I developed and operated large scale parallel and distributed streaming analytics systems for one of the world's largest gaming analytics platforms serving over 350 million monthly active users, 6000+ games, and up to 5 billion events per day. I developed machine learning systems for churn prediction, and lead the design and implementation of a user segmentation system built on top of Redshift. I optimized an Erlang HyperLogLog implementation in C resulting in reduced operational costs. I rearchitected parts of the proprietary streaming analytics system written in Erlang to improve reliability and performance. I improved and simplified operational processes and metrics. The services were built upon AWS using a variety of technologies including Erlang, Python, Clojure, DynamoDB, EMR, MapReduce, Spark, Redshift, Hive, Redis, Graphite, Papertrail, Pingdom, and Fabric

I developed and operated a proprietary distributed in memory time series database, that is used for analytics, marketing, personalization, and paywalls for most major German news media companies which rank in the Alexa top 250. I focussed on improving reliability, scalability and performance of the database, while working on replication, sharding, and distributed transactions using C++ and ZeroMQ. I analyzed traffic and developed a bot detection system, rearranged long term persistence to assist recovery, and improved user classification performance by over 60 times. New features were released frequently and there was never any down time or crashes due to excellent fault tolerant design, testing, and operations

I completed a summer internship at Google. I worked on the Google Gears project that influenced many features in HTML5. I designed and implemented file system integration, marshalling of objects between C++ and JavaScript, and integration of BLOB storage into the SQLite database API. The local storage API influenced and directed the HTML5 local storage API

The Mineral Liberation Analyzer was acquired by the FEI hardware company who manufactures the microscopes

I developed world class software for the mining industry in C++ where I designed and developed new features for the Mineral Liberation Analyzer. It analyzes the crystal structure of mineral samples using Scanning Electron Microscopes. I was the primary developer of the new DataView 3.0 package that calculates statistical reports from the raw information gathered from the microscopes. It is used by extensively in industry by metallurgists and geologists. DataView 3.0 was seen as a vast improvement in usability and processing speed. I improved classification speed of signals from microscopes by over 2 times. Furthermore, I designed and developed many other new systems including a new binary storage format for data acquisition and analysis, and a data mining system for storing and analyzing large numbers of samples. I was promoted to software process lead after 5 months and assisted the group on introducing new tools and techniques to improve productivity

I have over 20 years experience as a machine learning engineer, distributed systems engineer, software engineer, data scientist, and network engineer. I have worked in the technology, internet, insurance, finance, mining, news media, mobile gaming, educational video distribution, computer hardware distribution, and education industries delivering high impact products that solve real customer needs using the latest and most advanced technologies.

I was awarded a doctorate in computer science in the areas of machine learning and information retrieval resulting in 12 peer reviewed publications with over 300 citations. Many of these publications were in the highest ranked conferences in the field such as CIKM, SIGIR, and WWW. My thesis was nominated for an outstanding thesis award
