Currently providing care in an LDRP setting in a busy maternity care unit. My daily tasks include assessing triage patients who come into the unit for a variety of reasons (PIH/Pre-eclampsia work-ups, rule out labor, and various complications of pregnancy), caring for women in the labor and delivery process, administering magnesium sulfate, preparing women for induction of labor, administering pitocin, circulating in the OR for c-sections, performing the role of scrub nurse or first assist, and providing care in the post-op recovery period, participating on the birth response team to assess and, if need be, resuscitate the newborn, providing PPV/CPAP/ oxygen administration to newborns needing stabilization. Additionally, my current responsibilities include providing care to mothers and infants in the postpartum period, including assisting with breastfeeding (working in partnership with CLCs), assisting with ADL's, performing assessments, and medication administration. Also, staff nurses are expected to assist social workers in the matching of patients with any support that may be needed (psychologically or socially) before discharge. I frequently fill the role of charge nurse overseeing admissions, discharges, staffing, and scheduling procedures. This past year I have been participating in the Peer Review Committee, reviewing patient charts for compliance with IU Health standards, and advising colleagues as needed to meet compliance. My previous experience includes working in a level 1 newborn nursery, tending to newborns that needed oxygen administration, IV antibiotics, NG feeds, NAS scoring, and the like.
