I was a VP but I felt like an outsider. I was a creative in tech. A South African in Germany. A full-time leader of a big global team and the primary parent of three school-age children. Someone going through perimenopause while in the biggest gig of my career. A woman knocking - possibly too politely - on the glass ceiling, saying 'I'm ready for more.' An introvert attending up to 12 meetings a day. A writer in a job that involved mostly speaking. Underslept because I was getting up at 4am to write a novel. I believe outsiders make the best managers and probably the best leaders. We understand obstacles and through this we develop empathy. But power can't be ignored. And the system is bigger than all of us. I've written a book called We Need New Leaders that helps emerging leaders from diverse backgrounds and of diverse identities - the outsiders - land, keep or create their dream leadership roles using the skills of reputation management.
