Before I became a founder, I didn’t understand why startups raised so much (but I was happy to enjoy the tech for free 🙈)

But now that I’m on the other side, I get it and honestly, it’s one of those things that’s hard to grasp until you’re in it.

So let me break it down using our current pre-seed raise for Socella.

We’re raising $500k for 12 months of runway, which is the cost of running the business for a year without touching revenue or profits.

That runway lets us do things like:

1. Launch a free tier to give users a taste of the tech before they commit.

2. Go from MVP to a full product launch.

3. Spend more on marketing.

4. Hire support staff to manage the new traffic. 

5. Focusing on shipping instead of money.

Raising now is a win-win.
Customers get a stronger, more reliable product, and we get to build a more sustainable business.

For our business, the starting capital is $500k.
For others, it might be more.
Either way, founders are more likely to underestimate how much they actually need than overestimate it at this stage.

Here’s the new playbook smart entrepreneurs are using in 2025:

Step 1: 

Pick a space you’re genuinely interested in and/or knowledgeable about. The broader the better.

Step 2:

Build an audience. Share insights, stories, and experiments. People follow people who make them think or feel something.

Step 3:

Listen like a spy. The questions your audience asks are free market research. Write them down. Whatever they respond to the most, that’s your product.

Step 4:

Introduce your product. By then, it doesn’t feel like selling. You’re just providing a solution your audience already seeks.

This strategy works with all kinds of businesses, and social media is the best place to start building your audience. 

In 2025, attention is the seed. Your product is just the fruit. So start planting today. 🌱

Bottom-up economics is good but wealth-building will save Nigeria.
