A peek into the past: The Story of Duodeka 📖

In the past few months, I have gained a lot of new followers on LinkedIn. Therefore, I think it’s nice to tell you something about the history of Duodeka.

I started Duodeka together with 5 other student-entrepreneurs from Tilburg University in 2017. We early on saw and believed in the power of multiplication through combining forces. That’s why we started the Duodeka (6 times 2 = 12) cooperative. The photo below is a nice throwback to 2017 😄.

We started as custom software development agency. After focussing on solving complex organizational challenges for large organizations and corporations by building custom software applications for them, we gradually began developing our own SaaS building infrastructure. This method aims to transform these solutions into great SaaS companies.

Because why should you only develop a custom application for one company, when it can solve a problem for an entire market?

Fast forward to 2020. After lots and lots of hard earned experience, we decided to pivot the company towards the venture building model. We still solve complex organizational challenges, but only when the solution has the potential to turn into a great SaaS company. Multiple at any given time, through our Duodeka infrastructure.

Building the solution for these wicked-problem can take years. Often beyond the capacity or willingness of the usual suspects. However, our structure empowers us to dedicate the time needed for these challenges. Driven by our strong belief in the importance of solving these challenges and the recognition that their resolution provides us with a distinct competitive advantage.

Recently, we celebrated our 7th anniversary. Out of the 6 founders, 4 are still with us, but we now have a great team alongside us.

Our venture building flywheel has been further optimized, and in addition to our active ventures, there is a lot coming up from the pipeline. So it's certain that our story will indeed have many new chapters ahead 🚀

5 Invaluable SaaS Lessons I Learned Along the Way 📖

Years of building and scaling SaaS comes with countless lessons. The following 5 immediately come to my mind when I reflect on the past years:

1. 𝐓𝐨 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭. You want to 'live their problems', so immerse yourself in this group through long conversations, surveys, and observation.

2. 𝐁𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐢𝐯𝐨𝐭. Your SaaS startup is often your baby, which makes it difficult to deviate from your original vision. However, you must be willing to pivot if necessary.

3. 𝐃𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬. Listen to the needs, gather feedback, and prioritize processing it. Crucial to keep your churn under control and to improve your solution.

4. 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐬. Ensure that your acquisition method and lead follow-up are optimized first. Scaling SaaS isn't magic; it's hard work and ensuring that you excel in the basics.

5. 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐩 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. Establish a clear definition of this, so you know what you want to measure.

5 SaaS Lessons

Inside Duodeka: Out-Of-The-Box Marketing 💡

In the year 2024, it's tempting to think purely 'online' in terms of SaaS marketing. It's scalable, often relatively inexpensive, and the world is at your feet.

For one of our ventures, our marketeers faced a challenging case. A very specific target audience needed to be reached, firstly to create brand awareness, and ideally, to generate the first leads as well.

After extensive brainstorming, no 'online' campaign emerged on paper that everyone was enthusiastic about. 

So why not try something completely different?

Our marketeers came up with an out-of-the-box campaign.

The decision was made to approach the target audience with handwritten cards, sent in an eye-catching golden envelope.

Due to the highly specific target audience, this was achievable. Additionally, it is a much more personal approach than any online strategy. Not only is the message personalized, but it is also handwritten.

Yes, it's more time-consuming than an online campaign, but you reach exactly the right people and ensure that you create a distinctive touchpoint with your brand.

A great example of how thinking outside the box can result in cool marketing campaigns.

Venture Update: 3 new faces strengthen the Mr. Winston team 💪

Duodeka venture Mr. Winston Horecasystemen has welcomed 3 new team members in the first months of 2024.

Firstly, Sales Manager Evan Joosen. After substantial growth in 2023, Mr. Winston is ready for the next acceleration. Evan brings over 20 years of experience in hospitality POS system sales, providing a wealth of expertise.

Additionally, behind the scenes, there is ongoing hard work on many big plans. To realize these plans, the development team has been strengthend with Joseph and Luka.
