As an organizational psychologist, I study human psychology as it is manifested in - and influenced by - organizational life (or, as I tell my relatives, "I study people at work"). My newest endeavor is serving as Founder of the Institute for Life at Work. Although still in its early stages, the Institute is on a mission to provide thought leadership on topics such as hybrid/remote work, team effectiveness, psychological safety, loneliness, inclusive cultures, employee engagement, and burnout. Ultimately, my goal is to generate a fresh set of data-driven perspectives and tools to help employees from all backgrounds thrive at work. In addition, I have the honor of serving as a Consulting Researcher at Microsoft Research Lab New England. It is a thrill for a researcher like me to access such multifaceted data sources and talented investigators. Microsoft's New Future of Work initiative is coming out with excellent research, including a recent major report and series of articles. At Boston University's Questrom School of Business, I have enjoyed my time teaching MBA classes on leadership, teamwork, negotiations, and other essential aspects of organizational life. I will be stepping away from teaching for the 2022-23 academic year to focus on my research, but the students will always be close to my heart. In addition to my research roles, I conduct speaking and advisory work through the Stern Strategy Group. These first-hand exposures it has been beneficial in keeping a pulse on what is happening in the corporate and non-profit worlds. Here is a sneak peek at some of the questions I am currently investigating with fantastic collaborators from around the world: • How has the social fabric of organizational life changed since the pandemic? • How do race and gender influence the experience of social support at work? • Does the personality of team members matter when it comes to speaking up? • What specific leadership behaviors increase psychological safety and feelings of belonging? • Can working from cafes, lobbies, and co-working sites be as socially fulfilling as working in an office? • What are the best practices for virtual relationship-building on globally dispersed teams? • Does having more knowledge about teammates increase job satisfaction and purpose? • What are the key indicators of an organization thriving? Watch my LinkedIn space and Institute for Life at Work website for the results of these and other studies!
