As Country Director of OHI in Zambia, I didn’t just manage programs, I pioneered a new model of care and systems leadership grounded in emotional wellness, trauma recovery, and sustainable community development.

Key Contributions:

Healing System Architecture: Designed trauma-informed, culturally grounded wellness programs that prioritized long-term impact over quick fixes.

Therapeutic Practice: Delivered trauma-informed therapy and created safe spaces for emotional recovery and growth.

Team & Culture Development: Cultivated a purpose-driven team culture through mentorship, leadership training, and system redesign.


Key Results:

Empowered 26 youth with K5,000 seed grants + start-up kits for perfume businesses.

Founded The Safe Space Breakfast Hub, a national mental health platform that started with 10 participants. 

Sponsored youth like Ndekani Elis Sichela, Bernard Kanyika, and Sifuwe Happyson through education and healing-centered mentorship.

Transitioned OHI from basic aid to a systems-based model integrating mental health, entrepreneurship, and emotional resilience.


Leadership Philosophy:
True leadership is healing. It's not just about delivering impact it's about building systems that make people feel seen, safe, and supported. At OHI, I worked to transform not only what we did, but how we did it.

Though I no longer hold this role, the systems I designed and the legacy I built continue to inform my global work in healing-centered systems, trauma-informed consulting, and organizational transformation.

I design systems that heal, not just help.

I’m Coviness Mwengwe, a Mental Health Practitioner and Trauma-Informed Systems Architect based in Zambia, working across Africa and beyond.
Over the past few years, I’ve helped 3,000+ individuals and 40+ teams build trauma-sensitive, emotionally safe, and healing-centered ecosystems in their schools, communities, and institutions.

I don’t just run programs. I redesign how people live, work, and lead especially in environments where burnout, silence, and emotional suppression have been normalized.

At the heart of my work is the TRE™ Framework
a model I use to guide transformation from the inside out:

I’ve survived burnout. I’ve led while grieving.
I know what it means to look like you’re holding it together, while inside you’re quietly breaking.

That’s why I lead with empathy, structure, and strategy helping individuals and organizations build sustainable emotional wellness into everything they do.

A stage.
No lights. No applause.
Just presence.

A girl walks in.
No spotlight. Just survival.

She speaks.
Not with volume but with weight.
The kind of pain that doesn’t ask for pity, but listens for purpose.

Just this:
There was a night I didn’t think I’d survive.
And it wasn’t just one night.


I’ve slept in silence where my prayers were louder than my heartbeat.
In 2018, I was kidnapped.
Tricked with promises of work. Trapped for 7 days in a stranger’s house with no food, no water just locked doors and death threats on the other side of a phone.

Every night, God whispered, “Don’t sleep. If you sleep, you die.”
On the 7th day deliverance came.
A stranger bought my bus ticket home.
I lived. But not all of me made it back.

In 2020, when depression had swallowed the light, I was taken advantage of by a man who called himself a pastor.
I drank what I thought was hope. It left me powerless.
He ran.
I was left with more than bruises. I was left with questions that echoed in my chest louder than answers ever could.

Before that, I was beaten and belittled for daring to have a voice.
Made to wash the blood-soaked underwear of someone else’s child just to have shelter.
I was called insane.
I was told, “Even a dead person thinks better than you.”

I remember asking God if maybe I was adopted.
Because how can your birthright be bruises?

Then, just before my birthday in December 2020, I dreamt of my own death.
I saw Room 2 in the hospital.
I saw my parents crying over my body.
I begged them “I’m still here. I’m not gone.”
But they couldn't hear me.

The next day, that dream tried to come true.
My blood pressure read ERROR five times.
Room 2 became real.
But so did a miracle.
A colleague ran for medicine. A doctor recognized me.
An injection. A prayer.
And suddenly I was back.

Not the same.
But back.


That is my 𝗪𝗵𝘆.

Mental health is not a passion I picked.
It’s the scars I survived.

Every tear, every trauma, every silent scream has formed the way I see the world.
I see people the way I wanted to be seen.
I hold space because I know what it’s like to have none.
I advocate because I remember what it felt like to lose my voice and nearly my life.

I create safe spaces because I never had them.
I lead with empathy because judgment almost buried me.
I serve because surviving alone was never part of the plan.


What do I hope for?

That every heart finds its home.
That trauma is not normalized.
That healing becomes a birthright, not a privilege.

When it gets hard, I remember:
I’ve already seen the grave.
What I’m building now is not just a career it’s rescue work.
