🧠 Master Your Mindset

Reframe the Goal: It's not an interrogation; it's a conversation. They have a problem (an open role), and you might be the solution. You're both there to see if it's a good fit. This takes the pressure off.

Power Pose: Before you log on or walk in, spend two minutes in a "power pose" (e.g., stand with your hands on your hips, like a superhero). It sounds silly, but studies show it can actually boost feelings of confidence.

Visualize Success: Close your eyes and imagine the interview going perfectly. Picture yourself answering questions clearly and connecting with the interviewer.

📚 Preparation is Your Armor

Know Your Stories: Prepare 3-5 key success stories using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). When you have proven examples ready, you won't get caught off guard.

Research Beyond the Homepage: Know the company's latest news, their competitors, and their company culture. Mentioning something specific shows you're genuinely interested and have done your homework.

Practice Out Loud: Recite your answers to common questions in front of a mirror or record yourself. Hearing yourself say the words makes them feel more natural and less rehearsed.

Sit Up Straight: Good posture projects confidence and helps you breathe more easily, which calms your nerves.

It’s not just about what you say, but how you show up online.

Here's your cheat sheet to nail your next video call and land the job:

🖥️ Tech & Setup Check (The Day Before)

Test your tech: Open Zoom, Teams, or whatever platform they're using. Check your camera and microphone. Nothing is more stressful than a last-minute tech fail.

Find your light: Face a window or a soft light source. Avoid sitting with your back to a window, which turns you into a silhouette.

Curate your background: Make sure it's clean and professional. A tidy room or a simple virtual background works best. Let your skills be the focus, not your laundry pile.

Camera at eye level: Stack some books under your laptop. Looking slightly up or straight at the camera feels more like a real conversation.

🎙️ During the Interview

Look at the camera, not the screen: This mimics eye contact and makes the interviewer feel connected to you. It's weird at first, but it makes a HUGE difference.

Be engaged: Nod, smile, and use hand gestures. Your body language still matters, even on video. It shows you're listening and interested.

Minimize distractions: Close all other tabs. Put your phone on silent and out of sight. Let your dog/roommate/family know you're in an important meeting.
✅ The Follow-Up

Send a thank-you email within 24 hours: Just like an in-person interview, this is non-negotiable. It shows professionalism and keeps you top-of-mind.

Mention something specific: "I really enjoyed learning about the team's approach to [specific project]" shows you were paying attention.

Reading "Inspire Greatness" by matt tenney right now, and one concept keeps smacking me in the face:

You can't inspire others if you're running on empty.

The whole "fill your cup first" thing that we all know intellectually but ignore practically.

I'm the worst at this.

I'll coach clients about boundaries while responding to emails at 8 pm.

I'll talk about sustainable leadership while skipping lunch.

I'll preach about the importance of rest while working through weekends.

The book asks: "What are you modeling for your team?"

And I had to sit with that.

Because Gen Z is watching how I work, not just what I say about work.

If I'm burnt out and calling it "dedication," what am I teaching them?

So here's my current challenge: Model what I want to see.

Rest visibly. Set boundaries publicly. Prioritize what matters.

It's harder than it sounds.

But probably more important than any strategy I could teach.

Sometimes you just need to admit you're not going to finish it.

Permission granted: You don't have to finish every book you start.

Life's too short to read books out of obligation.

Just finished "Good Awkward" by Henna Pryor, CSP, and I have never felt so SEEN.

The premise: Awkward moments aren't things to avoid—they're opportunities for connection and growth.

The part that hit me:

We spend so much energy trying to avoid being awkward that we miss opportunities to be authentic.

Example from my life:

I recently stumbled over my words in a presentation. Completely froze. Said "um" about 17 times.

Old me: Would have been mortified and replayed it for weeks.

New me (post-book): Laughed and said, "Well, that was awkward. Let me try that again."

The room relaxed. Someone said, "I do that all the time!"

Suddenly, we were humans together, not a perfect presenter and an audience.

Henna talks about this: Awkwardness is just honesty without polish.

And honestly? #GenZ taught me this even before the book did.
