SURROUND SOUND I was raised in a home filled with creative people (my folks were some combination of art director/designer/painter/illustrator/writer). I was lucky for a million reasons. We made art and we talked and wrote about arty things. As if my parents weren’t enough inspiration, many of their artist friends would come over. Some of them were also cartoonists and novelists and educators. One guy had a greeting card business. They would come for a meal or a laugh (always a laugh) but stay and talk. Talk about art, typography, shows. They’d also talk about dessert and baseball because man can’t live by Picasso alone. And, until it was past my mother’s idea of my bedtime, I would sit around and soak it all in. The lesson I learned? Surround yourself with creative people who have a POV and a good eye and ear and, even better, an expansive imagination. The company you keep will be astounding.
