Agile questions, part 8 - I really want to understand Agile.  I keep feeling that I have missed the point somehow, and I honestly do want to get it, so please help me with this if you can.  Question 8 - does Agile have any way of handling dependencies, i.e. that feeling of "Damn, we should have already done THAT before we reached this point!" e.g. we should have ordered up that long-lead time part before today, when we need it.  How do you remember to do things in the right order?  Do you just do this in your heads?  Do you  know, because  you've done similar projects before?  How often do things get forgotten?  Do you have a way to reduce the frequency of stuff getting forgotten?  Please let me know in the comments.....

This is an interesting video - https://lnkd.in/eXFh8gHj  I was hooked by the "six types" but actually the second half is the best bit - how watches affect the wearer's psychology just like the clothes you wear, as well as affecting other people's perception of you.  e.g. what do you think about someone who doesn't wear a watch at all??

here are my notes from the video - let me know what YOU think!

People wearing watches arrived 5 minutes earlier to appointments on average than those who don't.
Not wearing a watch at all - implies you don't feel that time is important
Using your phone to check time easily leads to distraction
at 8:52 - Wearing a quality watch: rated 23% more competent (not richer, more competent)
The effect of the clothes you wear on how you behave seems undisputable, (I feel very different if I wear a tie!) and a watch is part of that.
When you wear a dive watch you take more risks.
Choosing a 'tool watch' like a dive watch means - "I want to feel ready for anything"
at 11:40 - my favourite watch, and I think he's right - I hadn't thought about it before but I do want to feel I can handle whatever the day throws at me. I don't relate to dress watches at all, and I don't want to have to slow down. So he might be right!
Negotiation - mechanical watch-wearers negotiated better outcomes. (although: was it the type of wearer who chose it, the effect on the wearer, or the effect on the other party?)
I like the idea of each morning: "Who are you choosing to be?
PS. I don't think I'm any of his six categories though. Did you feel a connection to one of them?

Here's an extract from today's "Life Coaching" message. (I have signed up for my own course, to see how it feels, and so far it's fun!).   

(I put LC in inverted commas because it's not a conventional coaching programme in terms of 1:1 discussions, it's a steady stream of useful ideas for a whole year, aimed at achieving the same thing - helping people to become more successful and happier in their lives: their jobs, their careers, and their personal lives).

Anyway, here's about 25% of today's message:

"If someone asks you to do something that is going to take a reasonable chunk of your time, something that you don’t really enjoy or which isn’t going to give you any benefit at all, you have three options.

1 – Say no. We’ve talked about this a lot, it’s a great choice. But sometimes it’s a bit rude or unhelpful. After all, you’re supposed to be a nice person and a team player, (as well as having your own agenda that you’re working on).

2 – Reluctantly say ‘Yes OK’ and then say goodbye to a chunk of your time. It’s an option, for example if it’s really going to delight a customer, and you do reap what you sow, so sometimes it’s OK. But too often and your life is being stolen by other people in order to achieve THEIR goals at the price of yours, which is not OK.

3 – The forgotten option, which is to negotiate. You can negotiate over when you do it, how long you spend on it, whether you just do part of it and they to the rest, whether they help you to do it, whether they do something else in exchange, whether you are allowed to delegate some of it to other people, whether they pay you for it, where you do it (working from home, they come to you etc) – there are so many options!

I’m not suggesting you negotiate over EVERYTHING, but just every now and then it’s a great option.  

Particularly when you find yourself thinking reluctantly “Oh OK then I’ll do it”, or when you feel that saying No is a bit too unhelpful but you don’t want to say Yes, it should switch on your negotiating light…

For example, with interruptions, you don’t want to say yes, and you can’t really say no, but you CAN negotiate over when you deal with them, and you can also negotiate over how long you spend on them. And you can do this with EVERYTHING else that comes along, not just interruptions.

Negotiating is similar to saying no, because it’s a kind of partial no. If you think about your day as a box, with lots of stuff – mostly unimportant stuff - coming in, and also lots of stuff getting done, and maybe you’re just keeping up or maybe the box is filling up more and more, these two options, saying no and negotiating, are about letting less in. These two options are your best ‘first line of defence’.

And for bosses and customers, where saying No is often not an option, negotiating is probably your best option.
