Lots of model releases get hyped up - whether they be generative models or embedding models, but how often do you see the phrase: 

"The GPT4 of datasets took down Hugging Face..."

That's right—a new 15T token dataset hit Hugging Face, called 🍷 FineWeb, and it was met with a lot of engagement—so much so that it took their services down!

So why would a dataset do this? 

Well, first of all, it claims to be "15 trillion tokens of the finest data the 🌐 web has to offer," - let's break down what that means:

1) It's been cleaned and deduplicated, which are the extensive and resource-consuming pre-processing steps that involve filtering data, removing duplicates, and more.
2) It contains a *lot* of CommonCrawl dumps (2013-2024), ensuring a large volume of relevant data.

Okay, so it's a "clean" dataset and free of duplicates. What else is great about this release?

1) They released the code for the entire pipeline so you can "easily" reproduce their steps
2) It's released under the ODC-By 1.0 license, a fairly permissive license
3) They intend to continue to improve and iterate on the dataset - making it better and better

This is all sounding amazing, are there any cons?

Well, it's still English only, a downside that is becoming increasingly difficult to overlook—and despite being better, it's not a massive improvement over other available datasets.
