When I first got into marketing 10 years ago, I would do everything.

This wasn't when I was a freelancer or running my own agency – this was everything I was in charge of for a "Media Buyer" role 😅

I took photoshop and web design in college, so I didn't have an issue with it. And I honestly had a lot of fun doing the creative development.

But for the past ~4 years, I started working with designers to execute my creative strategy. It just took too much time for me to develop the things I envisioned, and although I "liked" photoshop, I was by no means an expert. 

Fast forward...

With all the AI and editing tools available now, I have jumped back into developing things on my own. 🙂

I'm sure it could still use a "designer's touch" – but our conversion rates have been stronger than ever 💪

I haven’t posted a lot over the past 2 weeks. 

My impression count will probably tank for the next 1-2 weeks.

But I don’t care. 🤷

I’ve been focusing on more important things.

🔥 Sourcing a product for our own DTC company
🔥 1 client away from “reaching capacity”
🔥 Making more revenue and executing more projects than we ever have

Whenever we get new clients, I spend 90% of any extra time focusing on them, to ensure they start off with us on the right foot. 

Improving SOMETHING that first month is critical to a good long-term relationship. 

And if my LinkedIn impressions tank because of it? 

So what. 

I do love making content for LinkedIn. 

But my clients' priorities mean more than my self-interests.

A simple question about an "irrational fear" that ended up being the centerpiece for a script I wrote in film school

...

I'm currently watching Motion's creative summit, and the first session is about how to be a top 1% creative strategist. 

What have I learned? 

Nobody really knows what to look for. 

The reason why I love content and developing scripts? I'm passionate about storytelling. 

I love subconscious psychology, 

turning boring information into something exciting, 

and creating a character for a brand to lean into. 

In one of my scriptwriting classes, I was given a character sheet with 50+ detailed questions...

The question I always remember? 

"What is your character's irrational fear?"

At the time, I thought this was a silly detail that would never come up again. So almost jokingly, I wrote down "spork"

Once I got into my script, there was a moment this character was at the kitchen table with his roommates. 

I needed something that would show his character immediately. He was a strong, superhero type man, and giving him a monologue about his fear of sporks ended up being the funniest thing in the entire script. 

Why? 

Because it's a detail that goes beyond "surface level." It's something deep rooted in the character's archetype, and one monologue showed everyone what the character is all about. And that even superman can have some silly fears. 

And that's why I'm so great at developing creative. 

I don't just like going beyond the surface level stuff like "Attention XYZ demographic"...

I love it. ❤️

It's something I don't even have to think about. It comes natural to me. 

THAT's what you need to look for in a great creative strategist...

Not someone who...

❌ Can analyze data extremely well
❌ Ran Meta ads for 10 years 
❌ Has worked with really big brands

What you need is someone who understands storytelling. Someone who LOVES finding ways to communicate boring information in a creative way. Someone who just gets it.

When working with clients, you have to accept that you can't solve every problem pre-sale.

And I'm not talking about their funnel...

I'm talking about client relationships. 

We've never had a problem closing clients,

But I've been trying to think of ways to "prep" clients for our services better...

The issue? 

I'm trying to solve a problem that can't be fixed. 

Don't get me wrong...

There is plenty you can do pre-sale to get clients to understand your methods, 

But no matter what you do...

Questions will always come up. 

And frankly...

Dealing with client pushback has never been an issue for us. 

I was trying to perfect things by putting more content into our sales deck, 

But I was losing what kept our sales process so natural, and so refreshing. 

I'm going back to the simple method that has worked so well for us:

🔥 3-page deck. 1 slide about the team, 1 slide about our logo, 1 slide about pricing. 
🔥 Google doc outlining the strategy 
🔥 Asking questions instead of talking to people on the call

Answering every question before it comes up isn't the goal...

It's about creating a relationship that tells the client "we are different." 

If you do that, everything else becomes easier. 

You are going to get questions, 

You are going to get pushback, 

You are going to get hesitation at some point or another...

But if they trust you? 

Dealing with all of that is easy.

And once you accept that, you start focusing on what really matters...

The way you work and communicate with people.

It's not about eliminating issues...

It's about how you react to them.

People are capable of incredible things. 

You just need to believe it’s possible.

When was the last time you completed something after saying, “I can’t do this.”

If there’s anything at all, I bet that number is incredibly small.

People are their own worst enemy.

Constantly doubting themselves,

Or listening to others opinions of what they are capable of…

“You aren’t good enough to do that.”

“You aren’t strong enough.”

“You aren’t smart enough.”

“Play it safe.”

Whether it’s external or internal…

Phrases like these kill motivation. 

The next time you don’t think someone in your life can do something. 

Tell them they can.

The next time you don’t think YOU can do something.

Try harder and push through that feeling.

Great things don’t come easily.

But that doesn’t mean they aren’t possible.

The most successful people in this world aren’t that much more capable than everyone else…

They just believe in themselves to do what others won’t.

You only get one chance to live the life you dreamed of.

Don’t waste it by accepting only what you “can” do.

Be willing to battle through discomfort to do what you “can’t.”

You might just surprise yourself.
