No miracles, no hype, no glory. Instrumentation is a world in itself, challenge and reward in one, and conducive to development of a valuable and largely transferable set of skills. Early in my career, an instrumentation veteran has told me that once in this field, one is in it for life. Whether the statement generally true or not, it proved true for me, though in a broader sense: I have since been in process measurement & control from plant maintenance to QC /metrology, to marketing, to sales/application/technical support. But my understanding of that statement has evolved over the years from looking at it only from the perspective of continuous challenges on the technical side that stimulate an endless need and thirst for learning and personal improvement, to adding the complexity of the human interaction as a major factor. Solution finding and decision making are processes that involve different people of different specializations. Communication, interdepartmental collaboration, team work are crucial for the success of any endeavour, and result in by far better solutions with a higher degree of acceptance and implementation.
