Hello, all! Grady here. Many of us recognize the seminal moments in our lives that have shaped our professional success - and dare I say The Thunderbroom is the foundation of mine. For those of you that don’t know, The Thunderboom is what legendary punk rock musician Mike Watt (Minutemen, fIREHOSE, Banyan, J. Mascis & The Fog, Iggy Pop & The Stooges) calls his bass guitar - an instrument I fell in love with at 15 years of age in the winter of 1986. At a (relatively unknown at the time) Red Hot Chili Peppers show at The Ritz Theatre in downtown Austin, Texas - it’s worth mentioning. Picking up this low-end anchor of an instrument led to the joining of many bands - which is where I learned how to actively listen, practice with discipline, and collaborate & create with others. After college in suburban Chicago (Go U Northwestern! - I think we won half a dozen football games during my four years there?), I had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to turn pro - which led to 16 years on the road, playing thousands of live shows with various artists all over the world. And life as a perpetual guest taught me about patience, grace, the kindness of strangers, and the deepest appreciation for little things like clean hot showers, comfortable firm beds and aisle seats. Marriage and raising kids was the catalyst to a professional pivot, where I found myself building programs & raising money for educational and humanitarian non-profits in Houston. Even became a lay youth pastor while I was at it. The most emotionally and spiritually satisfying work that I’ve ever done, undoubtedly, and I credit the hustle and toughness that I cultivated in the music business as the foundation of my success. For the last several years, I have worked in ERP and FP&A software partnerships & sales - both leading & being led, and alongside some of the kindest, smartest, roll-up-your-sleeves types of individuals I’ve met in my lifetime. And all of my success in this realm can be credited to my days fundraising - which is one of the best ways to learn sales skills.
