Most leaders talk like heroes. The best ones speak like teammates.

At the Governors Awards, Tom Cruise spent most of his speech thanking grips, camera operators, and crew members most people never see.

His words: "Cinema is built by communities, by craftsmen, by artists who pass knowledge hand to hand, set to set, generation to generation."

That wasn’t modesty, it was intentional leadership.

Language doesn’t just describe culture. It creates it.

Leaders who default to "we" build teams rooted in shared ownership. They signal that contributions matter, that success and failure are collective.

Leaders who default to "I", even unintentionally, position themselves as the hero and the team as the supporting cast.

When you make that shift, team members stop waiting for permission and start proposing solutions. They lean into problems instead of deflecting them up the chain.

The difference shows up in everyday moments.

"I launched this initiative" → "We built this together"

"I solved the problem" → "The team cracked it"

"I'm proud of what I accomplished" → "I'm proud of what we accomplished"

Your challenge: Audit the last three emails or messages you sent to your team.

Count the "I"s and the "we"s.

The last 31 days don't drain you. They reveal you.

Most leaders are already mentally checked out. Coasting to the finish line. Telling themselves they'll reset in January.

I used to do the same thing.

A few years ago in Toronto, I hit mid-November completely burned out.

Cold, dark, heavy. I'd just closed a brutal quarter filled with team changes and endless decisions.

My instinct was to survive until December 31st and deal with everything afterwards.

Then I caught myself saying "I'll handle that in the new year" for the third time in a week.

I wasn't tired from the work. I was tired from the patterns I'd been tolerating all year:

• Overthinking small decisions
• Carrying other people's emotional load
• Saying yes too quickly
• Avoiding one hard conversation
• Stretching myself thin to appear "on top of it"

Year-end doesn't just expose your workload. It exposes your patterns.

So I made a different choice. I didn't launch anything new or build a massive plan. I chose to reset one pattern.

That single shift created more clarity and momentum in 39 days than the previous 11 months combined.

Here's what I learned: Year-end isn't a slowdown. It's a window. A leverage point. A pattern-breaking moment if you choose it.

The leaders who grow right now aren't the ones doing more. They're the ones sharpening a single behaviour that changes everything:

Say no faster.

Decide sooner.

Stop rescuing people.

Close one open loop.

Protect 60 minutes daily for deep work.

Have the overdue conversation.

Pick one. Repeat it for 31 days.
