Since 2014, the Stork and Dove offerings have grown to include a variety of clean label products (gluten-free, corn-free, fenugreek-free, soy-free, preservative & non-gmo) that are nutritionally balanced, function-focused, and delicious!

I went for a walk yesterday evening down a well known busy retail street in Toronto.  I was struck by one thing: the significant number of retail stores closed down. I’ve lived through several recessions but the size of this retail wasteland on Main Street in Canada is new. It’s a direct result of so many factors that have impacted a small business owners ability to stay in business. It started with Covid, the impact on supply chain and costs of goods, then came inflation and the cost of borrowing and hiring. Then came rent adjustments and peoples shopping behaviours shifting and the impact of inflation on consumer spending. It’s been hit after hit after hit. And finally, and of critical importance, is the inability in this market to obtain capital to simply survive and then grow when things settle down. I’ve spoken about this before but it’s a huge problem, not a small one. We will see more and more large retailers, who can weather the challenges of the markets I’ve named above, claiming the retail ground. Which means less choice, less competive pricing and less availability for consumers.  Small biz in Canada can’t survive without real and meaningful help backed by consumer demand, funders of all kinds and more favourable government policies. It’s beyond worrisome on every level.
