Have you ever played ‘Guess Who’? The game where you have all the people in front of you and you have to ask questions of your opponent to find out what person they've got on their card. Quite a simple game, but have you tried playing it with a young child? I’ve found they will quite often give you the wrong answer; you say “do they wear glasses?”, they say “no”, you put down all your people who don't wear glasses... and it turns out that they do wear glasses so you couldn't possibly have guessed the right person! Another thing I've noticed they do is – when it’s their turn to ask questions - they might ask about things that are irrelevant and you can't even answer, like “Does this person like cheese?” When we think about getting to know our customers or colleagues, it can be similar to that game of Guess Who. We have lots of questions and answers when it comes, and we need to have the correct answers, and it’s also key to make sure we’re asking relevant questions. I don’t believe we are always asking the right questions, or getting the right answers, and I want to help improve the situation. I'm Clare Paterson, a specialist in data in social housing. For over 25 years I've worked in quality assurance, risk management, and data management and I combine and draw on all that expertise in my work as a data strategist specialising in social housing, and a champion of data protection professionals. My experiences of working in and with landlords led to writing my first book; 'A Practical Guide to Data Protection in Social Housing' published by Law Brief Publishing.
