Bad processes slow you down, frustrate you, expose you to unnecessary risk and generally make your life more difficult than it needs to be. Despite this, the sheer number of bad processes we encounter everyday is an endless source of amazement. Fixing bad processes doesn't have to be hard. Beyond the workshops and process maps it requires time, money, desire and commitment to make it right. In my experience, if any of those things aren't present then fixing things is going to be a battle. Before you start, the organisation has to wake up to the fact that processes are a strategic asset. The company doesn't function without them. At the same time, processes don't work without direction, people, and technology. In that order. Fixing processes means coordinating all those things across teams and departments. Everyone may have the desire to make things better, but without commitment your efforts are doomed to fail. You can't fix processes just by creating flowcharts, but it's the essential first step to understanding what you do need to make it happen.
