As I was amongst the first professional seller on the platform at the age of 17, I joined the EU Enterprise Team and the wider eBay Team to turn this strategy into business results both in France and in the UK.

My first startup experience was with Moodstocks - building machine learning for computer vision. The company went on to get acquired by Google. I never lost my passion for building AI products since then.

This isn’t a goal of ours because we have plenty of money in the bank but quite excited to see that Hugging Face is profitable these days, with 220 team members and most of our platform being free (like model hosting) and open-source for the community!

Especially noteworthy at a time when most AI startups wouldn’t survive a year or two without VC money. Great job team!

Pumped to announce the brand new open LLM leaderboard. We burned 300 H100 days to re-run new evaluations like MMLU-pro for all major open LLMs!

Some learning:
- Qwen 72B is the king and Chinese open models are dominating overall
- Previous evaluations have become too easy for recent models, much like grading high school students on middle school problems
- There are indications that AI builders have started to focus on the main evaluations too much at the expense of model performances on other ones
- Bigger is not always smarter

Really excited about how the field is maturing on evaluation, let's go!

In my experience, the accuracy gap between open-source and proprietary is negligible now and open-source is cheaper, faster, more customizable & sustainable for companies! 

No excuse anymore not to become an AI builder based on open-source AI (vs outsourcing to APIs)!

Just crossed 8 years at HF. Based on my experience, these are the five most important factors of longevity for startup founders:

#1 Amazing cofounders & team (for me: crazy smart, kind & driven - Julien Chaumond & Thomas Wolf)
#2 Personal value alignement with your startup (for me: open & collaborative )
#3 Exciting topic (for me: AI)
#4 Supportive investors (for me: financially bullish, hands-off & don’t add up to the pressure/struggle)
#5 Balance between work & personal life not to burn out and grow in other dimensions of your life too

In general, my biggest realization is that it’s really important to really focus on building the startup & teams you’re excited to lead instead of the one you think you have to build or that others are telling you to build.

Matthew Honnibal & Ines Montani are both forces of nature and massive benefactors of the open-source AI community so I can't wait to see what they'll build in the coming years. 

Also, it's a great practical example of how collaboration > competition in AI: Spacy & HF/transformers were kind of competitive libraries early on and we both decided to collaborate instead of competing for the benefit of the open-source AI community IMO.
