Throughout my career, I've had a few side hustles. Initially, it was a means to support my family and gain additional skills. 

Over time, I've come to appreciate how these ventures have not only helped financially but also contributed to my professional growth, enriching my full-time roles.

In June 2022, I embarked on a new journey with partners who shared a similar vision. Together, we brought life to what was once just a "side gig." 

We built Commonstate - a marketing agency with 3 core values:

While I still maintain a part-time commitment to Commonstate, it has become much more than just a side hustle. It's a passion project - a manifestation of our collective values and aspirations for our families' futures.

Commonstate isn't your typical marketing agency. Spencer Bradshaw and I, having experienced the cutthroat nature of the agency world, vowed to create something better. No non-competes, no intimidation tactics towards employees, no holding client assets hostage. These are the principles we stand by.

Despite our humble beginnings, we've seen remarkable growth through word of mouth and referrals. Our commitment to delivering on promises has resulted in zero customer loss to date (though we know churn is inevitable). 

But we're not stopping there. We want Commonstate to flourish while staying true to our core values.

It’s becoming more apparent to me as I get older that marketing is my specialty, but not my identity. 

It’s easy for us to get wrapped up in our roles and careers, and think that we need to live and breathe our vocation. 

For me, there are far more things that I’m passionate about than marketing. 

That’s not to say that I don’t take marketing seriously. But, the truth is, there are things outside of marketing that I love, which I truly believe make me a halfway-decent marketer.

Things like:

For me, it’s always been a mission to be better in every aspect of my life, daily. 

It’s the same way I approach marketing. 

Sometimes, my marketing approach is not to consume marketing books, 14 podcasts, and 27 blog posts in a week.

It’s probably more along the lines of listening to an Exit Five or My First Million podcast while I do dishes, play drums on my lunch break, or watch Peppa Pig with my kids early in the mornings.

So, let’s all take a deep breath and stop stressing ourselves out so much.

I'm currently in my 4th month with ZenMaid. 

It's surreal in many ways; honestly, it feels like I've been here for a year already (in all the best ways). 

So, how are things going? I wanted to share some key metrics and strategies that might resonate with some other CMOs, Demand Gen leaders, etc.

These are the high-level KPIs we're monitoring as a marketing organization:

Current MRR trends
✔ February over January: +2.4% MRR increase
✔ March over February: +1.04% increase
✔ April: trending +1.84% increase 

(A +1% or +2% may not seem like a lot, but this includes downgrades, and churn, and represents our NET MRR growth. In other words, 1% - 2% growth on a 6-figure MRR company is solid growth, which compounds over time.)

Here are some other supporting stats, including product trials:
✔ February over January: +9% increase
✔ March over February: +1.53% increase
✔ April over March: trending at a +7.23% increase

On the marketing side, the things I'm most excited about currently are:

📈 Paid media efficiency. Our CPL (trials) is hovering around $100 - $150 across all channels; our ACV is slightly less than that, which means we have to be more cautious than enterprise-level SaaS companies. Our payback period is < 3 months, which feels sustainable. 

📈 Content marketing. We're pushing out a lot of content lately, including more video, and written content, and experimenting with more podcasts. Our content includes not only our own sourced content, but we're partnering with a growing list of industry leaders, influencers, and current customers to bring more authority and credibility to our content. 

📈 We're adding more talent. We're currently hiring for another part-time video editor and web developer, so our output is increasing at the same time as our efficiency and MRR growth.

TL:DR - we're having a blast if you can't tell.

Demand Generation can be a blessing and a curse. 

You see, there’s been a bit of a disconnect for me lately.

I’ve struggled with being the “demand generation” guy. It’s been that way for a couple of years now. 

You see, demand generation has a different meaning to anyone you ask.

Sometimes, it’s tofu growth; the “affinity” building concept. 

Other times, it’s viewed as more of a demand capture / lead generation approach.

It’s often led to a misunderstanding of what I do; but more importantly, it’s such a broad topic, that it pushes people to SILO what I do.

It’s not a bad thing to be known for something, but I've reached a pivotal point in my career. 

I don’t *just want to be known for demand generation. I want to be known for:

Marketing, holistically

Leadership

Operations

Growth

Problem-solving

Ideation

Collaboration

I don’t have the answers, yet. But, I’m on a mission to branch out.

Who else struggles with this?

Having the opportunity to join my local chamber, the Greater Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce with Commonstate is a dream come true.

To many, it may not seem like a big deal. But, I used to come to Chamber events on behalf of other companies. I'd have to report back with business cards to justify going during work hours. 

Now, having the ability to get involved in the community on my terms feels so natural, and it's something I've daydreamed about my entire career.

The truth is, if you pay for cheap input, you’ll get cheap output.
