As someone who used to live off £1 frozen pizzas to save money, I feel like I have authority to say this — even though I know some people will strongly disagree.

This came to mind because I’m sitting in one of the relaxation rooms in the complex where I live.

I was thinking back to a few years ago, when I was renting some of the cheapest flats I could find in London — paying £600, £700 a month.

At the time, I genuinely believed that people who spent £2,000, £3,000, £4,000 a month on rent — or even £10,000 a month — were foolish.

I thought they were doing it to show off. That it was money down the drain.

But the reality couldn’t be further from the truth.

If you have the means to do it, I highly encourage you to invest in where you live.

It is the most influential investment I have ever made in my life.

And I’ll say this clearly: there is no virtue in not upgrading where you live, whatever the reason you might be telling yourself.

Now, am I saying you need to live in the penthouse in The Shard or the Burj Khalifa?

Obviously not.

But if you can move from a mediocre place — somewhere you don’t feel calm, at peace, or abundant — into a space that actually supports you, then do it.

That might mean a building with a gym. A private spa. A sauna. A pool. A quiet place to think.

Because when you put yourself in a better environment, there’s a shift.

-Your ability to make better long-term decisions improves. -Your critical thinking sharpens. -You show up to work more composed. -You're more measured on sales calls. -You're grounded when negotiating business deals.

And as a by-product of being in an environment where you’re more grounded, more level-headed, and more present — every other area of your life starts to improve.

And again, I say all of this as someone who used to buy dozens of £1 frozen pizzas from Sainsbury’s every month just to get by, save money, and afford rent.

There is no better asset to invest in than yourself.

And very often, that investment starts with where you live.

This time last year, I spent 200 hours across 3 weeks in Asia doing nothing but yoga, meditation, and breathwork.

It was intense.

I didn’t do it to escape work — I did it to understand myself better and bring that clarity back into my career.

Out of all 200 hours, the biggest takeaway wasn’t a technique or a practice, but this.

Stress and burnout don’t come from responsibility — they come from a lack of awareness in the moment.

Awareness is what interrupts autopilot.

Without it, stress becomes your default.

The panic from checking your stock portfolio too often is no different to 99% of the thoughts you have during the day.

Short-term market fluctuations. Noise.

You don’t let small dips and spikes dictate long-term decisions.

Yet we let every mental rise and fall trigger an internal reaction.

Too many reactions = stress, frustration and tension.

Treat your mind the way good investors treat markets.

It’s Friday morning.

And odds are you want to switch off this weekend.

But switching off doesn’t work if your mind is still running in the background.

Think of it like your work laptop.

You can shut the lid, but if 20 tabs are still open, the system hasn’t actually stopped processing.

The screen might be down — but the battery is still being drained.

And that’s what most weekends look like.

You’re not working, yet your mind is still:

- Rethinking a decision that’s already been made.

- Replaying a meeting you wish you’d handled differently.

- Mentally preparing for emails that haven’t arrived yet.

You’re not working. But as far as your body is concerned, you may as well be.

Switching off isn’t about closing the laptop.

It’s about clearing what’s still running.

When the background noise quiets down, the stress fades away and your energy comes back. 

You don’t return to work on Monday refreshed by accident.

You go back refreshed because the mental tabs were finally closed and the system could reset.

Constantly feeling burnt out?

Consider this before trying another fix:

At some point, burnout can stop being something you experience and start becoming part of how you see yourself.

You identity as being “a burnt out person”.

When that happens, anything you do to feel calmer only works on the surface.

Real change starts when you shift how you relate to stress.

When you break your identification with it.

(I’ve shared something in the comments that can help with this if you want a practical place to start.)

If intrusive thoughts are causing stress in your life, do this the next time a negative thought comes into your head. 

The more you do this, the less stress you’ll feel over time.

I used to think I HAD to be stressed.

That it was a prerequisite for career progress..

That if I wasn’t stressed, I clearly wasn’t trying hard enough.

Bizarre.

It’s like saying the price of success is enjoying your life less.

Because that’s exactly what happens when you identify with the stress of your career.

All it really meant was I’d confused constant tension with growth.

Funnily enough, letting go of that mindset is when my career actually started to move in the direction I wanted.
