Herald & Times Group

My main responsibility within the Herald & Times Group was the continual maintenance and enhancement of the 4 Herald & Times Group websites (Herald Scotland, Evening Times, The Scottish Farmer & Scottish Horse) and their associated products and services, such as the HeraldScotland android and iOS apps, the Herald Scotland paywall and a number of internal reporting systems.

In additional to my responsibilities on the news sites I am also involved in the development and maintenance of the websites for the commercial platforms (Scotlands Homes, Herald Drive & Times Out). 

My involvement on all of the projects spans from project planning & scoping through to code development, optimisation & mentoring.

I do the odd development project out with the normal working day and these projects are usually for smaller personal clients or for jobs where I want to learn more of a particular skill or technology.

The main project I have been involved in was a rebuild of an e-commerce website using Magento which involved importing the existing product data from the database for the old website into Magento, building the Magento theme based on the look and feel of the old website and creating a custom payment and shipping modules.  Whilst the new website was being built I also had to maintain the existing website and resolve several issues during the interm.

I also provide hosting for a couple of clients on a cloud-based Linux webserver.

My main responsibility within Line Digital is to provide robust solutions for new websites and provide on-going maintenance for both new and existing websites.  In addition to this I am also responsible for:-

- Implementing SEO recommendations to increase performance in search engine ranking.
- Providing timescales, estimates, feedback and progress reports
- Providing assistance to other members of the team

I was also involved as part of a process review team tasked with looking at the processes in place and providing feedback from my team about what processes were not working and putting forward suggestions on how these could be improved.

My main role within Alienation Digital was to review and document the existing Alienation Fort product with a view to:-

- Identifying and documenting the main processes within the system
- Optimising the database structure
- Building a new version in a PHP Framework (Symfony)

Design2Host Ltd

Design2Host Ltd was my own company and as such a number of the clients I worked for were clients with my previous roles.  As a result, a lot of the work I preformed was also the same as my previous roles.

I continued to develop the Avian project management system and added several new features as well as maintaining and refined other aspects of the system.  Most of this work was done remotely but I also performed onsite visits for more complex tasks.

I performed regular data mining tasks, the result of which, for one particular client, was used for quick access to reports regularly asked for by managers.  This automated the process, made it more accurate and freed up days of time which valuable staff lost doing this process manually.

I also provided IT support for Windows workstations, servers, network infrastructure, POS terminals and telephone communications.

Avian Communications Ltd

My main role within Avian was to build and maintain websites using Avian's in-house CMS system.  This would involve taking the PSD file produced by the design department, creating the necessary HTML templates and assets through to implementing the functional logic and backend using ASP (Classic), MS Access & MSSQL.

As well as building websites using Avian's in-house CMS system, I was largely involved with developing an internal project management system with many features which are found in a number of project management systems today including being able to manage projects, tasks, users, time sheets, holiday requests and document management.

My secondary role was to provide IT support (both remote and on-site) for Windows networks with and without domain controllers (Windows 2000/2003) for a number of clients.

I also was the lead developer in building a stadium capacity monitoring system (using hardware and software from http://www.opto22.com) which was linked to the stadium turnstyle system.
