After a life changing event in 2021, I decided it was time to do my own thing. 

I spent 17 years working in and leading Contact Centers around the world, and now I help Leaders, Business owners and Organizations with their leadership so they can turn their teams into profitable rockstars through Effective Leadership.

I help Leaders recognise the stories they tell themselves, help them overcome their challenges and get to grips with their own aspirations, which allows them to create habits that sees them execute their commitments. 

I do this mainly on a one-on-one basis, however I also do group training.

At TTB I had the opportunity of heading up the very new and inexperienced sales and service department globally. The company was and still is on a massive growth trajectory. When I joined the team we were servicing customers in four different continents all remotely due to COVID.

This made me very excited, to be able to mould, challenge and develop a team from almost scratch.

Not being in an office was new to me, in fact I was not even on the same continent as my entire team, however I was still able to follow the same methods that had brought me success before. 

And that is knowing that as a leader you only get things done through others, so the more I was able to include people in the plan, the culture and my way of doing things, the more success I would have. Any leaders silver bullet, is in fact their people and if you want to eventually receive discretionary effort from anyone, you need to work with the people. 

The role did test me, as I had never been in a start-up environment before, I very quickly realised that although my role was department head, I would be responsible for every tiny detail, which I thoroughly enjoyed and it took me back to my early career days. 

I wrote sales scripts for calls and webchat, created QA forms and processes, trained new agents, listened to 100's of calls, spoke to customers, created training material, created brand new sales teams, designed KPI's, wrote marketing copy, tested websites and trained new leaders, you name it.

A very new experience for me being in a start-up environment, which helped me keep me ego at the door. Because no matter your experience and title, things had to get done while the business was in this massive growth state. 

It meant working long hours, working weekends, taking call after hours and becoming a jack of all trades. 

All things I knew had to be done, because of the where the company was, and I made sure my team knew we were all in it together.

Global Customer Service and Sales Lead

Wow, what an experience, being recruited to work in the Caribbean for one of the worlds leading holiday brands. 

Hands down the friendliest people I have ever met, the Grenadians. 

I stepped into a powerful sales environment and was accountable for 85 agents and leaders and overall responsibility for 150+ staff.

My first objective was to jump in and build solid foundations with everyone, why, because how can you expect others to rally behind you if they are not comfortable around you and there is no trust. 

My first port of call was to create an environment where people felt they were part of something bigger than themselves. A place they felt valued and where their contributions mattered. So I implemented a site-wide staff representative team who were responsible for communicating the "Game Plan" to their teams. This immediately made people feel heard. 

I recognised that between the multiple offices scattered across multiple islands, there was division and we were working in silos. I introduced gamification and team tournaments to increase the communication between the islands and also create a sense of "we're all in the same boat together". 

Supported and Developed current leadership team through coaching and how to be the best versions of themselves. By overcoming challenges, getting to grips with aspirations and creating habits that saw them execute their commitments. 

I helped the leaders realise the immense opportunity they have to change peoples lives, and played an important role in their success and development.

Call Centre Manager 

The next stop for me was Ops Manager, a position I loved and was very proud to be in. 

During this time the industry went through a tough spell, conventional timeshare was not as popular as it used to be with all the new players in the market like Booking.com and AirBnb making things more flexible and easy. 

So we inevitably went through a number of re-structures, a tough time to be a leader. 

But, I had already spent a number of years in leadership at this awesome company, which means I had spent many years building solid foundations with the teams and leaders that reported to me. 

This meant that people knew exactly why I was a leader, what my intentions were. Believe it or not this made even delivering bad news easier, because their was trust and people understood were the news was coming from. 

During this period I managed to have the entire operation rally behind a common cause, my team leaders believed in our approach and together we continued to create an environment that felt like a family. 

When I left this business after 14 amazing years, the entire business shut down for 2 hrs to have a surprise farewell for me, and the contact centre staff sang traditional african songs thanking me and wishing me a prosperous journey.  

