickly. 

❌ Posting raw AI-generated answers

Fix: Always use your own voice and perspective. At most use AI to edit. It takes longer, but it will have more impact. 

❌ Only tracking your brand name

Fix: You should track your brand, but if you want to use Reddit for growth you also need to go broader. Track competitor names and pain point keywords - that’s where you can often stand out to answer questions, provide value, and mention your product IF it makes sense. 

Reddit isn’t purely about volume. It’s about establishing yourself as a trustworthy and helpful community member. 

A handful of thoughtful contributions will get you much further than hundreds of generic ones.

Social is one of the best feedback loops you can get.

Every week, I go through my Octolens AI brand summary to make sure I didn’t miss anything important, especially helpful feedback.

It includes highlights, lowlights, and citations for every mention. A quick rewind for me to see how people talked about us that week.

This week for example:
- A new customer said Octolens helps them reply faster - something we should emphasize more.
- Another suggested adding RSS and event stream monitoring - noted.

Social listening isn’t just about tracking mentions. It’s about actually turning feedback into product decisions.
