WHY ME

Over the past decade, I’ve coached and trained thousands of professionals globally to attract and advance the opportunities they want, be it in the form of new roles or leadership promotions.

I started my career headhunting top talent across Asia Pacific. I saw quickly that the people who got the “yes” did not always have the fanciest degrees. They had the intangibles: a clear, memorable personal brand, a strong network and the confidence and communication skills to show their value.

Bringing out those intangibles in my candidates was the best part of my job, so I became a career coach and corporate trainer. 🚨New year, new scam on LinkedIn

I had just hit post this morning when a “LinkedIn security” comment appeared under my post minutes after it went live.

It looked official (see screenshot)

It said my post violated policy and my account might be deactivated permanently.

And it hits a very real fear for many of us:

👉 “What if my account gets taken down?”

I clicked 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

It took me to what looked like a LinkedIn page… but it wasn’t.

If you click on Verify your identity, it leads to a phishing page designed to steal passwords. 

That’s how they hack into your accounts.

🚩 What to look out for

❌ Links that are NOT linkedin.com
❌ Threats like “immediate deactivation”
❌ Accounts called “LinkedIn security” with 0 followers
❌ Urgent / fear-based language
❌ Claim they represent LinkedIn in the comments 

If you see this appear under your posts:

1. Don’t click
2. Report the comment 

If you DID click and entered your password, do this immediately:

1. Change your LinkedIn password

2. Check that no new email was added:
Settings → Account preferences → Email addresses
👉 Remove any email you don’t recognise

3. Check who’s logged into your account and sign them out:
Settings → Sign in & security → Where you’re signed in
👉 End any session that isn’t you
(“Sign out of all sessions” if unsure)

4. Turn on two-step verification:
Settings → Sign in & security → Two-step verification

5. Take other necessary steps to secure your device such as running a scan 

Scammers are getting smarter, and they know active LinkedIn users care about protecting their accounts.

I just wrapped up a series of presentation skills workshops at NUS Business School 

These Masters students were 💯 engaged.

From me and Shamane Tan's recent viral posts, I’d say it’s NOT copying what’s already working on the feed.

But trying new things that are seldom on our feed.

🔊"You have to get out of your comfort zone to find opportunities. Not knowing anybody is not an excuse."

That was an NTU student's takeaway after attending my talk on using LinkedIn to maximise career fair opportunities.

From my years recruiting at career fairs, I offered insights on what makes or breaks first impressions.

Here's a snippet of what we covered that could change your job search:

BEFORE the career fair:

• Your LinkedIn profile is your first impression, not your handshake
• Make sure you have a professional photo and banner(it’s like your billboard)
• Research companies through your alumni network

DURING the fair:

• Prepare a genuine 30-second intro, not a pitch
• Make it a conversation and ask them questions
• Scan their QR code to connect on LinkedIn right there

AFTER the fair (where most people fail):

• Follow up within 1-2 days or they'll forget you
• Engage with the content from the people you met to stay visible
• It takes 5-12 touch points to gain someone's attention

Another student told me: "I feel way more confident going into the career fair now."

One student changed his banner and profile photo right after the session.

That's how you win: learn, apply and repeat 😁

😳Let people praise you and not from your own mouths.

Heard all these before?

Some of us (especially if you're Asian) were taught:
- don’t self-promote
- don’t ‘show off’
- let your work speak for itself

But LinkedIn can’t read your mind… only your signals.

If you want to be seen, trusted, chosen, you need to share your work.

I wrote a 3-min article with a simple test + templates you can plug and play to share(not brag) about your next milestone or win.

And understanding why changes how you think about career success.

The 4 LinkedIn Personas:

🦚 Peacock — Builds visibility, creates buzz, attracts attention
🦅 Eagle — Drives decisions, closes deals, leads change
🦉 Owl — Establishes expertise, earns respect, influences with insight
🕊️ Dove — Builds trust, creates loyalty, turns connections into relationships

Most people never figure out which one opens doors for them.

Vibey pauses before posting, thinks before responding and notices what others miss.

That looks like Owl energy.

And it is. That's his secondary mode (yes you usually have 1 or 2 modes!)

But what drives his career growth isn't analysis.

It's relationships.

He doesn't study people to spot patterns.

He observes them because he genuinely wants to help.

He feels terrible when he has to cancel on events last minute (see previous #VibeyTales)

Worries about what people will think when he hits post.

That's Dove energy.

And it's why people reach out to him when opportunities come up.

Partnerships. Speaking gigs. Projects. Referrals.

They don't go to the loudest person in the room.

They go to the person they trust.

You know what's cool? While we typically favor one bird persona (aka our preferred communication style) and lead with it, we can activate all 4 bird modes depending on which goal is important for you.

Peacocks get attention. Eagles get respect. Owls get credibility.

But Doves get the relationship.

A YouTube channel for Gen Zs asked me to myth-bust recruiters. 

So I told them what students don't hear until they've been rejected 50 times.

1️⃣Recruiters don't always read your resume.

Sometimes they skip the pile entirely and go straight to LinkedIn to headhunt. Your profile matters more than you think.

2️⃣Your digital footprint could flip a positive hiring decision.

Make sure what appears online reflects well on you (these days with AI search, they can dig up anything from your past)

3️⃣Interviews aren't Q&A sessions.

They're story auditions. If you can't structure your answers well, you'll lose their attention and be forgettable. Aim to be memorable.

For anyone applying to internships or grad roles in 2026, this is the difference between: "Thanks for applying" and an interview invite.

I also broke down the ABC approach to make LinkedIn work without bragging, my 3Vs method for interviews, and why "it's harder for fresh grads these days to find a job" is true but not a dead end.

3. Run a deep-dive career audit with your favourite LLM(ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot etc)

Here's a simple prompt to get started: 

Act as an experienced career coach. I’ll paste/upload my resume here.

First, read it and briefly summarise:
my core strengths and transferable skills
the main themes you see in my work (problems I solve, environments I’m in, people I work with) the impact I seem to create most often. Then, guide me through a reflection in 3 stages. Ask one question at a time and wait for my answer before continuing.

Stage 1 – Now: Ask 3–5 questions about what energises vs drains me in my current role, and which tasks feel most meaningful.

Stage 2 – Hidden strengths: Ask 3–5 questions to uncover strengths, interests or achievements my resume underplays or leaves out.

Stage 3 – Next steps in my current role: Ask 3–5 questions to help me spot realistic changes or experiments I could try in the next 6–12 months without quitting (tasks to do more/less of, skills to deepen, new responsibilities to propose).

Finally, brainstorm at least 5 possible career directions that are future proofed (they can be within or outside my field), plus 3 practical next steps I can take to start exploring what's next for my career.

At 19, in my first paid job, I didn’t thrive.

I was teaching English at a secondary school while waiting for uni to start.

One day, the class went berserk with chalk flying around and kids running wild no matter how hard I tried to manage them.

A psychologist was sitting at the back observing the class because I had a special needs student in the room.

I was trying to look competent while having an internal meltdown.

I didn’t ask for help because I thought I had to figure it out alone.

I cried in front of my class, walked out and skipped work the next day 🤦‍♀️

Today, I shared that story with teenage youths about to start their first internships.

🚀Tips I wish I knew back then: 

- If you’re stuck for more than 30 minutes, ask (what I tried+where I’m stuck+question) 

- It’s ok to make mistakes as long as you learn like a sponge 

- Check your AI output and edit when you’re using AI for work (it’s not always right!)  

- Build relationships and stay in touch (LinkedIn is a great place to do that) 

- Don’t say you’re ‘just’ an intern or only hang out with fellow interns