I cried like a baby, learning that I made even the smallest positive impact on anyone was more than I could ask for. 

Here's the nitty gritty's of what I achieved. 

• Led 150+ sales team across Contact Centre operations, inbound and outbound sales and customer engagement 
• Drove multi-million rand sales, through implementing efficiencies across teams that achieved an unprecedented number of consecutive months where sales targets were achieved. 
• Instilled a culture across Operations where teams and leaders felt valued, and rallied behind a common cause , through continuous engagement my team scored 92% on Great Places to Work, an increase from 70% previous year.

Sales Operations Manager

I applied to become the Senior Team Leader and was delighted to be offered the position after quite a strenuous panel interview and presentation process. 

The other candidates were super strong and to be honest, any of them would have done an amazing job. 

Luckily for me, becoming the boss to my buddies, was made easier by the experience and guidance I received from my Director and now mentor, even almost 20 years later.  

I learnt very quickly, that if you value people, if you share the game plan with them and value their contributions, if you use belonging cues in everything you do, and you work hard on establishing solid foundations between yourself and your team. 

The team members, will find joy in what they do, be more satisfied with their role and for that reason enjoy it more. They will look forward to work and naturally excel at it too, it's a no brainer really. 

And as a leader, this costs you nothing, when people know there is a leader out there who values them, trusts them and sees in them something they want to nurture and develop, they will give that extra. 

Doing the basics as leader's right, sets the tone for everything else. 

> I was curious about my team leaders, showing an interest and getting to know them, gaining insights on how I could develop and challenge them. 
> Gaining insights on how I can drive that motivation within them, the intrinsic motivation. 
> Meeting regularly and giving feedback, telling the truth 
> Allow team members to be themselves. 
> Involving team members in decision making, getting their buy-in and building trust
> Actively asking for feedback, making sure I am supporting them as best I can. 

These are a few of the things I did to build an environment where in the end we all thrive.

Senior Team Leader

I started my leadership journey relatively early into my career. I was very fortunate to be recognized early on after gaining a reputation as I strong performer on the phones while also displaying some leadership qualities. 

During my time as Sales Team Leader, I successfully managed sales and customer service teams, driving performance and revenue to achieve personal, team and company goals. 

Additionally, I developed and implemented processes including a sales sheet to ensure that all clients were contacted appropriately and enabled a more strategic approach. 

I drove customer service standards, coached and mentored sales consultants to deliver great customer service focusing on member satisfaction and retention. 

I also proactively drove motivation across the teams, encouraged self-belief and development and utilised motivation tools specific to individuals and teams. 

My team was a specialist team within the company, and my proudest moment was being able to create an environment where every individual felt they were part of something bigger than themselves, they felt valued and had the autonomy to try things and be themselves. 

As a result, we broke records as a team, surpassing the previous standards of what was thought possible.

Sales Team Lead

Nobody puts their hand up in school and says "I want to work in a contact centre one day", yet so many of us end up in one. I sure did, I saw it as a stepping stone to my "real career" and it was a job that required you to have no experience whatsoever. 

What happened next, I ended up spending 17 years in contact centres around the world. 

I absolutely used and abused the time as an agent to learn as much as possible, I became comfortable with the uncomfortable and acquired a whole bunch of skills I have used everyday since.

> I learnt how to be resilient and how to adapt. 
> I learnt how to sell by building relationships with customers in a very short time so that they trusted me. 
> I learnt how to deal with sales pressure and targets. 
> And how to control the controllables. 

I could not control that someone would answer the phone, I could not control what the next campaign would be, I could not control what my target would be, but what I could control, was how amazing I was going to be when a customer answered their phone and how I was going to blow them away with my service delivery, sale or no sale, my aim was to make their day a little bit more special. 

So in a nutshell, I learnt bucket loads being on the phones and that experience shaped me into the leader I became and who I am today.
