I like to write long sentences followed by short ones. Not because AI told me to, but because my 4th grade English teacher told me to.

I use transition words in my copy not just so it’ll rank in AI overviews but because my 9th grade English teacher wrote “transition” in red ink on my final term paper 42 times.

I use em dashes sparingly because one of my major clients when I first started copywriting had a style guide that said to use them once every 500 words. I liked that, so it became a style habit.

I put things in title case when they need to be, and in sentence case when they need to be. I don’t deliberately capitalize improper nouns and I don’t start my sentences with lowercase letters to make it look “non-AI.”

You try to pinpoint the tells of AI copy and say, “look it’s the em dashes!” No, honey, it’s not the em dashes. It’s the utter lack of emotion and humanity.

But we can’t quantify that as easily can we? So we keep rounding up our rule of three’s, rhetorical two-word question sentences, and excessive gerunds and tell ourselves if we can just spot and eliminate these things then we can sound “human” again.

How about, instead, you look for ways to make your writing relatable? Try worrying about the idea or message behind it and ask yourself if it’s something other humans would really care about.

Try to sound like yourself. If that means you use grammar correctly, then do that. If it means you pepper your content with em dashes because you like how it looks, do that.

Nobody else has a voice like yours—because it’s yours. Don’t let the machines ruin it.
