A remarkable cross-institution study (Berkeley, Stanford, Harvard) just delivered the clearest evidence yet: gender gaps in generative AI adoption are 𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘭.

Across 18 studies, 143,000 people, and hundreds of millions of platform users, women consistently lag behind men in AI use.

If left unchecked, this will not just mirror inequality, it will 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯 it into the next generation of AI systems.


My top 6 insights from the study:

● 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗜 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗿, lowering barriers to skills, productivity, and opportunity for those historically excluded from access and networks.

● 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗽 𝘀𝗵𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀, showing that expertise, exposure, and confidence are powerful levers of change.

● 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗴𝗮𝗽 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, it’s an economic growth multiplier, with hundreds of billions in productivity at stake if inclusion lags.

● 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗽: social norms, institutional barriers, and cultural perceptions (e.g., AI use seen as “cheating”) keep women sidelined.

● 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗶𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹: underrepresentation today means tomorrow’s AI learns on male-skewed data, making future tools less inclusive by design.

● 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹: women are more likely to disengage when tools fail, while men persist and iterate, creating compounding effects.
