By 38, I was working for a SaaS company, crushing it, barely working 20 hours a week, and still hitting every target.

And I was completely dead inside.

Brooklyn Bowl, late 2018. I'm nursing a beer, watching a band I can't even remember, telling my buddy how unfulfilled I feel. 

That's when he said it:
"Have you ever thought about insurance?"
I laughed. Insurance? Really?
"I think you'd be really good at it," he said. "You have the personality. I've been doing this 20 years. I know who succeeds."

That conversation changed everything.

I went home to Amanda and told her I was thinking about leaving my cushy SaaS job to sell insurance on commission. Income would drop to almost nothing. We'd be starting from scratch.

Her response? "I think you'll be really good at this."
More supportive wife ever- literally- shes amazing

Did my due diligence. Called everyone I knew in insurance. Met my future boss through a friend of a friend. 

While everyone else at the licensing class was sent by their companies, I was there solo. Self-funded. The only one crazy enough to get licensed BEFORE having a job lined up.

February 2020, I started my new career.
Five weeks later, COVID hit.
"I'd love to look at your insurance," I'd say to restaurant owners, retailers, anyone who'd listen.
"I don't know if my business will ever open again," they'd reply. "Insurance is the last thing on my mind."

My income: zero. My confidence: shaken. My wife: still believing.

But here's what I discovered in those brutal early months - I was more alive grinding for nothing than I'd been coasting for years.

Every rejection taught me something. Every small win felt massive. I was learning, growing, struggling in ways I hadn't since my 20s.

Slowly, painfully, I built my book. A caterer here. A tech company there. Each client a small victory.

Five years later? I'm making more than I ever did in SaaS. But more importantly, I wake up energized. 

I know my clients' kids' names. I answer my phone at 9 PM. I'm building something real.

That comfortable SaaS job was slowly killing me. This uncomfortable insurance grind? It brought me back to life.

Sometimes the biggest risk is not taking one.

All of us dads, and really anyone who supports women, should be proud of Taylor Swift.

She was asked to play the Super Bowl halftime show. But the NFL didn’t want to pay her. They said the “exposure” would be enough.

Exposure? For Taylor Swift? More like exposure for the NFL and the broadcaster

The truth is, she’s the one contributing to the increase in revenue. 

So-  she walked away. No cash, no Taylor

That’s a powerful statement, and it's a big moment for women. 

It’s a big moment for all of us who want our daughters to grow up knowing their value and demanding it.

Taylor’s a role model not just because of the music, but because she showed the courage to say no when the terms weren’t right, time and time again

Our daughters should be proud of that. And we should be proud to back them when they do the same.

This is why I love Taylor Swift and love that my daughter looks up to her

What role models do you point to when you talk with your kids about knowing their worth?

Skill comes from reps. If you are not good, you just have not put in enough yet.
This was the conversation with my kids on the way to school this morning.

My daughter (6) is struggling with reading and thinks she is terrible at it.
My son (7) gets frustrated with the piano because after one run-through a song, he is not a master.

I reminded them that being a beginner does not mean you are locked into suckiness forever. It just means you are still building the skill.

Just remember Jordan did not make the Laney High School varsity team as a sophomore (10th grade), and he turned out to be the best player in the history of basketball. 

The difference between “bad at it” and “great at it” is often just practice.

Next time you feel discouraged, be like Mike.

What was something you are now a master of and once were just a beginner?

For me- it's pottery- I mean, I'm far from a master, but my early pots were lopsided messes.

Sales should be about trust, not manipulation.

When I sit down with a new client, my first goal isn’t to sell them a policy.

It’s to understand why they’re in the conversation in the first place.
Are they just looking for information?
🔥  Are they under pressure from an investor?
📃 Are they about to sign a contract?
💻  Do they have PII or a product about to hit the market?

Once I know the driver, then we can have a real conversation. I walk them through the different types of policies, what they do, and- and most importantly- when they’re actually needed.

And oftentimes, the conversation ends with:
“You probably don’t need this yet. Call me in six months when the trigger happens.”

Because that’s the truth, startups run lean. Every dollar matters. The last thing I’m going to do is recommend a policy that isn’t needed just to close a sale.

That’s not selling. That’s not building trust.

A trusted advisor educates, gives clarity, and helps you spend wisely. That’s how you build long-term relationships that matter.

Studies show the most likable people aren’t the most confident or charismatic, they simply like other people. They say hi, show interest, and others respond in kind.

A few years ago, a prospect called with one question:
“Can you beat my current quote by 10%?”

I told him I couldn’t answer that,  but I could review his coverage.

We found two big gaps in his cyber policy: no social engineering and no media liability.
We quoted it properly,  a little higher in price, but far more complete.

Months later, a claim hit after his team accidentally published defamatory info about a competitor. The media liability coverage we added paid the entire loss and defense

Without it, he would have been in a financial disaster

That’s why I’ll always lead with coverage and Service over price.

What was your first job and what year was it? I’ve had more jobs than I can count.

And honestly, I don’t remember a lot of the tasks I did in most of them.

What I do remember is that from my very first job, I built a work ethic that has stayed with me my whole life.

At 14, I had to get working papers signed by my parents to work at McDonald’s.

 Then came delivering pizzas, lifeguarding, and waiting tables.

I then graduated college and started teaching snowboarding in Utah, then started my career jobs in tech, and now Risk Management.

The point is this: it doesn’t matter what the job is.

What really matters is that we are constantly building soft skills-  discipline, communication, showing up on time, talking to people, building relationships, handling pressure, writing concise emails, and playing the political game.

Basically all the stuff that transfers to any job

And most importantly this is the type of shit we should be teaching our kids. 

Skills change. Industries change. Ai is taking up so many of the menial tasks But work ethic and soft skills will always matter.

No one is ever going to succeed in business if you don't know how to talk to someone- this is learned at an ealry age and nurtured throughout our lives

Why CFOs still get surprised by renewal quotes

Every CFO I meet says the same thing: they hate being blindsided at renewal.

Most surprises come down to five things:
Exposure changes - payroll or revenue went up, but the carrier never got updated.

Prorated adjustments - a mid-term change last year means you’re now paying a full 12 months at the higher rate.

Carrier appetite shift - the underwriter no longer wants your class, and the agent has to find a new market fast.

Inspection or valuation updates - coverage was quietly increased mid-term, but the cost didn’t show until now.

Market or credit adjustments - rate hikes, carrier minimums, or credit score movement caught you off guard.

And the biggest one:
The broker didn’t re-market early enough to avoid rush pricing.

None of these are bad luck. They’re process issues.
