I’m a blue-collar woman wrapped in a PhD package. Many would say that what qualifies me to stand in front of audiences and speak on mental health in the workplace, is because I've weathered the challenges of two family-owned construction businesses – sheet metal (parents) and industrial roofing (husband). Others would argue that it’s my 25 year tenure as an Organizational Health Leader coupled with a published, peer reviewed author on workplace culture and health behavior policy. My friends and family would double down that it’s because I walk the talk when it comes to health and well-being. My response? It’s each one of these, and my story. A story that involves learning at age 13 that work can be at the root of anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts and suicide. But that in order to protect yourself from the mistreatment of others, especially at work, you must never tell anyone that you’re struggling mentally. A story that, because of these learnings, coupled with my own negative workplace experiences I, an expert in the health and well-being industry, who puts my physical health first, found myself at a crossroad where suicide was an option. To this day, I’m uncomfortable sharing it. Because I still believe I’ll be looked at differently; that it will impede my opportunities. Why? Workplaces aren’t safe. And until we address the workplace practices that make it unsafe, and exacerbate anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts and suicides, the "It's ok to not be Ok" or "Break the Stigma" campaigns are lip service. I'm not a fan of lip service, but I am a fan of taking ACTION (Acknowledging & Assessing, Communicating to Connect, Building and Strengthening Trust, Implementing the Change through Operations and Normalizing through Accountability). A framework I’ve built throughout my 25-year tenure as an Organizational Health Leader. And although some argue removing unsafe workplace practices is hard, I disagree. It’s possible, and it’s simpler, and cheaper, than many think. It involves kindness, integrity and accountability. And it’s within each of us, and our workplaces. If you’re interested in me serving as your keynote speaker, leading a breakout session or workshop, my talk titles and tracks incorporate my framework, and speak to: 1. Mental Health at Work: It’s About We 2. The Power of Words: Building Better Minds Through Communication 3. Permission to Prioritize - Redefining Selfishness as Self-Care Let's make workplaces safe, fun and a place people want to be a part of. They truly can save a life. And I'm here for it.
